Just checked out his first film "monsters." I've not seen Godzilla yet.

From what i saw from monsters, there's a good chance that if you throw a lot of money at him, you'll get a good action movie.

In monsters, his pacing was a bit slower than expected plot wise, but the ever changing and moving camera angles made it seem like more was happening. The slower part, by the way, is a good thing in my opinion. Too many directors try to move a movie at break neck speed. Edwards didn't. I liked that.

He also was able to get subtle but meaningful character moments from both protagonists and support actors.

Frankly, i was sceptical, but this raised my hopes exponentially. Now if only i could feel easier about Colin trevorrow...

Gareth Edwards explains the title of the movie:

    http://screenrant.com/star-wars-rogue-one-title-meaning/

No need to be pretentious, man. We expected the Jyn was the so-called Rogue One. As for the rest of the meanings, eh.

Good idea, maybe they could save that for a future spin-off.

I think that was the 3rd spin-off title.

No, it indeed was Red Five, Luke's callsign. Many people thought it'd be about Luke's piloting days in the Rebellion. The third one was always supposed to be a Bobba Fett movie.

Before any of the spin offs were officially confirmed by Lucasfilm, an early leak said the first would be Han Solo, followed by Boba Fett, and finally Red Five in 2016, 2018, and 2020 respectively.

Oh? I was under the impression that Red Five was the same movie as Rogue One, but they just moved the date as first and not third. Oh well.

I was skeptical at first too - for a different reason. When I 1st heard that Edwards would be directing this I was like "Oh crap - it's doomed". I REALLY don't get the love for Godzilla - at least not for Edwards part. Personally I thought it was well written, was visually very impressive, and had a strong plot. The score was a minor issue. But what killed it for me was the mediocre - at best - acting. Brian Cranston is one of those - though probably not at the same level - like Hanks and Oldman. From what I have seen, he is incapable of giving a bad performance. So obviously his (relatively small) part in Godzilla was great. The Olsen girl's performance could be called solid or respectable. But all the other performances we're very uninspired. And that is usually the fault of the director.

Now, I am slightly more optimistic, mostly after seeing and hearing his passion and motivation for this film. The trailer helped as well. I will check out Monsters sometime soon and maybe that will also help allay my concerns

Yeah, i think he got pretty solid performances out of his cast in monsters and I'd bet money that most of the reshoots were done to add heft to character moments, which is a good thing: it's a learning experience for the director and a better film for us. Plus, like you said, he's clearly very enthusiastic about SW.

oh, and WELCOME to the cantina!

I just hope we don't cut to away during a major action sequences to a view screen somewhere to watch the sequence play out ala his Godzilla movie. It seemed like much of the first 3/4 of the movie that seemed to happen. The trailers seemed to indicate this wouldn't happen but you never know.

the only thing that concerns me is the dialogue delivery we've seen the trailers. Way too sappy and over the top. It borders on soap opera level.

I think it's just how they decided to cut the trailers, but i hope the whole movie isn't like that.
