It seems that quite some music of R1 are missing on this CD. Looking forward to an expended soundtrack or something similar to the for your consideration CD that we had last year for TFA.

I'm assuming this is the same as the "For your consideration" thing from last year:

Just joined this forum, primarily to say that this soundtrack has grown on me in a crazy, almost unprecedented way. My favorite moments are Krennic's theme that opens the movie (He's Here For Us), the last few minutes of Confrontation on Eadu (at about 7:30, there's an underlying strings theme that sounds like the theme of the Walking Dead), and what is my favorite section of Star Wars music since Return of the Jedi came out, the 2-song masterpiece Your Father Would Be Proud>Hope.

TFA's soundtrack grew on me too, but in my opinion, it has nothing that comes close to that tour de force that I mentioned last. However, I think in the context of the movie, TFA's soundtrack was used better. I don't know if it's a sound editing or mixing thing, but like several other things about Rogue One, you get the feeling that maybe it was a little too rushed.

That aside, the highlights of RO to me are so much stronger than the highlights of TFA. My favorite TFA moments were Rey's theme, that moment when the lightsaber comes to her (not sure of the piece), and the Jedi Steps. Kylo's theme to me was overly simplistic, and pales in comparison to Krennic's theme.

While I am really, really curious what other composers can do, I hope we hear more Star Wars from Giacchino in the future, and I hope he gets more time to work on it.

Bought the soundtrack CD yesterday. Listened through them all and got general feeling of "meh" ness. CD is now sitting on the "special shelf" with the TFA one gathering dust,,,,

The more I listen to Rogue One the more I love it! I find myself constantly hitting replay for both Guardians of the Whills Suite and Your Father Would Be Proud.

It seems like every time I hear Your Father Would Be Proud it brings tears to my eyes. It's not only powerful music, but it evokes such a powerful scene.

Not by me you won't.... I didn't feel it meshed either. This could be a very strong reason many of us weren't satisfied with the effort.

In reading these threads, I've noticed that generally the people who REALLY liked it (the film) tend to like action. I'm more about character development and film score.

Take ANH. After Obi-Wan is killed we go immediately to a battle and takes the score into a thundering full symphony. Then, as the MF lifts off and spins out of the bay, an intense cadence as they slip away. Then a simple and very solemn oboe into the intensity preceeding the TIE fighter attack.

Up, down, up, down, up.... Intensity, excitement, sadness.... all from the score. I can't remember a single memorable or moving part of the RO score.

The film score is a character in a film, not just background music.

I mean, LISTEN to it!!! :)

What you have described with the music is actually exactly what happens numerous times in the R1 score. Especially in "Confrontation on Eadu," "Your Father Would Be Proud," "Hope" and the other tracks at the end. I think the mixing wasn't done as perfectly to make it fit in the film as well, but check out those tracks if you can.

Will do! I always check out a movie soundtrack, I just didn't remember anything while watching it.

Often I have to listen to it a few times before it catches me. I'll probably see RO again with my son since he wants to see it.

I just need to say that my mind was kind of blown by some of the connections to ANH that were brought up in this episode of the podcast. I'm one who came out of my first viewing of Rogue One not enjoying the music very much. My mind is beginning to change. Check it out.

I personally couldnt even remember the music 30 minutes after leaving the screening. Normally thats the point of a soundtrack but this is star wars and it wasnt up to par of what we normally expect in my opinion

Many had the same impression of TFA's soundtrack... including me. If anything, Rogue One was more memorable at first because of its ANH callbacks.

Personally, I don't see the role of the soundtrack as some sort of collection of catchy tunes. My issues were with melody and appropriateness to the scenes. A second viewing, and the analysis on this podcast, is causing me to reconsider some of my issues.

Comparing something you heard first to something you heard countless times is not really a comparison, that makes it heard for anything that is new.

We and our fan expectations are on a thin red line, to give nothing a chance and go on a straight route to use only the Williams score we have in the future.

I might need many more viewings because, as a kid seeing the ot, i walked out humming everything and being in the moment at all times as a 4 - ish year old. in regards to TFA, there were small moments but the overall classicness wasnt there like it was for the ot and the pt. i strongly believe the the sound makes the movie on top of the editing, acting and cinematogrpahy, which were all there for R1, but the track, not so much...but like you said i might need some more viewings but it may also be the context.

I think the score is kind of mediocre...sometimes it feels a bit rushed. Don´t get me wrong...there are really nice moments here and there but its not always on spot. Especially the death scene( its a really great scene, visually) of jyn and andor seems over the top and a bit cheesy(maybe an editing problem). i would have preferred a more subtle approach with a lot of scenes like williams did in TFA ( he saved more than one scene in this movie)

I know i´m picky here but i´m a composer myself ,had high expectations for this score and was a bit underwhelmed. Ps: Excuse my english.
