For me I like to look at things in a practical sense rather than have an agenda.

Being realistic, it is a problem for SOME, not most but SOME people that Boyega has a major role in this film.

Unfortunately, there's no news like controversial news. And the negativity gets picked up, and now, that racism story won't go away. That is just how it will be.

I thought red-herring just meant something rare or "against the grain". Time will tell.
He is adept at acting for rolling cameras... Misdirection?
I'll take extra Jedi but hold the dogma in the next Order please!

    Question.

What about those excited to see Finn being a Jedi, and not really into the Rey character.

I guess it's like "ha! I guess we fooled you!"

On the topic of a red-herring.

The original trilogy never had one, the prequel trilogy never had one.....why is this so special that there NEEDS to be a red-herring?

Where did i say he wasn't one? I think there is a high chance that he will be at some point in the trilogy.

    Why is this so controversial?

Finn being a red-herring and a padawan/jedi is more than likely the end result. All i am saying is that there NO...ZERO....NADA connection between using finn as a redherring and his potential to be a force user.

I just don't get how this is controversial or pessimistic on finn, all i'm saying is both things can happen and people in here STILL THINK i mean that it's either/or

    FAR OUT!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

    Okay, I'm confused.

So you are saying that he does have the force and will be a jedi later on....but in this film he is a red-herring for rey to ultimately accept her destiny and take the saber off him?
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 30, 2015, Original Post Date: Nov 30, 2015 ---

    True, won't argue with that.

Like Daisy Ridley crying when she watched the trailer. Most likely an act. After all, they are actors, so we can never know if they are acting or not.

    Who knows.

If a Red-Herring is meant to "distract" us from something "important"

HOW DOES THAT EFFECT FINN'S POTENTIAL TO BECOME A PADAWAN/JEDI???

If we weren't following the spoilers, the marketing material shows us that finn takes up the weapon of a jedi, he is fighing for a new cause, and Rey is this unknown character that seems to be someone, but we don't know who. We are following finn and rey's story. By Finn being more prominent, openly fighting for good, while we continue to get mysterious idea's of who rey is, we are drawn into Finn's story, only for rey to "show her importance" towards the end.

supposedly....and it's not like we assume she keeps it, more than likely it is returned to luke, we have no idea if he gives it to rey or finn later on.

Just like people think Adam Driver is playing along and got paid to act like hes Kylo Ren, while Luke is really the one behind the mask, no.. I don't think its misdirection. It was a genuine reaction with him and his close friends, and IMO I felt it was him confirming hes atleast force sensitive and not a Jedi per se

Edit: Remember it wasn't that long ago that Boyega said him and JJ have a laugh over the fact that fans still have no idea who/what Finn really is, and we heard similar comments by Oscar Issacs about Poe and Ridley about Rey when she mentioned fans getting her face tattooed on them. We have no idea.. We could be in for a massive curve.

@AllHailVader, I completely get what @Charlie07 is trying to get at and was going to make a similar point. Let's see if I can clear up all of the confusion. First, let's get rid of the term red herring for a second. Second let's say that there is no question that Finn is force sensitive. It is obvious that Finn is being marketed in a way to tell us all, and most importantly the general movie going public, that he is force sensitive/Jedi. Rey is not being marketed that way. The general audience is not saying "wow that girl is going to be a Jedi". Take my 9 and 7 year old girls. I'm keeping them spoiler free. I did tell them when the movie was first being cast that it looked like there would be a new female lead Jedi. When they first saw Finn with Anakin's/Luke's blue saber their first reaction was "Rey is not going to be a Jedi". Without going into any spoilers with them, I reassured them that there still is a chance she becomes one.

That is what @Charlie07 is getting at. They are marketing Finn heavily with the saber to make everyone focus in on his potential force sensitivity/Jediness (just made up a word there) in order to hide the fact to the general public that Rey is force sensitive/Jedi as well. The general public is going to have the same response my daughters had.

Now we can bring the term red herring back into the picture. The marketing as it stands now is a red herring in the fact that by focusing on Finn's jediness (there's that made up word again) it is hiding Rey's jediness ;) It is not meant to imply that Rey is a Jedi and Finn is not n

I hope that clears things up

What I don't understand from this theory is the following:
They are also hinting, specially in the second trailer, that there is a new Skywalker. I think Rey will be the first character most people are going to expect to fill this role.

There hasn't to be, doesn't there, because Star Wars is inherently A "Skywalker Story."

Witness how i get to the dark side of thecantina with this comment.

Rey's the main character. She's a Skywalker and a force sensitive jedi, the protagonist of the new trilogy. Finn is just a former stormtrooper who gets a chance to use a light saber for a while, not a jedi. He's a good friend, but only a sidekick. He's advertised as one of the leads only in countries where racial diversity is huge (like the U.S. and others). In many countries including mine all the marketing of this movie is clearly about Rey Vs Kylo like this:

I agree in that teaser they did hint of a new Skywalker and that most might assume it is her. However, since that time, none of the materials released focus on that. I think that as the public sits through the movie and we are introduced to Rey we will sit and wonder if she is it. I dont think we will know for sure until she accepts her destiny at the very end of the film. I am also not convinced we learn her true parentage in this movie. I think a lot of us assume we find out in the flashback sequence. However, I think we may only find out why she doesn't want the saber. So while most may think she is the next Skywalker they are going to try to distract us from it by making it look like Finn will be the only Jedi.

Now before someone jumps all over me and says that "but Daisy said in an interview that we will find out who her parents are". However, that is not what she said. She said she knew. She then also said something along the lines of we will find out the answer to the biggest question. I don't think the biggest question is who is Rey's parents? The biggest question, which is the biggest one right now and as people watch the movie, is going to be where the F**K is Luke? And that question will be answered.

I think in both posts you have explained it very well. I also think the issue we are facing is trying to discuss what we know as a "spoiler collective" compared to what the marketing etc are trying to tell a general public audience.

As i mention before, people should go back and watch reaction videos to the first trailer where finn ignited the sabre, a vast majority of people said he was "the jedi" of TFA. Thus "misdirecting" the "importance" of Rey. We as "spoiler collective" already know the rey story, people who just watch 2-3 trailers and do not go online theorising about TFA, have been "Red-herringed". THUS, back to my original point, "Red-Herring" and "force/jedi potential" are not exclusive concepts and are not "either/or" statements. Both are permissible. :)

I think that Finn will be similar to Han Solo in The ST. Except funnier. He is Rey's foil to her needs of when they're needed as well as a potential love interest.

I can't believe you got off topics for this. Awesome post. I totally agree. I'm not even worried about it. It's quite obvious Finn is force sensitive and we are less than three week's away from from the release. JJ himself stated in the Wired interview that Rey and Finn are two characters whom the "force is very much about". I'm kinda done with the back and forth about Finn is or Finn isn't. Time to let the movie do the talking. ;)

Interesting. What country do you live in? When 12 years a slave was marketed in Italy Brad Pitt was the focus on posters and not the main character Chiwetel. Pitt was in the movie for less than 10 minutes. Supposedly European countries its harder selling movies with black leads so marketing departments do what they have to do to sell to their people. But then again its Star Wars so maybe that doesn't apply. Still very interesting though I would love to see all different advertising campaigns per region.

I am probably one of the biggest "SJW," "feminazi" people on this site, and even I think a lot of these Finn "defenders" are just being silly now. The racism against Finn has been absurd, and there is no place for it in any place or franchise; however, the idea that a large portion of people are refusing to believe Boyega will be a jedi or the main character because he is black is, in my opinion, pushing it outside of the realm of reality. I am positive there are people who are vocally or secretly against Finn's character because he is black, just as I am sure there are people who are vocally or secretly against Rey's character because she is a woman. Are we going to ignore the fact that Rey being "highlighted" and Finn being "sidelined" has mainly to do with the MSW leaks, which are becoming more and more accurate each and every day? Rey does not have to be the hero or the "jedi." I want her to be the hero, that is for sure, but I have no issue with Finn becoming a jedi as well. Originally, I did think Finn was "the hero," as in the primary protagonist, and now I think it will be Rey. If it is Finn, then fine. Since there's honestly no reason to disbelieve it now, considering how much they have gotten right, it would not make any sense for Rey to be reluctant to accept the force, likely be the daughter of Luke or Han and Leia, live a life of isolation on a desert world like other protagonists have, help Finn fight back against Kylo after he is disarmed (haha), and then find Luke on some secret island to likely begin her training and not be the protagonist. If anything, I see people who will not accept that Rey is the "main character." It could be either of them, it could be both, but try not to get so invested into Finn unequivocally being above everyone else, because then you are going to be setting yourself up for disappointment in a little over two weeks.

I totally agree. Some of this stuff is frankly absurd. The anti woman stuff seems a little bit more veiled than the race baiter stuff. You got whole threads about Finn cutting his own head off. I for one love strong female lead franchises like Buffy, Alias, etc Its a win win for me.

At the beginning i felt it was more a dual protagonist thing now I'm leaning more towards Rey as main protag with Finn having possibly a secret origin that will shock. Maybe Kylo will becomes a character we eventually root for and we can stop all this division.
