So, the latest news about upcoming projects on StarWars.com includes Rian Johnson's new trilogy and a live-action series coming to Disney's streaming service.

Not a word about the rumored Obi-Wan film. Does this mean the project is cancelled? Or was there no project at all to begin with?

I always had a gut feeling that the Obi-Wan film, no matter how amazing the idea, was always more popular among fans than within Lucasfilm.

It still could happen even if the first film in Rian's trilogy comes first. There will most likely be year gaps just like in the case of ST, which can be filled with standalones.

Let's not forget that the Obi-Wan rumour was apparently very premature. It has never been a confirmed project.

Don’t bury your hope just yet... they’re probably just waiting for Ewan to age enough to look natural in the role :D

I think he looks the part right now. And hey, don't want him to age too much either.

Calm down people. Patience. They have announced a new saga (to replace the current episodic saga in their future plans). They have not announced they are no longer making anthology films. I predict the pattern will remain the same: Saga, Anthology, Saga, Anthology, etc., etc.
If Kenobi is in their plans, it still is... regardless of the latest announcement.

I never said they would stop making Anthology films. Of course they won't. It's actually very similar to what I was foreseeing previously, with Star Wars being more than just Episodes and Anthologies. Obviously Rian Johnson's new trilogy won't be Episodes, but it also won't be Anthologies - it will be something else entirely.

I think we'll get these kind of "departments":

The Episodic Saga films - continuing the Skywalker legacy
The Anthology films - telling stand-alone stories whose stories contain only one film
The Chapter films - what Rian's new trilogy will be, three so called "Chapters" of something. Chapters could be more than just a trilogy.

Well, an Obi-Wan film was neither confirmed or denied officially. It was just media gossip and rumours.

Precisely my friend. So I will repeat, if Kenobi is in their plans, it still is. :) (point being we never really knew if it was or not)

    Yeah, I agree with this.

Regardless of whether or not the third spinoff is an Obi Wan movie, as far as we know there is still at least a third spinoff film- or, rather, we at least have no reason to think that has changed yet.
This is like thinking that Episode 7 would have been the only sequel episode when the spinoffs themselves were announced.

I think you' pretty much have the schedule laid out. I think they would call the Obi-wan film Kenobi: A Star Wars Story. Since he hasn't gone by the name Obi-wan in a long time.

    Why thank you!

And your Scout Trooper avatar is awesome as well. The Scout Troopers are very underrated, imo.

I never believed in an Obi Wan movie for the main reason is that we already know most of his life. And he can't be hiding protecting Luke while being the hero of something. The Empire would have find him.

The power of Star Wars lies not in telling prequel stories or stand-alone's but in serial narrative that is succesive. I'm not interested in an Obi Wan or Han Solo movie. The only way you make a prequel is by focusing on new characters, somewhat like Rogue One did. The only problem of course being that you'll never have enough time to establish these characters and provide satisfying resolution for their arcs. Rogue One for example. I think Lucasfilm understands that the standalone as a concept is highly problematic and doesn't seem to work that well for Star Wars even though Rogue One did quite well in the box office. Each standalone effort by Lucasfilm has been one of difficulty. They are reverting to succesive serial content, like a new Trilogy and TV-series for those exact same reasons.

The more you think about an Obi Wan movie the more you already know it will ultimately fail. Yes IT HAS OBI WAN, but Obi Wan cannot die and it would be unlogic for him to either leave the planet or engender 'attachement' to other beings. If he would do the former, his self-imposed 'heroic' exile in III and IV becomes a bust. If he does the latter, the entire confrontation with Anakin and Anakin's fall itself would become a bust. Star Wars should really ditch the idea of making prequels. I've never seen a prequel that worked, simply because you already know the resolution of the story.
