"We discover Rey on the desert planet Jakku. She is a scavenger in like a ship graveyard and she is like completely self-sufficient. She does everything for herself and very solitary until she meets another character and an adventure begins." –Daisy Ridley (Star Wars Celebration 2015)

I agree with this. Yes it has sand but I think it might be an even more desolate place than Tatooine, possibly involved in a great past battle or maybe even so desolate The First Order uses it as a land fill basically.

RIght. Just because both Tunisia (Tatooine) and Abu Dahbi (Jakku) are both desert landscapes, they are different.

Yeah there may be next to no civilization on Jakku and it might be considerably smaller.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-04-17-star-wars-battlefront-has-40-player-cap

"The pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on a remote desert planet on the Outer Rim. Taking place in the aftermath of the Rebel victory in the Battle of Endor, players will experience the events that created the massive, battle-scarred landscape of Jakku shown in Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

"Meanwhile, there's word on a free downloadable level available two weeks before Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out in theatres in December. This is set on Jakku, which we see in the recent movie trailer.

The expansion is called Battle of Jakku and will explore the moment following Return of the Jedi when the New Republic confronted Imperial holdouts on the previously unseen Outer Rim enclave."

Maybe 20th Century Fox owns the rights to Tatooine on the big screen - and Marvel couldn't negotiate them back in time for the new movie.

    Marvel?
A description of Jakku has been revealed thanks to Star Wars: Battlefront.
A huge battle took place there right after Endor. The Rebels set up base there because there were not any big civilizations. Apparently the Empire gets their rear ends handed to them again.

Has anyone considered the possibility that Tatooine and Jakku are the same planet? Maybe there was a change of power and was simply renamed after the Battle of Jakku?

To have Episode I and Episode IV start off on Tatooine and then start off Episode VII on a planet that looks identical to Tatooine but isn't.. just doesn't add up to me. I also felt that JJ and friends were almost being sarcastic when they said it's called Jakku during the celebration.

    Any thoughts?

Tatooine and Jakku are two different planets. The battle of Jakku takes place about a year after Endor. One of the factions set up base there because there were no big settlements.

Just curious, where has it been officially stated that they are in fact different planets?

I find it curious that the post says New Republic and the props say resistance. I'm starting to think the New Republic was established but all hell has broken loose and their is no central government or not all system are in the New Republic or "First Order". Resistance implies that the "First Order" is trying to take over not that they are in control. A rebellion is when there is an established government and the citizen rebel from within. Resistance sounds like they are trying to keep the "First Order" out.

Maybe the New Republic is helping a non-New Republic system from being taken over by the "First Order".

JJ said it was a different planet and not on Tat.

Weren't there Star Wars commercials on Disney XD strongly hinting that the planet was Tattooine? What was that all about? And why does Jakku look exactly like Tattooine from space, as previous articles have noticed?

I'm not sure but JJ said its not tat that it's the new planet. Further it's confirmed with the battlefront as you will be able to fight the battle of jjakku.

That makes quite a bit of sense! I could live with that story. Although I am a little hesitant about Ren's backstory, it seems too much like Anakin/Vader, and it seems like a rehash, but that's kinda the point I guess. But him posing as Vader is pretty nifty.
