    Hello there!

There seems to be a new thread every other minute regarding the film, and whilst I’m sure many of us have many, many things to say (I know I do), I personally feel that it would be best to bring everyone’s reactions (for their initial viewing, their second viewing, or even their fiftieth) of the film together in one place: not just for the sake of users, but to streamline what I imagine must already be a very stressful time for our lovely moderators and staff.

So, what did you think? What did you like? What didn’t you like? What surprised you? What did you predict right, or wrong, or sort of both? And, whilst it’s early and I’m positive that many more viewings are required by us all to truly comprehend what we’ve seen, what’s your initial gut reaction to the film: do you love it, like it, dislike it, or outright hate it?

    Sad inside.

Didn't feel like the SW I love.

I'll try again tomorrow. But first run, not good...

    Heartbreaking to admit that.

Pro: Loved many of the surprising twists and turns and how unpredictable the movie was. Loved how Disney showed some balls trying to do something completely different. The special effect when the Supremacy was destroyed was the most visually stunning scene I have ever seen in a SW movie (maybe any movie in general). I also loved the many new worlds we got to see.

Cons: Hated how little information we got about Snoke. If all he did was to establish Kylo as the new leader of the FO then why not start with Kylo as the big baddy in TFA? It just doesn't make sense unless we get some answers in IX. What feels kinda weird is that there is no longer a big bad guy to antagonise; no longer a wise Jedi master to look up to. TLJ felt like a finale and not like the second part of a trilogy.

Verdict: In general I feel positively overwhelmed but also kind of lost. This might sound weird but my final oppinion on TLJ will strongly be dependent on IX. Ask me again what I think of TLJ in about 2 years time.

I’m struggling to disagree with you here. Certain shots in the film, such as this one, are very, very heavily influenced by either anime or samurai films. This was definitely a case of the former, and it was so, so beautiful.
Thing is, I even said that I thought this would go one of two ways: Snoke escapes and Ben/Kylo is left in a grey area, leaning towards redemption, or Ben goes much darker and kills Snoke, taking control of the First Order for himself.

And here I am, having thought that for well over a year...stunned that Rian went with the latter as opposed to the former: I thought that there was no way in the galaxy that this was what Rian and LFL would decide to do with Snoke and Ben.

I think that there’s going to be a bit of a gap between TLJ and IX at this point, in terms of the timeline, simply considering the return of the slightest romantic hint between Poe and Rey which we were non-canonically introduced to at the end of TFA’s novelisation, and the call to war at the end of the film.

I’m starting to think that Ben was always destined to go down this path, and Snoke being around did little more than put him on the path sooner.

    Didn't enjoy it.
Felt there was too much humour which mostly felt out of place, especially right at the beginning.
Some of the Luke stuff was alright, but overall I'm really disappointed in where this film takes him. In fact, it makes me not really care where the third film goes. And also, its stupid o'clock in the morning, i'm going to bed.

Which still feels incredibly unsatisfying. First af all we don't know Snoke's intentions. Snoke's goals have always been what we assumed to be Kylo's goals. If we don't know why Snoke is evil then we don't know why Kylo is evil. If we don't know why Snoke manipulated Kylo into turning against his loved ones and become evil then Kylos hate and internal struggle doesn't head towards any goal. We don't know why Snoke wanted Luke dead, why Luke was important to him. Luke said he went into exile to die there, he showed no intentions of stopping Snoke from whatever it is he was planning.

I can already hear some people say: "Well, we didn't know the Emperors intentions either" but there is one really important difference. The big problem is that the Empire, and the Emperor for that matter didn't need their goals to be explained in detail. They already were excactly where they wanted to be, in a position of power. As they were already ruling the Galaxy it goes without saying that their goals would be directed towards not losing this power. The FO however is not in that position which is why we need more context as far as Snoke's motivations are concerned.

Whilst some of the humour in the film landed with me, I have to admit...I’m right there with you, especially in the opening scene/s. There were a few times where it just felt like a little too much, and whilst I’m all for humour, I think it serves a specific purpose in humanising the characters.

Too many jokes makes me question whether the characters are human or not, or, in another case, a droid, or not.

I have some troubles with Kylos path. The Crait "battle" was strange. I have a lot to think off.
The message that anybody could be the one to bring hope to a rebellion was a good one.
Strangly the whole FO side, except Kylo, was hilarious.
The film was a kind of an anti-war war film and showed the stupidity of the whole game if you look behind the curtain... some people earn money from both sides and some wast their lives for people like Snoke

The more I think about it the more I think that regardless our personal takes on the movie...
It's a mess if put in the context of this trilogy.
The narrative - a cohernt, compelling one - it's blasted up.

loved it. After the prequels, TFA and TLJ have reinvigorated my love for star wars.

Loved everything but the resistance plot. I could've watched Hamill-Daisy-Driver for 2:30 and not given one stuff about the resistance plot.

Utterly broken after that. Furious after the first screening

Felt a lot better about it after the second. But still totally spinning.

We may come to love this film. It will take a long time though.

And not sorry but that entire Finn and rose storyline served absolutely no purpose whatsoever and drags the film down.

saw it yesterday and I loved it. Loved the way Rian answers and in the same breath not answers our questions ( Snoke and Rey ) loved hux role, Phasma was much more bad ass, Looooooove Lukes story arc and how we are reminded that it was Lukes way in the OT that brought victory not the traditionel jedi/Sith way. I didn't get bored with finn/rose story arc, loved DJ as a character, to me the resistance story was so much better than TFA even though it was simpel and to the point, loved the creatures hell even loved the the poghs. This has me really looking forward to Rians triolygy . Maaaaaaan I love star wars, ever since 77 and the love is still going strong ;)

Interesting film with a lot to unpack. I know I enjoyed it but I'm still not sure about how to take it all just yet.

    Some likes:
    • Felt like SW.
    • Score.
    • Silly/fun surprises e.g. Luke throwing cursed sabre over his shoulder, Yoda laughing at Luke while his world burns.
    • Seeing Chewie pilot The Falcon like a boss.
    Unsure about:
    • Leia - some great missed opportunities to see Leia go down for her cause.
    • Some characters seemed a bit more scattered than I expected. It was hard to see what was driving their thinking and actions in places with their convictions less concrete or obvious this time around.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to another watch...

I already posted my reaction in another thread, but @Julius Fett is right when he is proposing that the reactions be stated in one place. So to summarize:

    1. After the first (and probably last) viewing, I dislike the movie a lot. Don't hate it. It's not a bad movie - it has too much great CGI and too many great actor performances to be a bad movie. But hell the writing was terrible. Rian Johnson usurped Star Wars to be the talk of town and to be edgy.
    2. Why the hell did they kill off Snoke? They make up all this expectations, play with you and then the opposite happens. Surprises are good up to a point, but this was just cheap. "Didn't expect this, did ya?" No, I didn't expect a Star Wars movie to be like this. I also don't expect snow in the Sahara. Right after I said to myself "wow, Snoke is such a menacing guy", he fails to notice someone is igniting a lightsaber next to him. How stupid.
    3. They never really explained the Force, they hyped it up like never before and we get just some nonsensical ramblings about balance.
    4. Instead, we get the Kylo Ren show and his creepy interactions with Rey, who tries to be the woman who turns the bad guy good. How original.
    5. Not all of it was bad. Sonme of it was pretty good. I liked the Porgs.
    6. CGI and space battles were awesome. Humor was mostly good. Fight scene between Rey, Kylo and guards was good too, but I feel like Yoda or some other highly-skilled Jedi would have wiped the floor with them. Yes, a story is not a wikipedia page, I get it. But to me as a nerd, these inconsistencies matter. I follow all of canon and just doing something that's "cool" is not enough for me.
    7. I'm in the minority in this - I rather liked the Canto Bight part of the movie and how they freed the Falthiers.
    8. Other than that, I feel like Finn was wasted.
    9. How they handled Luke is just shameful.
    10. Favorite character was probably Hux.
    11. Overall I give this movie a 4/10. Rian Johnson wanted to be original no matter the cost and in my subjective eyes, it backfired. I'm very, very disappointed.

However, I understand if some people like or oven love it, it's all subjective after all. I'm happy for the people who liked it, truly. It's important that we remain respectful to each other and to the filmmakers.

I do not think it sound weird. As I wrote in another thread, I think I loved it (have to see it at least one more time before I can say anything for sure), but I also have this feeling that the sequel trilogy may be more of one story where it relies strongly on each chapter more than we have seen before? The PT and OT are a bigger story as well, but I think this new one might be at it´ s very best as a whole, perhaps? Actually a bit strange, when we know that the entire story never was mapped out when they started. ;-)

I loved it. I totally got the samuraii inspiration of the last duel, Poe really became one of the "new three" this time, Kylo Ren will finish what Vader started and the overall tone of the Movie is a bit dark which is a good thing. The end opens up for J.J Abrams in a nice way. I get that this one will be divisive for the fans, but why the hell would one play safe? TLJ is imo the best one along with ESB. And Mark Hamill deserves an Oscar.

    I gave the film 4/10

I try to see good in all sci fi films...but I would say given the hype this has to be the most disappointing film I have ever seen. But, my little boy loved it and that is what counts I suppose. I was bored to hell. I wanted it to end.

I am glad people like it but I am wary of all the good reviews that the critics are giving it. They clearly did not grow up with Star Wars. This is not a 5 star film. Far from it. So I don't understand where the critics are coming from.

In terms of the series, this is actually worse for me than the prequels. It had no story. A two and half hour film with no story. They just made it up as they went along.

I worry about the next generations of sci fi fans because this type of film is not very imaginative and no thinking is required to watch it. These types of films will turn audiences into zombies. The film quite clearly has been designed just to sell toys.

Rogue One probably destroyed the Franchise in some respects because it would have been difficult to better. But even with its dark story line, my 8 year old actually prefers Rogue one. So don't underestimate your audience Disney. They are not all braindead.

If they keep churning out the same old thing audiences will eventually switch off. This is my last Star Wars film so it is end of an era for me.

Listen.. Rian take a risk. If not in the middle of the trilogy then when and why ???! I´m so f*cking glad he did it because if it goes in the JJ way new trilogy is going to be boring as prequel are. I really like TFA but.. in some way its still the same. TLJ is full of twists, full of fighting and hard decisions.
Absolutely love it but its really impossible to make reviews or give rating after first watching. Its sooo HUUUGE !

Tonight it will be my second round.

I agree with you. It's around 4-5/10 for me. I had such high expectations for TLJ, especially because of TFA. TFA left viewers with a lot of questions unanswered, like who is Snoke, where are the knights of Ren and who are they exactly, who are Rey's parents, etc. I was hoping to get answers, good answers from TLJ. And I got nothing. Snoke killed off, knights of Ren forgotten, Rey's parents not important. I was so disapponted watching this movie, it was really boring...but then there's the elevator scene with Ben and Rey, he knows who her parents are...I'm like, yes the movie is finally saved...something important is about to happen...the answers are coming...and the next scene... Snoke dies, he simply fu**ing dies. Just like that. What the hell? I can't even... I did not like Luke in the movie, I did not like Rey, I did not like Kylo Ren. They all were handled very poorly. My favorite character in the movie is Poe. POE fu**ing DAMERON. I don't what else to say...Oh, yeah, the force ghost puppet looked like sh*t.
