i also think this would be a neat idea. it ties in with the rumor that the Empire and the New Republic have become one entity, and could also make for some interesting allegiances with our new, younger heroes. it would also be a lot like The Dark Knight in that Luke's doing good but being cast as evil. Jedi and Sith would be equally scary terms because, like you said, they might grab for power again, plunging the galaxy into another war. good stuff!

If I'm a young Jedi in E7 - I may be VERY drawn to the idea of the stability and "clean"-ness of the Empire. After 30 years - the idea that they're the "bad guy" may be very long gone. I can see an Empire apologist - "Oh that's just when Palpatine was in charge! They're not like that anymore!"

Now, I have mentioned that there could be differing factions, and they might be at odds with each other, and at times their interests could side with the new Alliance... but I had not considered the idea of someone trying to reform the Empire into something good...

    Hmmm.... +5

Yes just putting it in context of history. Look at the cult of Mao that has arisen in China. He killed tens of millions of people directly and through misguided policies - and there are now lots of Chinese who are thinking about that as the "good old days". Same with Stalin.

Memory is short. I'm sure in the E7 era there are those who consider Vader a god-like icon.

Hell, there might even be a Cult of Piett at this stage!

    Luke is not the villain.
Disney didnt pay 4 billion for star wars just to destroy it

Mod (tomvoxx): Merged your thread into another one regarding Luke as a villain.

I've posted this elsewhere before, "I think JJ knows what true fans would like to see, otherwise he would draw their criticism and lose their love for the sequels, a lot like some don't like the prequels. He can't gamble on a new generation to have the same love for Star Wars as we do. I think he has to cater to the OT fans, or risk losing them". They have a lot riding on this, and Luke at one time, I believe in the early 90's was voted in a poll as "The Greatest Hero of our Generation", or something of that nature.

Over at makingstarwars they are saying some villain concept has a very samurai feel to it and they are hinting that this may be Luke's bad guy wardrobe. I personally do not believe a word of it but that is just me.

I think it may be a vision or clone still if it really is Mark Hamill under that costume.

    EDIT:
Is this the helmet we're looking for?
    darth-bane-clone-wars-613.jpg
(Darth Bane, The Clone Wars season 6. It I'd indeed Mark Hamill as the character is voiced by him.)

Pargon!? What does that even mean? Are you really going to make common folk (such as myself) open up a separate window to Google your fancy grammar? May the force and a smidgen of humility be with you

No idea what a "Pargon" is, but even with my simple education, I know what a paragon is...

TPTB can either use standard English, or they can dumb things down... personally, I think they should expect people to adhere to a basic level of understanding.

And for the record, I would expect anyone who can use, "smidgen of humility" properly in a sentence to be able to understand what a paragon is... just sayin...

Ummm . . . I was very close to childishly calling you a "Paragon" in response to your attempted dig, but after having Googled the definition, I have arrived at the conclusion that the only two entities in this conversation worthy of such a title are myself and myself. Step off

Awww. . . do you want me to call you a Pargon to? I should imagine any average person would find your desire for acceptance sweet/touching. However, I haven't "a smidgen" room in my tiny chest to worry about average peoples insecurities.

There's something unsatisfying about a character like Luke Skywalker having such a complicated stretch of time (30 years) where we have to catch up on in Episode 7 without seeing it. Even if they use some of these 'scoops' or bits of EU backstory about Luke's downfall, I think the flashbacks are going to be helpful, at least for my enjoyment of the story.

You can't turn Luke evil after his defiance to the dark side at the end of ROTJ. You just can't. End of rumor. Luke is perceived to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Jedi ever. Yoda, Obi-wan, and Mace Windu went through many trials and never turned to the dark side.
