You know I was so upset by that point and waiting for the movie to end that I pretty much failed to recognize that.

Yep. That sums it up perfectly. No point in the character going forward. Even if by some miracle they gave him a spectacular storyline in IX, it still won't be enough to overcome what was done with him in the two first movies. The damage is done.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 16, 2017 ---
Everyone indeed. His sole purpose is to make all the other characters look better by comparison.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 16, 2017 ---

And of course it had to be the WHITE stable boy. Thus future writers can keep going ahead and making the non-white leads lacking in force capabilities.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 16, 2017 ---

Hell, he's dead to me as of this minute.

I always felt in order for Rian to tell a certain kind of story he would have to make leaps in logic, and he did not disappoint. How long was it before Rey slashed Kylo on SKB? Then we have in less than a month a team up against Snoke's guards by two force users who had very little training and win? Lol

While I was supremely disappointed in TLJ, I was disappointed for pretty much every character. It wasn't something limited to just Finn. Now to what you said, while I was disappointed in his story in TLJ I wouldn't say he didn't develop, Rose's development was meant as away to develop Finn by association. Hearing her story and seeing what the resistance meant to her (and her sister) showed Finn a different side to the war and in the end encouraged him to stand up and fight (to the point of willing to commit suicide to stop the First Order). So in that respect I think they succeeded, the problem is (and this is for pretty much most of the characters and the entire movie) the story they chose was just poorly conceived.

But it is pretty much a repeat (and an inferior one I might add) of Finn's story with Rey in TFA. Why must a woman be a catalyst each time for any hint of Finn's growth anyway? Reverse the genders and people on twitter would be accusing the filmmakers of sexism.

Because Finn comes from nothing, he was a cog in the machine so he needs these external forces to have growth. TFA wasn't just Rey though, he had Han and Maz as well. Just like TLJ had Rose and DJ. I'm not trying to defend the decisions made in the movie but this particular is just something that isn't a problem in my eyes.
I'd still see it if I were you (I mean you are on a Star Wars message board I assume you are a big fan) but just go into with a glass half empty POV.

You know, it actually looks like Finn is being used to "even the score" with how women have allegedly been portrayed in comparison to men. The problem is, none of the women in Star Wars have ever been portrayed as inferior to the men as Finn is to any of the characters in the ST. None of them have ever been used as the comic-relief character. It's even worse considering that he's supposedly trained from birth to be competent. Like, I really don't see how people who can see how important it is for women to empowered and competent can't see the same thing for a black character.

This is a problem I find quite often in politics too. But, yeah, with SW fans we have been getting 2 and a half years of the importance of female empowerment with no grasp regarding that when it comes to having racial representation, competency in the characters matter just as much.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 16, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 16, 2017 ---
I disagree. It is a writer's decision to make a character be in the need of others in this manner, a writer's decision to make one character dependent on others for not just growth but motivation and an understanding of what is right and wrong, a writer's decision to make one character's spark the result of external factors rather than internal ones. Finn didn't have to be that way. What's worse is the writers keep him in that same loop; always needing others to show him the light as if he hadn't already learn these lessons before. That's a horrible way to write a leading character. We needed Finn to come to conclusions on his own and realize his selfishness on his own too. Instead we get other characters breaking it all down for him.

A time skip is the only thing that can help him now. Have him learn all this unnecessary humanity bs lessons off camera so he's finally on the same page as everyone else. And have him learn his new skills and strengths off camera as well before Episode IX.

It's obvious the writers suck at having him grow onscreen.

I find that in general when you go out of your way to try and appease (thats not the right word I just can't think of it) a singular specific group you often alienate all others. And this isn't just in regards to female representation but any "forced representation" in any direction with anything from race/gender/sexuality etc. More often then not the best instances of the empowerment (of whatever group) through characters is when they don't go out of their way and try to do it. When it happens naturally (like say Princess Leia or Uhura back in the day) it is much more impactful and a lot more well received than when its clearly attempting to do something just for the sake of trying to do that thing.

I think what manages to make this substantially worse than Han's characterization in Return of the Jedi is that he basically had his arc in Episode V. We haven't really had any moments in the story that give any insight into Finn as a character which is a pity because he has far more history with the antagonists and is in an innately more interesting role than Han's role in The Empire Strikes Back. One can even wonder what the point was for Rose to even be in this story. Why can't Finn have had his own subplot about reconciling his past? That would have been far better than what we actually got in the end.

Give Finn a unique story or something where he learns on his own or some a unique ship, anything. it's not hard, the writers just don't want a unique character, that's it.

He has learned in both movies. When everything gets tough. Stop running away. His story is just fine. He was with the FO he ran, ran into Rey, then tried running away again. He wakes up in TLJ trying to run away, then tries going kamikaze in which Rose showed him he's needed. So say what you want, but he helped drive the story in TFA and helped learn truly who he is and what he's fighting for in TLJ.

Finn goes from being a deserter (even though it was more about saving Rey) to being willing to give his life for the cause.

I didn't really enjoy the Canto Bight scenes though.

There's effectively no Resistance to speak of without a Time Jump.

I will say it again, there was no strengthening of the character Finn, as promised. No significance of the Biohexacrypt. No struggle with the LS wound as suggested. No significant development. The most that can be pointed to is that Finn has gone from TFA being willing to fight for someone (Rey) to being willing to fight for the Resistance. Way to stretch and grow the character.

We waited 2 years for that.

I guess that "Rebelscum" line was supposed to be a major pay off.

SMH. I hate this film more and more each day

I was too curious...i saw the movie, and boy oh boy IT SUCKED!!! Everything leading up from TFA into the TLJ was shot down, and given less value then it should have.
lol finn was deliberately written as if he forgot about everything his character went through in TFA, to me it seems Finn and Rose story is all over the place, it all happens so quickly without letting me catch up, Finn and Rose kiss was so forced, because I feel like they barely got to know each other, TLJ version of Finn is way out of character, his charisma is just not there, he never reflects on his lightsaber battle with kylo, rey and Finn not talking is illogical, but rey talks to Poe, kylo and rey were enemies now rey is all sympathetic towards him, kissing his ass, and disregarding his evil deeds, she raises her lightsaber to Luke in defense of kylo ren, so it’s pretty much Luke’s fault kylos evil in her opinion, Luke gets the same treatment as Finn with Rey’s staff, kylo and Rey’s sympathy towards each other is heavily forced and makes no sense, it’s a fan service. I hope this movie flops and rian Johnson’s career ends, I hope he ends up a bum in the street, this movie was utter bullshyt, and anyone who feels like this was good they are delusional, TFA character development/tension was brushed off just so kylo could be begged to come back...and when rey gave him that look before she left in the falcon, I’m thinking to myself wtf, this movie is a joke, rey doesn’t give a blast about Han or Finn she’s all over kylo for no reason at all, finn vs Phasma could’ve been a few more minutes, but RJ is anti let Finn shine so it’s 30 seconds, snoke was a JOKE, sigh random thoughts but there is much more in this film that sucked
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 16, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 16, 2017 ---
It felt nothing like Star Wars, this movie is going to flop, RJ made the film a lot worse by going out of his way to make sure Finns presence wasn’t known, if you see Finn from TFA and Finn in TLJ they have drastically different magnitudes to each other, I couldn’t connect with Finn in this movie, it’s not the Finn we saw from the last movie, it’s just off. I cand get over how forced Finnrose and kylorey relationships are, TFA implied this type of story wouldn’t make sense, but the list goes on and on, this movie is going down overall, and I’m very happy it will, I want RJ to pay for making such a ridiculous movie, mostly to please reylo fans because I guess that where the money is at, but they can’t make a movie dedicated to the reylo fans without destroying the plot from TFA, which he did with a cold heart

The ultimate purpose of Rose was for Finn to be paired off with a woman other than the white lady known as Rey. I'm cynical enough, especially after the almost zero interaction Finn and Rey got, to believe this.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 16, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 16, 2017 ---
You too? I just saw it yesterday and I get further p***ed off the more I think about how little Rian invested any ingenuity and originality into Finn's storyline.

It was ridiculous rey and Finn don’t speak, but rey talks to Poe, it makes no sense because in TFA Finn and Rey went through a lot together, and every bit of that is disregarded in this film, this movie has almost no connection to a lot in TFA

This is gonna to come across as "duh" observation to most, but it just occurred to me that we didn't get much of Finn in the trailers because there simply isn't much usable marketable footage of him in the actual film in the first place.
