SPECULATION Sand Planet - Confirmed to be "Jakku"

I just want to point out that I suggested the name of the desert planet back in December and that it was tat.

 

Yup its Jakku alright. And not Tattoonie as some of us thought. Which is fine by me, I like we're getting new planets, seeing the galaxy is big. Sure why cant there be more then one desert planet?

 

I swore it was Tatooine, but something did kind of seem off about it. And well, now we know.

As for Jakku - Is this planet an all-new JJ Abrams creation? Or does it have roots in a novel or elsewhere?

I was hoping for some more creativity from JJ, especially after Into Darkness, and his creation of "Nibiru" (JJ didn't come up with that name! HA!) , which I thought looked awesome.

 

Well that's star wars for you anything is possible when it comes to planets etc, I hope Jakku lives up to more than being just a sand planet.

 

Will I applaud you for that.

 

I still think it is Tattooine, but they changed its name for some reason - the same way countries sometimes change their name. I suppose a possible reason they would change its name is because the Hutts are no longer in charge.

 

If you think about it, it would be incredibly dumb to hide Rey on Tatooine. The First Order might have it on record that Darth Vader grew up there and so did Luke while he was hiding in plain sight. Fool them once...

Notooine it is then. Should've went with a different climate and topography but I guess the tax breaks weren't good enough to do that!

 

Interesting theory. IIRC one of the leakers claimed there's a scene where Leia strikes a deal with the Hutts to help finance "The Resistance."

Although personally I agree with this:

 

Until we see the movie, I'm stubbornly sticking by this being Tatooine and not Jakoo. I still think we're in Mystery Box land. I'm not sure why it should be a mystery - or why having an almost identical sand planet in the films is necessary - but we'll all know by the end of Episode IX at the latest! ;-)

Speaking of planets - notice the snow planet the First Order is on?

 

So is this a totally new planet, not referenced anywhere in wookipedia/expanded universe etc, etc?

 

I think when the pre-production team was planning the story and overall feelings they want to invoke, they wanted to recall the same feelings expansiveness, and isolation Tatooine brought. Herre is how I imagine a pre-prod meeting going...

Someone raises their hand "But hasn't Tatooine appeared in Star Wars a lot?".

Some in the room defend using Tatooine "Its an iconic Star Wars location, and we should use it."

Finally, leadership says, "There must be other desert planets right? Its a big galaxy. Plus we want things to be "new", so we'll make a planet that looks like Tatooine, but call it...I don't know Jakku or soemthing."

Then the name stuck. Hopefully, we'll see the Savannah portion and other areas that differentiate it from Tatooine.

 

It was a lose/lose situation really after they decided they wanted a desert planet.

You'd have people going, "wow for a backwater Tatooine sure is important, and why did nobody think to look for...." you are already finishing that sentence for me. But on the other end we have what we are dealing with now, "oh so we have a Tatooine that is actually not Tatooine?"

They chose to make the narrative decision of a desert planet and decided the flak from creating a new one was less than the narrative benefits they got from it

 

I bet that we will visit Jakku in Rebels or in the Aftermath novel.

 

It'll probably turn up in a future expansion of SW:ToR, like, yeah, guys, it's always existed.

 

I feel like Jakku will be very different than Tatooine. We have only seen that it has sand. I'm sure the features will be different than what we have seen on Tatooine.

 

Did JJ getted booed when he said it was called Jakoo?
