    1. It sounds like TR-8R is the worst Stormtrooper in the Galaxy. That is not the case of course.

    2. A FS Fighter could easily killed TR-8R. Finn was in the Fightscene not FS, so he had to use the lightsaber.
But TR-8R had a Z6 baton, a perfect weapon for a fight vs a lightsaber.

But i still agree with you. One major problem of TFA were the double standards when we talk about how they treated both Leads.
They could rename TFA in Unlimted Power, and it would make still sense.

    1. Well in the context of the movie he is no different from any other trooper (and the bar is low in star wars when it comes to them) sure if you read the tie-ins it makes more sense but even then you still expect the hero to finally beat a guy he is been struggling to beat in melee for years prior.

    2. He had to use the light saber due to plot contrivance. Heck TR-8R chooses to fight in melee during a firefight for no good reason...again it makes more sense with the tie-ins but really JJ and LK couldnt spare a few minutes to develop Finn's relationship with TR-8R, Phasma, etc in the actual movie.

I mean sheesh cut the pirates and the rathars it be no great lose.

Your putting too much faith in JJ and LK that they cared about that. Have any of their interviews or commentary made you believe otherwise?

I'm putting faith in Ryan because I know he's read backlash comments in how Finn was presented in TFA.

I know a lot of people are upset Finn will be away from Rey and thus away from the main plot (just look at the Celebration poster).

But from the presentation given to him from TFA (no use crying over spilled milk) , to me it's absolutely necessary. Let him shine on his own (away from Rey please). Even if it's in a subplot. Or else he wouldn't be able to shine at all at this point.

From the rumors and leaks though, I do fear that instead of breaking new ground, Finn's plot will be retreads of TFA. In order to be used as juxtaposition on how he's more badass this time around.

TFA: spends time with Poe. Sheepishly admits he's doing this because he needs a pilot. Acts nervous.

TLJ: Wakes up from coma and spends time with Poe. Contemplates and fully accepts mission from Resistance.

TFA: meets up with Rey, who he continually jobs to. Has to earn BB-8 respect after electrocution.

TLJ: meets up with Rose, who he works more in tandem with. BB-8 follows his orders without question.

TFA: meets up with veteran scoundrel Han Solo, who essentially takes leading male spot away from him.

TLJ: breaks BDT character out of jail. Works with BDT for a specific point but doesn't curtail to him.

TFA: takes chance to leave the group to runaway to safety at Maz place.

TLJ: ???? Possible chance to leave, maybe with BDT. Doesn't take it. Sticks to mission.

TFA: fights and loses to TR-8R aka Nines.

    TLJ: defeats Executioner stormtrooper

TFA: infiltrates Starkiller with Han. Lies to good guys in order to get there.

TLJ: infiltrates Star Destroyer with Rose. Impressively deceives the evil guys.

TFA: helps Han with setting bombs but doesn't execute his plan to save Rey. She escaped already.

TLJ: successfully sets the bombs on star destroyer.

TFA: weak confrontation with Phasma. Fights Kylo Ren but gets murked.

TLJ: big confrontation with Phasma and beats her???

Eh I just cant get hyped for Phasma due to the poor setup and the fact that Kylo is the one who gave Finn a major injury.
That is what he needs to even the score on.

Dude, at this point I think your going to have to accept the fact that whatever happens to Kylo, it's going to be Rey specific.

I know it's not fair. But life ain't fair.

    really?

A guy programmed from birth breaks that programming and starts thinking and acting for himself.

lol he is like no other trooper.

so he is supposed to beat someone who has had the same training as him, is using the weapon he is trained to use.. and finn is supposed to beat him with a lightsaber that he's just been handed... a weapon that requires extensive training?

I still think that Finn WILL be strong in the force, but you are expecting a bit much too soon from someone who has just escaped the FO.

Well, to be honest they could give Finn an enemy that is more formidable or at least has not been treated as a joke in a previous film. I've said it before and I'll say it again but what about a Knight of Ren? Aren't there enough to go around?

Hell, at this point I'd settle for one of Snoke's pretorian guards (if they're not the same characters).

Instead, we'll have to settle for Finn defeating a shoehorned in "elite trooper" who just exists to be dispatched and character that people feel obligated to like because she's played by Brienne of Tarth. Come back to me when Phasma is an actual threat to someone like Kylo and then I'll pretend that she's important to the grand scheme of things.

Yeah nothing interesting about him going undercover with the 1st Order, running around the elite crime syndicate space Monte Carlo and having adventures of his own.

At the risk of sounding too blunt but did you actually read my post? Or is any particular criticism just blanket bombed with a stock reply?

Finn having an opponent that isn't the chrome action figure doesn't exclude him from doing the above things.

But this is exactly why Phasma is a good pick for an antagonist for Finn. She was not only his superordinate when he was in the military, but he also defected from her unit in the First Order, captured her, made her open the shield gate and threw her into a trash compactor. She was treated... poorly and that is a fantastic way to create conflict in TLJ by, you know, building up on the previous iteration and not throwing everything away with every new Episode, like the Prequels did in the villains' department. There's a reason why all major villains survived to Episode VIII.

Well to be fair, Rey didn't have lightsaber training either but that didn't stop her from kicking Kylo's butt. Just saying, the rules shouldn't only apply to Finn.

it honestly depends on your personal view of those fights.

I don't think we've seen anywhere near what Kylo/Ben is capable of.. not even close.

I think he was toying with Finn until he got careless and Finn tagged him.. then he beat Finn easily.
The Rey fight.. well we all have our opinions and Rey definitely started using the force and improved greatly mid-fight, but my opinion is that Kylo was never trying to beat her. He was confused about her... fascinated by her, and on top of that Snoke had ordered him to capture her.

I think Kylo was surprised by Finn's ability with the saber... to the point that he turned on the after burners and won the fight.

everyone sees these things differently, and i don't want to push my opinion on others.. just how i see it

I read it. When I hit "we'll have to settle" it seemed you were prepping for Finn to be a dissapointment in general. Finn doesn't need a nemesis to be exciting. I mean Han only ended up with Boba and look at the nonfrontation that turned into.

I don't deny that Phasma has a grudge with Finn, what I dispute is that Finn has any concern for her. I don't even need to rely on conjecture for this point. In TFA he treated her with comic dismissal, there was certainly no gravitas to their confrontation. I have no doubt a conflict can be built between the two characters but it will be built on a comic foundation with lower stakes then if you simply wiped the slate clean with a different opponent. I shall treat the oncoming Finn/Phasma dynamic with the same attention that it was given in TFA.

In regards to villain staying power in the OT, I could only say that Vader held that honour amongst them. The emperor only appearing in any length in one film and Boba Fett.....well I discuss him below.
Eeh, there wouldn't have been anything wrong with Darth Maul if they'd just continued to use him throughout the trilogy and developed him. Count Dooku wasn't too bad but my god they could have skipped Grievous, useless piece of scrap that he was. Even then I still prefer him as a villain to Phasma.
In fairness, I'm preparing to be disappointed with TLJ as a whole. Finn's story is just one facet that will form part of that disappointment. A lot of the things that I didn't want to happen or don't want to happen seem inevitable in episode VIII.

As for Finn not requiring a nemesis to be exciting that shall have to be left to each person's personal preference. I'm of the strong opinion that a hero is only as interesting as his opponent, a good villain can make a good heroic film a great one.

I'm glad you used Han and Boba as an example as it amply demonstrates the reasons I don't idealise the former (I find him funny don't get me wrong but he's never a character I wished to be: comically orientated) or obsess over the latter (like a large part of the fandom seems to do). I would never want Finn to be the Han character of the ST who spends most of his time joking about and defeating his enemy in a comic situation. Boba Fett basically did very little throughout the OT and it still puzzles me to this day why people are so attached to the character.
