By this point I'm fine with Rey being a Skywalker, Solo, or random.

After hearing many peoples speculation on "what if Rey was a Skywalker", or "what if she's a Solo", and "what if she's random". I think that all options have the potential to make Rey a truly interesting character... on top of her already interesting character.

And in the end, isn't that what really matters?

Kira was originally rey's name according to the art of TFA. I know that rey is not her real name but it's possible that Kira might be if the writers have kept the concept idea for the reveal.

I hope rey and kylo don't turn out to be related...we already had that in the ot where leia and Luke are in fact siblings. Been there done that. ..now cousins maybe but I dunno. I dunno but I will keep my mind open to any possibilities. Just because she is who she is doesn't necessarily mean that she could be related to anyone who we know from the ot...otherwise it would feel like the galaxy is not that big when the possibilities are endless...

Interesting discussion. I thought it was a closed matter on Rey being a Solo, and that if any speculation was warranted, it was around Rey and Luke or Rey and another figure. Anything's possible and they certainly could shoe-horn Rey into Leia's womb retroactively but I think it would be too much of a stretch without more definitive bread crumbs. Like if Leia looked at Rey as though she were feeling something, or if somewhere in the dialogue in TFA Han and Leia talk about children "plural" then I think there's more of a plausible pathway to still having a Rey Solo. Otherwise, every other option looks more viable IMO.

I thought that she might very well be Han and Leia's kid before seeing the film. Now, I don't. I won't rule it out 100% yet, but it seems highly unlikely to me right now, given what we saw in TFA.

There were zero crumbs that Luke was Vader's son and Leia was his sister in Star Wars (1977). In fact, the character (Obi-Wan Kenobi) outright tells you that Luke's father is dead after telling Luke that his Uncle was a liar for telling him that his father was a spice freighter navigator.

Abrams said that they wanted to redo what the OT did.

For the Rey-Kylo Ren-Han-Leia family scenario, Rey is now Luke (Episode IV)--though it works for Leia as well. Rey spent time in the movie with her yet-to-be-revealed father, her yet-to-be-revealed brother, and a little time with her yet-to-be-revealed mother.

Except that the reason why there were no clues in the original film to Vader's true identity is, well because it wasn't that at the time. Him being Luke's father wasn't thought up until later on, hence the seeming inconsistencies with his character from ANH to the other two films.

They'd be foolish to do that here, where it seems like everything is much more planned out (at least in the broad strokes).

Ok, to be fair ANH (1977) was the first installment of the series. There was no reason to speculate about Luke's parentage as there is case to do now for Rey. There is a foundation and history upon which we can all draw to speculate on many things based on what's already happened; we know something about the universe we occupy by the time TFA rolls around which was not the case during ANH. If TFA was the first installment, there'd be no reason to speculate about (nor motivation to tease the audience with respect to) Rey's lineage.

That all said, TPTB can write anything at this point, even elements that might appear to contradict previous canon movies; it's just that the "slight of hand" becomes much more difficult to pull off.

And more annoying/frustrating for the audience if you cannot pull it off well.

I understand (and agree to an extent) the reasoning behind Rey not being her birth name, but I don't understand (from a story perspective) why they'd keep it secret if it was something as... inconspicuous as Kira.
If her name turned out to be something like Padme, or Satine, or some other character we know from Star Wars, I could see it, but there's nobody of importance named Kira.

I reckon it's because she doesn't know her name, she calls herself Ray. Someone, somewhere down the line will tell her who she really is. Kira Skywalker :)

A stand in name is just part of the story we will find out more of, if she was abandoned/hidden at birth or very young

Whatever her real name is I just hope she continues to go by Rey. I've grown attached to it already.

To me what matters is how they'll explain her origins and what lengths they will take to execute it in a way that is satisfying on screen. As long as it is interesting and compelling enough to have me still care about Rey , whether it is meant to change my view of her in TFA to that of VIII and beyond or not, it will depend on the writing and how believable they make it in order for it to have a strong unique keen sense of everything as certain events unfold throughout the film(s).

Still, in the end we got the father/son scenario with the big reveal and they want to do something similar in the ST.

I can understand why so many have discarded Rey Solo completely, but the fact that Leia and Han didn't mention her hardly seems like undeniable evidence to me. They had what, 10 minutes of screentime together? Our murderous son is trying to chase down and kill his uncle, but sure, let's randomly bring up our long lost daughter who we think is dead for over 15 years...

Basically. The way I see it they're either just not planning for a twist reveal at any point for Rey and Luke is her father, or they've deliberately emotionally manipulated people towards that idea in order to actually set up a twist so that people are actually surprised when she turns out to be Han and Leia's (since it was well known that's what most people were expecting pre-TFA).

A lot of people overlook that the Vader twist was made possible by a lie in the first place.

Yeah it's a really slick name but there needs a way to add to her story ... unless it's "Rey SKYWALKER. ."

To be honest, I don't even think Rey Solo would be THAT much of a twist.

Protagonist and antagonist being siblings is a SW-esque enough turn of events and it's not like zero seeds have been planted. I watched TFA as a fairly recent, semi-casual fan. I had tickets for December 26st, so I marathoned the films starting from December 21st. I had no idea that Rey's origins were supposed to be mystery, so I wasn't actively looking for clues. Still, Rey's immediate connection to Han and the hug from Leia both stood out to me (I thought "damn, that's a long hug for two strangers").

None of the Rey Skywalker clues rang any bells. I interpreted the parallels as a Star Wars thing rather than a family thing (all three protagonists grew up in the desert and all three are Force sensitive). When I think of a pilot in the SW universe, I think of Han Solo, because of the Millenium Falcon.
