i preferred the original too. and even though he hated it, he made it work.

i think the change was partly to allow for a wide variety of movement/comfort, but also because he's actually transitioning away from the rigidity that the previous costume represented. he's lighter, less encumbered, and outside the psychological protection of the mask. some people want to say that's because he's more confident as Kylo Ren. i think it's because he's devolving back to Ben.

this new costume is much easier to "undo" than the previous one. lose the mask and cape, open the "jacket" (which is now one piece instead of two--more practical as a garment), and if he's got any other colored shirt under there, he'll no longer look like mr. Darkside.

despite the cape, he actually looked more like the feel of Vader in TFA.

Do you guys remember the TIE Silencer toy leak which had a Resistance logo on the bottom. Well, it was an mistake after all:

This one has a FO stand.

"He looks like he weighs 30 pounds soaking wet underneath that little black dress." :p

In my opinion his costume (in TLJ) is a much better fit for his character.

Do we know for sure he straight up hated the TFA outfit? It doesn't show at all, his fighting moves are amazing. It's actually my favourite lightsaber fighting style right now. If that was somehow conditioned by the costume, I say give him the damn skirt. :p

I bet Kylo will spend like 90% of his TLJ screen time without the helmet, so I believe the new costume was designed to fit him unmasked. His look at the end of TFA is great, but it does look like a stripped down version of a fuller costume. Ultimately it was probably the right call to go with this new design. I'm wondering whether or not he removes the cape for fighting, because there's no way that thing is practical in combat. ;)

he made several comments in interviews about how difficult it was to work with (both the mask and the costume). he couldn't see, he tripped all over the skirt, and apparently getting into the thing was not pleasant. if you've ever seen the deconstructed costume, it's a lot of strange layers. and it's probably heavy (the pants were lacquered denim--no idea how comfortable they were.

i agree that the cape makes no sense for combat.
the images from VF that show him tangled up in it is curious proof of that.

    I need this costume! Haha!

I just had an interesting thought about Kylo's smashed helmet:
What if Snoke destroys the mask to make Ren embracing his disgrace of losing to Rey by showing his scar to everyone. Snoke thinks this is the right way to go, but he is miscalculation Ren.

Yeah seems his idea has been there from the beginning, but we know it's not related to Anakin.

That could be it. I could see him saying something underhanded like 'Wear that scar with pride, let the first order know what you've done.' or something.

As for the cloak, if he does wear it in combat I assume it will quickly get cut off, which would make for a nice bit of lightsaber burning. seems like his old cloak was just burnt tatters. so I'd assume he'd be as careless with the new one.I actually really don't like the new cloaks material. I get its probably light so that it blows in the wind. but its so shiney, I don't think it suits him at all. Kylo Ren seemed really ragged and janky in TFA. I don't see the shiney cloak suiting him at all, seems like it would suit Hux better.

Lol. That would be an amazing part of the movie if Kylo finally finds Rey but does a fancy twirly-twirl before the fight and his cape tangles him up in a cocoon.

Then cut to credits. 'Directed by Rian Johnson.' :D

Rey sliced up his clothing easily. That cape looks like it would be harder to cut through, but ridiculous to maneuver in if they actually do fight in the rain on Ach-To. He's just trip, slip and fall off the cliff.

I'd love to see him take off the cloak and drop it the same way Obi Wan did in ROTS before the final fight.
but yeah I agree. its not practical. it only worked on Vader cos he never span or did any complex moves, he was like a robot using a baseball bat. Kylo Ren has too many flourishes to make a cape possible in combat.

His fighting style reminds me a lot of Luke's in ROTJ, and Luke quickly removed his robe before fighting, so I'd think Kylo would hopefully do the same thing. His cape is made of a leather material, so it must be heavy too.

I just noticed that Kylo's hair is wet in this image:
    t3_6tcm54.jpg

It's also wet in this teaser shot:

Rain or water scene with Ren confirmed. Haha!

this is the scene where Ren beats Rey in a saber fight on Ach-To, she falls into the water unconscious and a fella comes running in like Mitch Buchannon in super slo-mo and dives in and saves her. the fella.... Ben ;)

omg how bad would this film be if i was writing it? lol

    That's... horrible! Lol

Actually it seems Luke blowing up a hut and Ren crashing like an idiot on the island are the more or less actual scenes that happen involving him. The rest was weird rumors I can't fathom haha

no no.. if there's to a be sea rescue, then you go the other way and increase the cheeziness.

forget Ren... let's actually get the Hoff in to do it !

*disclaimer: Maximus was joking when he suggested the whole baywatch thing. Maximus does not, and has never watched any of the 242 episodes of it. Maximus was always too busy watching a real drama... sunset beach.
