Yea I think you make a good point. Only thing I could think is possibly the Imps joining the likes of jabba and pirates after endor. I know the empire did work with those types in some of the current canon but they may have loosened the morals a bit more after endor leading them to want support from the pirates and criminals.

Something else I was thinking was the rebellion pushing the empire back and slowly taking systems away from them forcing the empire to move from the core worlds to the outer rim. This would mean a heavier imperial presence on planets such as tat.

Most importantly though if the planet is tat I think it needs to serve a bigger purpose then just "hey! member dis place!?". I could see them possibly using it to show the impact this war has had on the galaxy and the people. To me tat was basically the same in ep1, ep2, ep4 and ep6 so any differences in tone or look would be easily noticeable to us SW fans and would send a quick message of the state of the galaxy compares to the previous 6 movies.

Great point and would be a very plausible and easily explainable scenario. Easily could be mentioned in the opening crawl.

Well at least the name of the planet will be revealed in the opening crawl, they always do in the previous 6 movies.

There was actually a rather long quasi-scientific paper written on how it was entirely plausible... I don't think that is it, but scientifically plausible it seems...

It's not been a slam dunk that the "Sand Planet" in the teaser trailer and concept art is Tatooine. I've heard that due to the leaked concept art, the terrain looks "different" and what not. I REALLY don't see how it could NOT be Tatooine.

I recently picked up a Star Wars concept art book and I stumbled onto a concept art piece by Doug Chiang that jumped out to me.

When the thought of starting a thread about the piece in question came to me, I could NOT find the piece on the web besides my book. I didn't look ENDLESSLY, but I found it odd that it's not easy to find. I ended up having to take a picture of it myself.

Here is the piece in question:

    anakin.jpg

The reason the picture JUMPED out to me is because...it reminded me of a few other concept paintings that were leaked out of The Force Awakens. What's also interesting is that I believe the following leaked photos are by the same artist, Doug Chiang. ( I could be wrong, but the signatures are somewhat similar albiet blurry. )

    ATAT1.jpg

    ATAT2.jpg

I can't help, but see the comparisons of the of the three examples. I know it's not a huge stretch to say that the sand planet IS Tatooine, but...hey....that's what speculation is for, right?

Personally, I would be disappointed if it wasn't Tatooine. It's the through line of all the films it seems and I love the rich history in the Saga it would hold if this is indeed true.

I was actually hoping for some new locations. Star Wars is a big universe and I'd like to see more of it.

    ^^This^^

But it is probably Tatooine. Still don't know why there are broken AT-AT:s there. What's there to fight for?

There has been a lot of speculation of it being Tatooine, it might take place in the desert of a green planet.

The recent spoiler mentioning the dry and flammable crop on farmland might suggest it isn't Tatooine if I was to play Devil's Advocate and say that if Tatooine could sustain crops, it wouldn't need moisture farms? ;) Personally, I'm no longer bothered if it is the same world or not.

If it is Tatooine and every other planet in TFA is one we haven't seen (but possibly heard mentioned before) I think it's cool. It would match up with what it seems everything else is going to be like. We get a little taste of the old but we also get a whole bunch of new.

Of interesting note. There has been a lot of debate about whether the sand planet is Tatooine or not. The argument against is that there does not seem to be two suns. However, I was watching AOTC with my one daughter this evening and noticed this observation. When Anakin and Padme landed on Tatooine it appears to be middle of the day and it is bright and sunny but you can't tell that if there are two suns or not. It is not until Anakin is going after his mom and it is sunset when the two suns are noticeable.

I started thinking back to ANH and when R2 and 3PO first land on Tatooine you can't tell how many suns there are. It is not until sunset when we see the two suns.

Therefore, I'm not sure if we can rule out Tatooine based on how the sky looks unless it is at sunset.

This is really interesting, maybe the variances in orbits and distances make the two suns adjacent to each other only at certain times of day? (I'm obviously not a physicist or even armchair astronomer)

I haven't gone back to verify, but if this is consistent throughout the series I think we can safely assume (yet still be proven wrong) the sand planet in TFA is Tatooine.

I think it's safe to assume at this stage: 03/2015, that:
    TFA will START on Tatooine.
There will be a huge battle or significant event either on the surface or directly about the planet.
Leia will have a scene addressing the remaining Hutt clan(council).
The IMAX scene may either be the 1st scene of the film or it may be the huge battle/event.
The film makers still have approx 09 months to add CGI fx, sound, music, etc.
I think it is Tatooine & it will have a pivotal role in TFA. Why I don't know.

So I have read some of the recent rumors about some of the film locations being savanna not desert. I am wondering if the planet we see in the trailer is actually Lothal. I know others (perhaps in this thread its been awhile since I read it all and this is a bit of Thread Necromancy) have mentioned it but it struck me recently. Lothal has a lot of high grasses and dusty dry grasslands. Savannas often give way in the dry season to what similar landscapes. This gives a whole new angle to the "oh we've seen that planet before" said during a Rebels marathon. Lothal has lots of Empire eara relics and made lots of Imp gear hence all the wreckage for people to search through.

    That's a good point.

My money is still on Tatooine for the fact that(in my opinion anyway) the structures from the sets all look distinctly Tatooinian. Huts constructed from sand, junk everywhere, sand dunes and what not. What we've seen of Lothal in the cartoon seems quite different to me. It almost reminds me of Dantooine.
