I've seen a whole lot of people speculating or even stating as fact the idea that the sandy planet we have seen is not Tatooine.

I don't know all the evidence that has been put forth to give this idea some weight but I do know somebody played with the brightness/contrast of the shots with the Falcon and claim they can clearly say there is only one sun(I couldn't even see one sun personally...just light).

    What other evidence is there?

All I know is A: It is a planet with little or no vegetation. B: There is junk everywhere. C: We've seen what looks like tusken raider style huts and I recall some moisture vaporators somewhere. D: Tatooine is a location that is very iconic and central to the SW saga. E: We've seen footage of a marketplace not unlike every other marketplace we've seen in the films, which were all on Tatooine.

It just doesn't make any sense to me that they would invent another desert planet with all the same features as Tatooine.

I watched A New Hope yesterday to compare. Sand dunes, flat terrain, blue sky... too damn similar. It's on the stupid side to make another planet just like the existing one and just slap another name on it. What is the point? Internet cred? "See guys we didn't reuse Tatooine...this planet is Notooine. So different!"

The head of the govt agency that runs the Abu Dhabi film industry has been saying it is Tatooine. I don't know if Noura Al Kaabi was told this in good faith but she was there to attend the filming and met with the actors.

Yeah, I don't think it proves anything, just that the light source is coming from one direction, no distinct "sun shapes" are visible, it's too bright to make out any contours.

There's no reason to believe we're seeing a different planet. Tatooine is simply too iconic to omit in this movie, regardless of whether we like it or not.

Don't forget we also see what appears to be a pod racer engine in the teaser trailer. (In the background when the new droid rolls by.) So either pod-racing is popular on all desert planets... or that there be Tatooine.

    Build sand castles...
I'm all seriousness though, in the shot where the Falcon is being shot at by TIE fighters, to me it looks like there is greenery on the ground towards the end if the clip off in the distance. Anyone else notice this or am I just retarded?

I'm fairly certain it's Tattoine. Looks the same. The planet is strongly tied to SW. It wouldn't feel right without it.

I've said it a LOT - ad nauseum - forced to reply to the ridiculous idea that this desert planet is a NEW desert planet and not the one that's been in 5 of the 6 other films.

So to show my sincerity - I'm making a bet in the Casino. Come on over and put your credits down. 100 credits it's Tatooine.

[IMG] 'Sand planet' on the TFA trailer.

[IMG] Tatooine on Star Wars Episode IV

I think the resemblance is too uncanny to not be the same planet, and since Tatooine is so iconic in the Star Wars universe, it wouldn't make sense to not have this planet as Tatooine.

Time to play Devil's Advocate. Copying and pasting this from another thread:
Making Star Wars has a better shot of this showing a singular light source in this specific shot (which is a single star, based on looking at the picture at an angle):

Another thing to consider is that, if this were Tatooine, the redder of the Twin Suns would be lower on the horizon.

    Just food for thought.

How many times have we seen both Tatoo 1 and Tatoo 2 in the same spot of sky at the same time in the films? Sunset. Ever seen the two suns during the daytime? There's some food for thought...suckers. ;-)

Again - it's not about tweaking some graphics or unveiling some concept art. We've got real sets (in Abu Dhabi and Pinewood) - and a GI-NORMOUS amount of history to tell us that if it is a desert planet in Star Wars (not EU crap - but the actual films that everything is based on) - then yes, it is Tatooine.

Maybe one sun is below the horizon? Maybe?

I'm with everyone else. It would make no sense at all to have an almost-the-same planet when we've already got Tats. I don't know why we keep going back to that well, but only one film didn't have it in it.

The single most boring planet is in all but one.

Shoot womp rats while flying T-16 Skyhoppers? ;)

In all seriousness though, I'm really confused. Jason Ward should be taken seriously, I consider him very strong intel after his correct description of the trailer, and even he doesn't really know if that's Tatooine. I don't think the Podracer engine can prove anything too, as we see a few of them racing on different planets in AotC (during the cantina scene).

If that were the case, it would be darker - look at how dim it is in the Revenge Of The Sith photo - one Sun is up while another is on its way down. Even in the shot in A New Hope, it's approaching dusk and the Suns haven't quite set yet, Logically, if only one Sun is up in The Force Awakens, it'd also be darker.

Also, both stars would be within a similar proximity (a few million kilometers) to one another from an astrophysical standpoint at any given time of the year. That would explain why the stars are at different distances from one another in the two movies (provided you take liberties with the orbit of the planet itself) - Tatooine would have been experiencing a different "season", so to speak.

That's my take on it, anyway.

    SPOILER:
If the reported(rumor) that Luke Skywalker's erratic & unbridled rage-fury is on Tatooine.
He might go bonkers & bring down a sun. That may be the "Acient Fear" plot.
Luke & his immense Force power may be so destructive he ruins the eco-structure of Tatooine.

Star Wars has always been about planets with different environments so that the viewer can immediately know where the scene is taking place. I thought Geonosis and Tatooine in Attack Of The Clones were too similar-looking. I highly-doubt that another desert planet will be created to REALLY confuse the viewer.

Oh man, you're right, there was a rumour that Luke destroys one of the suns of Tatooine and this is the reason he decides to contain himself and go exile.

The rumor was about a cataclysm, but it didn't say what happened. For all we know, Luke could have crushed a Moon or something (the guy did mention that there were a ton of craters involved). Still, that's something worth keeping in mind, thanks for bringing it back up.

If Tatooine were to lose one of its stars, that may actually help its environment! However, that assumes the event doesn't throw its revolution around the remaining star into an elliptical orbit.

I was going to say that if Luke had 'retired' on Tatooine, it would be one of the worst locations for him to think he's safe, it being the world he grew upon and where he destroyed Jabba's empire, BUT maybe to the galaxy at large it's not common knowledge Luke came from Tatooine and maybe Han and Luke kept knowledge of their involvement in Jabba's death secret too (if we assume that all Jabba's courtiers were on that sail barge when it blew) ... or, the reason why Han has 25 bounties on his head is partly down to his killing Jabba and subordinate scum, but he didn't implicate Luke and Leia as his co-conspirators.

One possible reason why the Millennium Falcon is on this desert world (if we think it's Tatooine) may be that Han, knowing he may never have the chance to fly it again (because of larger responsibilities to the remodelled and larger Rebel Alliance), has given it to Luke as a transport to that planet, and to keep it hidden in case Luke should ever require a very quick exit. The rumour of a scene featuring Han and Chewbacca on that desert world and being so pleased to be reunited with the Falcon might fit this scenario (they used an unregistered transport or hitched a ride with smugglers to get there) ... ?

Another idea is that Han, discovering the Empire has suddenly become very active near Tatooine, immediately assumes Luke's the target of such and races there to warn him because any attempts to contact Luke using comm-tech would be intercepted and give the game away?
