We've heard a lot of scuttlebutt about the Rebels, the new cast, the old cast, and even the ships. But what we haven't heard is who is in charge of the Empire at present. We know Palpatine and his major domo Vader are dead, and the only other cannon high ranking baddie died in Star Wars 1977 (Tarkin). So is there a new emperor? Is it run by a few evil Moffs or perhaps it's ran by a baddie that Lucasfilm is keeping super tight wraps on. I remember a few months back that there was a rumor that a very major player had yet to be named by LFL and playing a undisclosed role. Perhaps this actor is it. The fanboy in me is still holding out hopes for Cumberbatch, but I highly doubt it.

Opinions? Has anyone heard something that I missed?

The MAN is in charge and we all know who the MAN is.

So far I am thinking the Imperial Remnant is a military oligarchy but that is in absence of an actor being declared the Emperor. If the Chromtroopers are titled Inquisitors that leaves room for a Grand Inquisitor.

In ANH, Moff Tarkin said the regional governors would wield authority in the place of the Imperial Senate. My guess is that these regional Moffs are in some cases still in control of their respective territories.

I always thought it would be cool if the Moffs are running things at the start and Kylo Ren is kind of the commander of the military similar to Luke in ESB rising through the ranks. Maybe at the end he takes total control.

Great post and questions. Something I've been wondering myself. Myself personally, I don't like the idea of Empire still existing and having major power. I think it's a stretch and it's only serves the purpose for nostalgia purposes. But it is what it is I guess and apparently they are in it. I think the only way it makes sense to have the Empire in this is if they remnants trying to gain power and they are similar to what the rebels were in ANH. But again who's their leader and more importantly who supports them financially. After the death of the emperor the logical next step would be for the alliance to regain the banks. So who's financially supporting this new empire? Who's paying for their weapons new stormtrooper armor etc etc?

That may be but again this leads to my question above. Where's the money coming from?

From taxation and tribute on the worlds that comprise Imperial territory, as well as arms sales and other such dirty dealings.

I would like some old half crazed dogmatic imperial officer thats been around since the Galactic Civil War, as long as he isn't the main antagonistic focus of the movie. Maybe kill him off in 8.

After the Emperor's death, I imagine there was a power vacuum that lead to many factions battling each other. One faction gaining sway only to be usurped by another. This fighting could have lasted for decades without any significant stabilization. My impression was that the heads of the empire directly beneath the Emperor represented factions of an aristocracy. Maybe after years of suffering, a resentment for this aristocracy has spread throughout the lower ranks of the empire. This would create a good environment for an extremist faction to take root. Kylo Ren and the inquisitors may represent a revolutionary movement who either seek to control the empire, or already do. The result could be a less organized but far more brutal imperial remnant, that resembles ISIS. In my opinion this would make the conflict more topical.

After Sidious was fried on the second death star many imperial admirals, officers etc stated their claim to be the new emperor, all the names I remember are from EU so it's wide open.

We have all brought up that it seems there are a lot of characters so that could easily cause too much going on. A lot of people have expressed concern about TFA being complicated. I don't think it will be because topics like this one and other questions of what happened in the 30 year gap will be very simple and easily answered to help avoid background story complicating what is going on with the characters.

I'm clinging to my hope of an after-credits scene that takes place on the bridge of a star destroyer, with an imperial officer speaking to a blue-skinned Cumberbatch.
    "Yes, Grand Admiral."

I guess I look at it this way....the Soviet Union fell in the 80's....we still gots Russia, and their military still looks..........alot.....like.........the Soviet Union's military. Of all the things we've heard about TFA, the Empire's existence was like the least of my worries.

I find it completely conceivable that the "Empire" (quotes intentional) could still be around 30 years hence. There may not be an Emperor per se, but the leaders would understand the value of brand equity and keep the troopers in white armor and still use 'that song.'

    Capiche?

I think the Imperial Empire will be broken off into factions or loosely banded confederates who keep fighting the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Republic.
Gran Moffs or Governors might have fleets or small armies.
The "new" bad guy(my $$$ is on Plaguis) may eliminate the upper level command staff & governors then go after the Republic. The WMD might eliminate Rebel leader Mon Marta which leads to Leia being supreme leader for decades.
