Cool theory, but I think Luke faced his dark side trial towards the end of Jedi. During the time of the Republic, a padawan would have to face the Jedi trials which would test their suitability for Knighthood in the ranks of the Jedi. Wookiepedia (canon section) states that there were 9 steps of a trial, teamwork, isolation, fear, anger, betrayal, focus, instinct, forgiveness and protection.

It could be argued that Luke has faced each of these. Teamwork in helping escape the Death Star on the Falcon, and destroying said Death Star, he faced isolation and probably fear in the wampa cave in Empire. Anger he faced when he stood against Darth Vader in Empire, Betrayal, Focus, Instinct, forgiveness and protection he faced in Jedi, betrayal when he confronted Obi-Wan and Yoda about his father, the others he faced when he refused to kill his father, and refused the emperor's command. So it's safe to say that Luke was a fully fledged Jedi Knight.

The fact is Luke faced the Dark Side and resisted. Which is an essential part of becoming a Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan did it when he faced Darth Maul, Quinlan Vos did it when he was a double agent for the Republic during the Clone Wars (awesome story arc that one!) Whereas Anakin/Vader never faced the trials, which could explain how he fell to the Dark Side so easily.

I like the theory don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure that's what's going to happen. Luke is described in the Aftermath trilogy as having an untouchable soul, which could be interpreted as the Dark Side not able to get its claws in to Luke.

I think given the horror Luke probably witnessed during the destruction of his students, and sensing Han dying at the hands of Kylo Ren as well, I firmly believe he will have transcended the Dark Side and the light side of the Force, and found the balance within himself, which is what Snoke is so afraid of. In TFA, he's desperate to make sure that Luke doesn't come back on the scene.

I don't think Luke becomes Darth Vader, I think that's what Kylo Ren's trying to do, but is misguided. Perhaps Luke is doing what Anakin was meant to do, and that's to bring balance to the Force.

    Just my 2 cents worth....

I think that they will avoid playing on or changing details of the OT to meet their story telling goals in the ST. I think at this point, post-PT, they have learned that anything that messes with the OT will not go over well. They aren't just in it for the money with this trilogy, they are also out to make star wars.... great again?

So, when Luke had that vison on Dagobah in ESB, it wasn't some foreshadowing of his fall to the dark side and taking of Vader's place in a future trilogy, it was to show him how close they were to one another and the power the dark side has to change people, including himself if he wasn't careful. They wont try and mess with that meaning to serve their interests now, and they shouldn't.

Just like the saber lost on Bespin - It was back in VII, but was not explained. There were plenty of theories that there would be a "flash-back scene" - some even thought that it would show a new character on Bespin during the battle between Luke and Vader. I am glad that they stayed far away fro ideas like this, and hope they continue too. Getting too detailed in the explanation for how the saber was retrieved would distract from the story at hand now, and only serve to distract and disrupt both stories by giving people another, old situation to over-analyze and wonder about,. At first, I wanted to know everything I could about who got this saber and how. Now, to me anyway, it just seems better to leave it vague as they have done.

All Sith are destined to destroy their masters. That is the way of the darkside. Vader's true redemption lay, not in destroying Palpatine, but in saving Luke and preventing his fall to the dark side. Luke's love redeemed Anakin ("I've got to save you..." "You already have") Anakin's love saved Luke.

The idea of a dark Luke is not out of the question, but personally I think that has already been explored and resolved in Jedi.

See, if Kylo try to resurrect Vader, that would make sense to me since he is really interested in his gandfather. It is the only way I would accept the resurrection thing..;);)

But Anakin is already a force ghost at the end of Jedi. Yes that seems incongruous, but it is there in glorious technicolor canon so we have to accept it. He's resurrected already. What can Kylo do?

Thats the big question. Does he somehow learn from Snoke or Anakin's/Vader's forceghost what Palpatine told Anakin about resurrecting people ?? My whole point about my reply though, was to point out that it is the only thing i could accept in terms of it.. Maybe Ren wants Vader fighting at his side, and thats the reason if he tries to resurrect him ??? He then tries but fails.. Personally it would be great in my opinion, but only if he fails to resurrect him. i dont want to see Vader's return in the ST as an resurrected human/cyborg.. I only want to see Vader/Anakin in the ST as an forceghost..

I don't think the OP is saying that Luke will literally become Darth Vader, don his mask or resurrect his body, etc. I think the point is that Luke will turn to the darkside and become the new big bad guy, as powerful or more powerful than Vader. He's metaphorically the new Vader. There is a pretty massive difference. One is totally stupid and not believable (Luke literally resurrecting Vader's body) and the other is completely plausible and if done right could create some great moments (Luke getting mangled in a similar way and then embracing the dark side fully).

Personally, any theory that revolves around Luke turning to the dark side in 8 or 9 is something I'm interested in seeing come true. As mentioned above, if that's the big reveal in the ST, then whoa...that would be a legitimate twist. It's a bold direction for the story to go. I'd buy that Luke has fallen to the dark side if it's written and executed well. I think there's a good amount of solid explanation laid out in this thread, but the fact that it will no doubt anger a large portion of fans makes it a risk that I doubt Lucasfilm and Disney would take...But I'll keep hoping for a twist like this.

Well. Let me remix my hypothesis.

I know a lot of people would like to keep their memory of Luke Skywalker as good old blond Luke mint on his original card.

They tend to forget one thing:

Luke was an inch from turning to the darkside in ROTJ because of his love for his sister.
And from there, we have hints that Luke went to dark places (losing his padawans to his nephew, turning his back on his friend and family...etc.)

I say that Luke's story arc NOW and that was hinted by Yoda in ROTJ ("Pass on what you have learned"), is to become a successful Jedi Master and to pass on what he has learned to a new generation of Jedi.

We know that in between Episode 6 and 7, he failed. He is now a failed Jedi Master that hangs to the lightside of the Force.

Mirroring Obi Wan Kenobi who had the same story arc in the prequel trilogy.

Obi Wan fails as a Jedi Master while staying loyal to the Jedi Order as his pupil turns to the darkside of the Force.

What if Luke's arc has a twist?

Luke ultimately succeeds as a Jedi Master while turning to the darkside and putting his pupil (Rey) in a position to either turn or destroy him. Or maybe Ben is the one that embraces the lightside in order to save Luke or to fight him.

    Luke becomes Vader 2.0
Ben turns back to the light and join Rey to destroy Vader 2.0 and Snoke.
Luke's arc is then closed because what he had passed on to Rey & Ben has worked.

It would also be a cool twist to have Ben, who worshipped Vader in Episode 7 now is fighting its new incarnation in Episode 9.

In Luke, we had Obi-Wan's redemption as master as well as a redemption of the Skywalker name. Obviously, his very existence didn't right all the wrongs done by Anakin - but in driving his father away from the dark side and thereby ending Palpatine's life and the Empire's full grip over the galaxy, Luke became the consistently good Skywalker. He had his own brief struggle with the dark side and overcame it, which was the biggest difference between his father and himself: He was stronger when and where it counted most, in controlling his own feelings.

Taking all of this away to make him into a Vader 2.0 would completely cheapen his character and the films that defined his character, which is not something they will do. Having a constant cycle of Skywalkers-Gone-Bad would diminish all of the power of the stories we have right now. It also would not work with where we are at in the story. We basically were given an entire trilogy to flesh out - decently or poorly, depending on your opinion - Anakin's character and fall to the dark side. Somehow continuing the big chunks of story that VII set up, while also somehow showing our strongest and consistently good hero doing something completely out of character and going to the dark side, would be far too much for two more films - or even another trilogy - to do.

We already have the "Cycle of Corruption" arc everyone that wants a dark Luke really wants - Kylo, following in his grandfather''s foot steps, has gone off the deep end of dark and is a big villain in the galaxy.

    Agree.

We already have the character who embodies the Dark Luke and his name is Kylo Ren. Kylo Ren is what Luke Skywalker would have become if he had killed his own father. Where one succeeded against the temptation (and prodding of his mentors), the other has failed.

    That is an excellent point.
This strongly ties with another discussion we had on these board around the fact that this is Leia's trilogy...by extension her son. Not Rey, as I originally expected.
So, probably Luke's arc (redeem himself as a master) will be embodied in Kylo-Ben's redemption as a Jedi.

So, let's extrapolate on things we MIGHT learn in Episode 8.

    - Luke took under his wing Ben at very young age.
    - Ben was strong with the Force and was a promising Jedi. Luke and Ben were very close.
    - Something happens between Ben and his parents (maybe their separation or how it happened has a really bad impact on young Ben) OR Ben grows jealous of the other Padawans Luke takes under his wing (including a very young Rey ?!). Or a combination of all these elements... Leia & Han, busy rebuilding the Republic - Resistance - Splitting leaves Ben with only Luke as a parental figure. When Luke gets busy with a Jedi Academy, Ben feels abandoned and falls under Snoke's influence.
    - What Luke has learned to Ben at very young age will ultimately turn him back to the light. Something that Luke underestimates at the point we see him in Episode 8. It also ties to the fact that Jedi are taken at very young age to have strong roots and bounds with the Jedi ways. Something Anakin & Luke never had.

    Just spinning ideas.
