I forgot about Jar Jar as soon as the movie was finished.

I can forget about him in Attack of the Clones, but I'm afraid his presence in The Phantom Menace is too pervasive. Being a bumbling idiot during what could have been a really cool battle was a bit too much for me. :D

Yes, voting in emergency powers that ushers in the beginning of the Empire in all-but name is so easily overlooked isn't it?

I can appreciate there are those who don't find his antics funny. I imagine they'd also sit stoney-faced through the classic slapstick movies of Buster Keaton (on whom such antics were based), Laurel and Hardy and Harold Lloyd.

For someone who comments disparagingly on the seriousness of people, you seem awfully serious yourself, considering that you seem to make a comment like this every time you disagree with someone's opinion.

To be fair, though, the internet isn't always a strong medium for conveying emotions.

It's news to me that I "comment disparagingly" on other peoples' seriousness but I tend to move on after I've said something so you have me at a disadvantage, I'm afraid. I don't suppose you have an example or two up your sleeve, do you? And if I appear "awfully serious" then, again, I wasn't aware I was coming across that way (in my defence, you've quoted something I've said that includes a smiley face which pretty much undermines what you're saying). I can only imagine - unless, again, you can support this with something I've said - that this would be a strong example of what you say about internet forums and it being such a poor indicator of a poster's emotions (which, if you believe that to be true, why go to the trouble of making these comments in the first place?).

Hard to miss, though. Isn't he in something like 70% of the film? That's an awful lot of afterthought.

I've seen horrible things written about Jake Lloyd.

People are hating on ... a 10 years old kid because he looked like a 10 years old kid and acted like Lucas wanted him to act.

    Speechless.

I think this was the point at which a line was drawn between those fans who love the films and are also fully realised human beings and those half-formed individuals who have found a home on social media and internet forums where they feel such anonymity gives them license to be as loathsome and hateful as they please.

I applaud Mark Hammill and his recent comments on this.

Surely a boring day would be the time when you would want to watch a film that you love?

That's the key for me, I can excuse his sodding about for the rest of the movie had GL not decided to interject a critical battle with his antics which really did spoil it. Had they toned the battle antics down, I would have no problem really.

That said, I don't mind Jar Jar really, just those battle scenes...

Yep agreed, grown men hating on a kid is a new level of vile. For an all-encompassing set of movies, lots of 'grown ups' feel a little too
    entitled

Let's all enjoy SW for what it is - nerfin' AWESOME!!!

I'm afraid these are hard-blinded by common imaginary.
I remember a chapter (or a film) about the Addams Family... d'you know the Addams Family ? In the story I'm talking about, Wednesday and Pugsley Addams (the two children) go to a summer camp (as they are evil, obviously, things will go wrong).... The cliches are perfect: all the little girls (except Wednesday Addams) are blond-haired, with a fossette, blue eyes, and a great smile... As a true Addams, Wednesday is the only black-haired girl and she never smiles:

What I think, is that in the common imaginary, a blond-haired child is nothing but equal to sun and goodness - while black-haired inevitably evokes darkness and cruelty (precisely what is Wednesday Addams :) and so is his brother Pugsley).

What I think, is that a lot of haterz were imagining Vader as a black-haired and non-smiling child, kind of a boy version of Wednesday Addams. When Jake appeared on screen, I think some couldn't agree that such a blond child, with a round and laughing face and blue eyes and lovable freckles on the nose, could seriously become the most villain ever...

In the first draft young Anakin was supposed to be eerily smart, a young version of Buddha. He didn't have to neccesarily be dark but he should have been special in more ways than his midichlorians count. In Gospel 12-year-old Jesus was already an exceptionally intelligent child - he was able to constructively argue with priests from the Temple of Jerusalem. I would have liked Anakin to be basically more like Jesus.

I agree, I simply stated that some persons (not included me) expected Anakin to be darker than Lloyd's face.
For my part I still think it could have been a good idea to start with a lovable boy and slowly make him the embodiment of Evil - even if I personnaly find discutable the way this had been written.

Agreed too. Far far beyond Jar Jar, this is what I regret. In TPM, Anakin is introduced to us to be strong in the Force, but really, I did'nt see any remarkable clue to make me think that. I agreed because Qui Gon said so, but actually, I was kind of dubitative. For example, when Ezra discovers his potential in the Force in SW Rebels season 1, I found that better expressed.

Don't forget George Lucas did the same at the 40 years SW panel at SWCO. It was humble but really honest. Great moment.
