I never questioned Leia being a Skywalker.

This discussion has moved on (thankfully), so I don't want to backtrack too much... But just so you know, I was never trying to suggest that adopted children are not part of a family when I said that a surname is just a label. Quite the contrary! My point was simply that whether someone shares your last name or not has no bearing on whether they are family, just as someone who is not biologically related but does take your name through adoption is family. My statement about the surname being a meaningless label was just to drive home the point that there seemed to be a preoccupation with the Skywalker name (and only men being able to pass it on) that doesn't necessarily have to happen... that's all.

Back to the current discussion, I actually really like the idea of Luke's estranged wife, mother of Rey, going dark. After all, Luke was able to redeem the unredeemable Darth Vader. It seems as though part of his character is attracted to those who are not purely good. He sees past the bad and embraces the good in everyone, so I could totally believe that he hooked up with a morally grey character and things went dark, so to speak, at least for a while...

    Gotcha! ;)

And to the quote; Oh hell yes...I could see it happening and whether Rey knows or not who he is to her...now he potentially has to explain who her mother is. It could be good!

So what is the source of Rey being Luke's? How credible??

It's purely speculative, like everything else at this point. ;)

Didn't someone from this forum who has a reliable source say he was told she's Luke's daughter so it's more than speculation, no?

This may be coming right outta left-field, but I was wondering something.

It seems logical that for personal/political reasons, Leia wouldn't want to be associated with the name Skywalker (and in particular her father) but I'm wondering if perhaps Rey, as her hypothetical daughter, feels more of a connection there and decides to take up the Skywalker name.

It would be a way of definitively carrying forward the Skywalker name whilst sidestepping a lot of the concerns that people (rightfully) seem to have about her being Luke's daughter.

(Also I just think that it might be kinda funny if she's introduced as Rey Skywalker, and we all assume that means she's Luke's daughter and it turns out she's his niece).

Well Leia has a lot of political things going on. Even if it is common knowledge that Luke and Leia were the children of Anakin Skywalker and that Vader turned against the Emperor and Skywalker is a name that isn't political suicide. Even with all this Leia is actively in her comics rallying the survivors of Alderan she is taking her commitment to HER people seriously so Leia Organa makes a certain sense even if she is happily married to Han her role is leader of the exiles of Alderan hence the political heartstring would be Organa.

What if Skywalker becomes a common name (Like Antillies) after Luke hero of the Rebellion and all. Perhaps there are lots of people naming babies Skywalker. So much so that when Rey (rumored to be an alias) needs a name she chose Rey Skywalker.

This is an interesting idea...Luke´s wife (or girlfriend) went dark....and he had to kill her, or she died in some other way, or she isn´t dead at all and we´ll gonna see her in the next......no, no...this is something we´we all seen once, remember....but definitely a possibility...How did my mother died? A young Jedi named Snorkle, who was my best friend - next to Han Solo of course - before he wanted your mother for himself and become evil.......

Besides the fact that Skywalker is a surname and thus most babies would´n be named with it, everything is possible - theoretically - in the galaxy far far away, but not in the local multiplex with average moviegoer who wants a more simple explanation, because he eats popcorn, drinks cola and that consumes most of his grey matter, so he hasn´t enough rest for your theory :)

Jeeeeez, how many times do I have to tell you that I want Rey to be LUKE´S daughter, not Leia´s!!! :) :) :)

People have plenty of opportunities to change their names in times of great turmoil or celebration. For instance freed slaves picked for themselves last names in many instances. I am well aware that Skywalker is a Surname but I am also aware that people change names.

What if Finn is the real Skywalker. Lot of people hate the idea of Rey turning to the Darkside. But what if she does? Lots of press has already labeled Finn the new "Luke Skywalker." All this name throwing around like biology and human (not GFFA) naming conventions mentioned. What if Rey goes Darksidey runs off on her own mission of revenge. Luke pops in hey chin up Finn, the force runs strong in my family . . . you have that power too. The Skywalker baton is passed.

This was a fitting ending to the "Great Surname Debate of 2015!" I'm happy, yet a little sad that it is over. I'm a fan of people debating. I get a kick out of it.

This would be an interesting way to take the series if they could do it right. Mommy goes dark and Luke hides Rey in hopes that Mommy will never find her. After which is when Luke goes into hiding thinking Mommy will go looking for him because she believe Baby Rey if with Luke but it's just a giant ruse by Luke! Could also turn to be a nice little Easter egg to (sigh) the end of ROTS. This would also mean that Mommy would have to be the big bad come IX.

You are assuming it was common knowledge that Anakin turned and became Darth Vader. There are only a few people who could give you an eye witness account of who Vader really was. All but two of them died not long after finding out, and the other two lived in isolation the rest of their lives. Tarkin seems to have known per ANH, but he was in the inner portion of the inner circle of the Emperor. It is entirely possible that it was a big secret that Anakin was the one who turned.

Hence the "even if" in the second sentence.

My whole point was that she likely would keep Organa in her name for her people's sake.

I think it adds a lot more weight to why Rey would be so involved in finding Luke. Unless she has some separate revelation and decides she wants to be a Jedi like those of legend, it could be that she eventually finds out (from Maz or Kylo) that the lightsaber she is hiding from the First Order is her father's.

I love this whole thing. I grew up from two years old with step parents on either side, a random and rotating number of grandparent-types as part of that package, a half sister, and a stepbrother. Don't even get me started on how my sister's kids talk about their weird relations among step-beings and halflings :) Better still! I've also donated to a lesbian couple and we behave as family because we literally are, it was just orchestrated in a dish and I'm a favorite uncle (because there are many!), but the kid ALSO knows that I'm the donor.

I've literally been having conversations like this since I was old enough to try and explain how my family works and I will have conversations like this, explaining how my family works, until the day that I die. The twins were adopted. Family gets complicated, it's tracked both matrilineally and patriarchally, and it gets all mixed together to work in certain ways.
