My thinking is, the movie ends pretty much as MSW says it will with Rey meeting Luke at Skellig. I think the big twist will be that it starts to rain, and the final shot is what we have seen in the trailers, with Kylo and the Knights of Ren, lightsabre drawn in the rain, finally having found Luke by following Rey, and preparing to attack. That scene is not a flashback as everyone thinks.

I'm fine with Luke only being in it for the ending, but that being said, I don't want it to be some five second cameo. I would hope that he has some important dialogue and explains his absense for a few short minutes. And while I like the idea of a "big 3" reunion, I don't think it's 100% necessary. As another poster previously stated, that's what the OT was for.

Honestly, as long as the ending isn't some huge sequel-bait thing with Luke, I won't complain.

Brother, beggars can't be choosers. I'll just be happy with what they give us at this point. Of course if we never see the OT big 3 back together in The Force Awakens, or Luke do anything in it, the least they could do is give him a bigger part in Episode 8 and have him do some awesome stuff (like force tricks, breaking out that green lightsaber of his, etc). Fighting with Rey would be awesome. I'd love to see that, but it's ultimately just making the best out of a bad situation, which, hey, I'll gladly accept at this point. I can't say I'll ever forgive them for doing what they're doing with Luke (cameo, no Luke/Han/Leia interaction, etc) in The Force Awakens though, but that will just be the film's place in history then. After that, it won't make up for it, but hopefully they treat the character well and have him do cool stuff in the next films. That would be nice. I'd like to see him kick ass well before Act 3 of Episode 9, essentially the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the saga....don't get me wrong, I'll take that too, but I want to see Luke as much as possible ASAP, particularly after the disappointing situation with him in Episode 7, so hopefully we see him how we've wanted to far before the finale of the final film in the new trilogy.

yup, I am starting to think you will not even hear Luke say a word. But, look at it this way we will have Luke most likely be the Yoda of Episode 8. Sadly, it doesn't look like we will get to see the big three on screen together again. Hopefully, they fill the gap with some adventures in books or comics. At this point I can only hope that MSW is wrong and we don't just get a cameo of Luke.

his credit will read if he is a cameo.....

If Luke narrates it might be like the movie Twins
"On his 35th birthday I decided to tell Kylo the truth about himself"
"I have a sister?!?!? She's probably just like me!!!"
Then later when he captures Rey, he's trying to talk to her through the window of her cell, she points to the com and when he picks it up she says
"you've gotta speak into the com bozo"
That's why he gets so mad at her and storms off

Yeah, but for all we know that could mean he's only in the film for 5 minutes and never leaves his little hutt on Skellig Michael, and we never see him kick ass and do awesome stuff or use his green lightsaber again and be a f**king hero like we've all wanted.....and that still sucks a ton. :(

    Yup, I agree....

It's going to make me irate seeing his name in the credits in bold like that right after seeing his 2 second cameo...just rubbing it right in our faces...

I don't have any problem storywise with a 6-second wordless Luke cameo at the end; it may even work well looking at the series 5 or so years from now when there's no "where's Luke?" anticipation building. I do however have a problem with the wisdom of the marketing and the whole absence of Luke and hype-building over the event. If there's really only a 6-second cameo of Luke (I still doubt that) then they may as well have used the shot in the trailer you know what I mean? Then made sure to leak "don't expect a lot of Luke in this one..." not to market this huge angle only for a 6-second cameo. Unless somehow you make the 6 seconds so jampacked with awesome that it provides catharsis of some kind.

Stunt doubles are used for action scenes, not dialogue scenes.
The ending will be Luke and Rey vs Knights of Ren aka Luke's stunt double and Rey's stunt double vs suited and booted stunt doubles.
When Abrams teases and says things like "I can't wait for you to see" etc in response to "where Luke? do we see Luke?" etc THIS is what he is talking about. THIS is the big secret ending. :D

Star Wars movies always end on a positive, even the ones that don't exactly have a "happy ending." They're also devoid of dialogue and sound effects, with only the finale of the score being heard. That's just how the movies are done. It's as integral and iconic to the film series as the opening scroll. It won't be changed.

I predict the ending is exactly as described, with Chewie and Rey arriving at the planet, and Rey entering the temple alone, meeting a cloaked figure, giving him the saber, the figure lowers his hood and we finally see Luke's face, maybe he ignites the saber or maybe he doesn't, then credits. It'll be a gut punch for MANY people, but it's also the perfect ending for THIS story. We have to establish Rey, Finn and Poe as the heroes of this trilogy. It's not Luke, Leia or Han. Each character has to have an arc that allows them to do things that their predecessors can't. Maybe Finn is actually a Force user, making him stronger than Han. Maybe Poe is not just a great strategic mind but also a badass pilot, something Leia never was. And maybe it's as simple as Rey being young, something that Luke will never again be. Who knows at this point. But the bottom line is Luke's story is over. His character now is only to serve the development of this new batch of heroes. If we don't believe in them, trust them, and like them, then Star Wars is DONE. Therefore we have to focus on them and allow the older characters to simply support, not lead.

I'm sure we will see him in the "flashback" along with Han and Leia. It isn't the same as seeing them together in the current time frame, but we will see them post ROTJ nonetheless.

I know having the ending as MSW explains it s Luke it a final shot be handed a SABER.
The journey is complete, she has found him and needs deer ole dad's help.
    It would be actually EPIC

but man, as LUKE fan I would be upset. I know that books and media can fill it in but LUKE JEDI is da bomb man.....

Totally agree with you @Chairman Kaga. Also, I totally agree with your username.

I've honestly been rather surprised by the reaction to Luke's likely "cameo" role. Granted, I was born three years after RotJ hit theaters, so maybe my connection to the characters is different from many on the boards. But I always saw Luke as pure archetype. An empty vessel that the story plays through. And that's a good thing! But it never endeared me to him as a character, it endeared me to the story. To me, Luke was always the least interesting of the Big Three, and that's by design—he a walking story arc.

But there's a couple of other thoughts, too. First is, like, whoa, chill out homies, there's two more movies. Luke will play a huge role in them. I truly believe he will. ANd he should.

I think Luke once again taking up the mantle of leadership and training new Force-sensitives in Ep. VIII-IX—in the face of ruthless villain with (potentially) a personal connection to the Skywalker line, along with an avowed, neurotic obsession with the Skywalkers—will be awesome, and will give us a healthy dose of Luke As True Jedi Master wish-fulfillment.

The only thing that's really bugged me: If Han dies on the Starkiller, Luke never gets to say goodbye. Very true, very sucky. Of course, that's how life works sometimes. It would be sad, and I admit I'd be disappointed not to see one last interaction between the smuggler and the farmboy made good. But that's all the more reason for Luke to return, to be a hero again, and to care for and guide our new heroes.

From a fan service perspective, it may be disappointing. From a three-movie or nine-moving storytelling point of view, I think it's absolutely perfect.
