It's one thing about the prequels people can't criticize and that's the design aspect. Everything in the PT looked great, and before people jump on me I'm not referring to the CGI, I am referring to the actual design of things. The fact they were computer generated is irrelevant.

What kind of twisted logic is this? On the contrary Kylo is almost too old to be their child, all the others are perfectly plausible.

Well maybe it's just me, but when KK describes the story as a whole as: "The saga films focus on the Skywalker family", that tells me that this story continues the Skywalker lineage....unless the ST isn't part of the saga.

I 100% agree, the prequels ALL had fantastic design which felt canonical to the Star Wars universe. I think the planets added a lot depth to the saga.

Er, Adam Driver was born in 1983 which is when ROTJ came out, so it would be perfectly plausible for him to be Han and Leia's son.

For the record, I really want Rey to be their daughter or Luke's daughter, but based on everything we have seen and heard, I don't think that's the angle that JJ and Kathleen are going for. I think they're interpreting 'generations' as a spiritual, rather than genetic, thing. That has merit and I'm not against it.

As a droid with instantaneous access to the entire digital vault of recorded human history, I can tell you that IT'S REALLY WEIRD for GL, after having been coy and mostly silent for months, to come out less than a month before the release with MULTIPLE INTERVIEWS in which he EXPLICITLY DOES NOT GIVE HIS BLESSING to TFA but in fact compares his feelings about the new movie to an ex-spouse, i.e. the feelings he had when his wife Marcia left him. This is ESPECIALLY WEIRD because Marcia left him after ROTJ because he was spending too much time making SW movies.

To recap, Marcia left GL because of his affair with SW, then SW left GL because of his affair with $4 billion.

This is all to say I can't wait to read Rinzler's "Making of The Force Awakens" so we can get the inside scoop on what went down between GL, Kennedy, Arendt, JJ and Kasdan during the concepting stage.

Luke and Leia are part of the Skywalker family. Kylo might be too.

My point is that the three main heroes don't necessarily have to be Skywalkers for this to continue the story of the Skywalker family.

Ok so (bear with me here) how do them NOT being Skywalkers continue the story of the Skywalker family?
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 23, 2015, Original Post Date: Nov 23, 2015 ---
I understand where you're at there...really, but I think as they're reporting as continuing the story "for the fans", I'm of the opinion that this'll be less likely (IMHO) a spiritual Skywalker tale as a genetic one.

I say this, as the fan following since ROTJ read the EU, and then my kids saw the PT and connected it to the OT. Those stories are about the Skywalker lineage and I think a departure from that will likely alienate the fans as it then becomes random stories about "stuff" rather than the Skywalker Jedi story. At that point, it turns into a Saturday morning cartoon instead of a linear story...just entirely too random, about unfamiliar places and relationships.

Um, if Rey is trained by Luke and mentored by Leia, she is carrying on their legacy. You don't have to be related to someone to be influenced by them.
'How the next generation was impacted by the story of the Skywalkers' is still the story of the Skywalker family.

Yes of course, that's why I said "almost" too old. What I don't understand is your claim about the others not being old enough, it doesn't make any sense.

By the way Oscar Isaac is older than Adam.

And Poe is definitely not Leia's son, so I don't know why that matters?

Anyway, my point is that given Hamill's statement and the fact that they've been so cagey about all of this, I would advise preparing yourself for a slightly different interpretation of what 'generation' means. Again, as much as I wanted Rey to be Jaina 2.0, I have seen nothing that convinces me she could be the daughter of Leia/Han or Luke. They rejected Lucas's pitch and you would think, given the natural assumption that the protagonist is a Skywalker, that they'd just market Rey as Luke or Leia's kid. But they aren't doing that. If anything, she seems like someone who is a Force-sensitive, new 'New Hope' that could continue what Luke started.
You don't have to be someone's kid to be their successor.

For the record: I really don't care if I'm wrong as long as it's a good movie. But if I had to bet, I'd put my money on Kylo being Leia's son turned evil, and Rey being a complete random. Lucas himself said they wanted to make this movie "for the fans" and considering he said that after noting that they rejected his pitch, my guess is that that statement is quite literal: the new heroes are, essentially, fans. They are inspired by the stories/legacy/teachings of Luke and Leia.

...and? Shattered Empire confirmed that Poe isn't a Skywalker, and by now it's fairly obvious that neither are the other two. (Not that Finn was ever seriously considered as one.)

Seriously... I don't even know what you are talking about anymore.

    You said the following:

My initial question is why do you think Kylo is the only one old enough.

I think George Lucas building his "Xanadu" (i.e. Skywalker Ranch) had also something to do with this concerning Marcia...

You really expect that we learn about the details that soon? I think one of the major reasons Rinzler's "Making of" books were so candid is the fact that they were written 30 years after the fact, so the people involved felt more relaxed about what transpired 30 years earlier.

I still think it's compliant with Mr. Lucas character what we hear now. He hated that people thought he was responsible for Battlestar Galactica 1978 (irony is he shares some blame. After the success of Star Wars many people were left unemployed and merely followed Dykstra's call when he told them that Universal was up to something requiring their skills and talents) and made sure to let everybody know (the Fox vs. Universal plagiarism lawsuit).

Now, he merely wants to make certain that audiences understand that whatever the outcome of TFA will be, Lucas has nothing to do with it.

The one thing that made me chuckle is that in this latest interview preview, he feels that Disney wants to make a film for the "fans" while he apparently would have made a film with emphasis on the story. How good he is telling a story is something we've seen in the PT and the latest Indiana Jones movie, isn't it?

P.S. I guess that last sentence just got me my first "Trolling". Well, there's a first time for everything, right?

I would agree with you except for one thing. Read the quote again:
“But the spirit of what he wrote, both in those pages and prior, is everything that this movie is built upon.”

If Lucas' work is "everything" that this movie is built on, then that means JJ and Kasdan built upon none of their own ideas. People are led to think they just tweaked the ages.

At Reddit, the top rated comment in the thread about this quote was that this proves they used Lucas' story and didn't just make up their own story. So even if he didn't mean it that way, saying "everything" is misleading. More likely, this movie is built directly upon Kasdan and Abrams' story ideas, within the Star Wars universe, which is just the setting.

By saying "everything", JJ is saying that this movie is not at all built in the spirit of a JJ Abrams movie, or not at all in the spirit of Kasdan's rejected Return of the Jedi ideas, which is false.

If JJ Abrams had just said "we made up our own story in the Star Wars universe that also takes place after Return of the Jedi," that would be more consistent with all the other accounts he and Lucas had given. The fact that it uses the OT characters, or the fact that it takes place 30 years later in the same galaxy, shows no similarity whatsoever in terms of story.

Consider this little bit of doublespeak:
“I don’t know why it [Lucas' name] isn’t on the poster, but it’s a valid point. I’m sure that that will be a credit in the film,” the director says.

He should know better than anyone why that is. It's because Lucas had so little to do with what ended up being written that giving him a credit would be inaccurate.

I'm not saying Abrams is being intentionally deceitful, but like Kathleen Kennedy when she said they developed Lucas' story "like any other," he is making incredible overstatements. And by doing so, they make it look like they never intended to tell us that they rejected Lucas' story. They wanted us to believe that Lucas had more to do with this.

If team Disney is at all worried about any of Lucas' statements, they should stop mincing words and just say "this is not a Lucas story."

Probably because most people were voting that it was still Lucas' story at first.
