I've been thinking about the footage of the X-wings skimming water seen in the teasers, and in particular about Poe's "yee-haw!" in the cockpit. And I'm wondering where in the movie this sequence comes?

Until now, I've gone along with (what seems to be) the general consensus that this run leads into the destruction of SKB. But that sequence is also supposed to feature the use of a weapon that knocks out ships on both side of the battle, in which case Poe's elation seems a little out of place -- regardless of how successful his mission was. (The only possible scenario in which this could be got around is if Poe doesn't know his Resistance buddies in the air have perished, and that seems unlikely.)

Also, on the evidence of the teasers it's not entirely clear if Poe is in the black X-wing or not and I'd expect him to be for the climactic battle -- although I'm not sure why.

So, when else could this sequence take place? Well, when else -- and where?

The scenery for those shots doesn't look a million miles away from the terrain we've seen around where we believe Maz's castle to be. We've heard Maz's castle is destroyed and (again) we've assumed its destroyed either by the SKB (leading to speculation on the base's capacity to fire "through hyperspace") or by orbiting SDs or Tie-bombers. But what if Poe's squadron is following that body of water inland to strike against Maz itself? Is it possible the look of disbelief on Rey's face in teaser #3 comes at seeing Resistance fighters heading to the place she knows her "friends" are ensconced? Is there any possible scenario in which Poe could be striking against Maz while Finn, Han and everyone but Rey are with her? How could that come about? Communication error? Bad timing? Snoke meddling?

Or is Poe's run some completely innocent training exercise or return to base from some other, lesser mission?

What do you guys think? I just find that "yee-haw!" off for the finale, and think it could play for tragedy if Poe has just bombed the hell out of Maz's place while our heroes are in there....

Because it does not seem to be Jakku or Starkiller Base, it is likely that the scene takes place on Takodana. The Resistance is chasing the First Order around the Galaxy. Once the Resistance know where the First Order is, the Resistance launches a counter attack. It is possible that, after the First Order has attacked Maz's castle, the Resistance comes to rescue them.

Also see this Lego set, which has First Order stormtroopers and Resistance fighters and seems to take place on Takodana: http://www.lego.com/en-us/starwars/products/episode-vii/75103-first-order-transporter

I think it's definitely from Takodana (or there's a sequence on Naboo we know zero about).

Remember that Poe would be freshly escaped from the clutches of the First Order (notice the cuts on his face), so the "Yeehaw" thing is probably just him being a little overexcited about kicking First Order butt.

Personally, I'm not actually certain that the Resistance are aware of Starkiller Base until Finn gives them intel on it. They may have heard rumours about it, but they are unable to do anything about it.

I'm pretty sure this is on Takodana:

But I'm not so sure about this:

An educated guess would point them both to being the forest planet due to the lack of Poe's black X-wing, on the other hand, the exterior shots might just be other people's X-Wing because they didn't want to show the black one in the trailer!

It's impressive how well Disney/Lucasfilm has done at keeping so many plot points under wraps.

I don't know if its a common sense but my friend made a good point that they are flying so low because they dont want to be noticed by First Orders sensors
