First of all, I left the cinema utterly speechless…

I haven’t been so surprised by a star wars movie (in a good or bad way) since I was a boy and found out Darth Vader was Luke’s father. It just took me a lot of time to process everything.

For more than once Ryan Johnson made my jaw drop to the floor.

There were things I absolutely loved, and others I’m having a hard time processing. For instance: Luke throwing his saber behind is back… for me it’s more the way he did it and not what he did… I guess Ryan tried to make us laugh about it, for me personally it made me cringe. If Luke had just let the saber drop from his hand, it would have more impact and meaning, but something about the way he tossed it made me think it was some kind of parody.

The second scene that felt awkward to me was floating Leia. I guess it’s more about the way it was filmed. I understand Ryan showing us Leia being more powerful than we ever saw her being on film, but the scene just felt really awkward for me, I can’t explain it other way. I really thought that was it for Leia, that she was gone (and I was strangely ok with it) but that comeback… it was weird.

The third thing I really didn’t like: Snoke and Phasma, I didn’t have the time to “hate” them enough. I wished they have grown more as characters and have got to know more about them

Things I loved: pretty much the rest of the movie… Loved Rose Tico, Hux, loved the humor, loved Poe’s arch, Finn’s arch (he almost dying made me realize how much I loved his character), loved DJ, and Admiral Holdo… Even Canto Bight, before the movie I thought that was going to be boring and I loved it. Also the Rey and Kylo’s arch… interesting is not enough… For me, the way Ryan did it felt new and fresh.

Many scenes stood out to me: Admiral Holdo jumping into light speed, and the silence and image afterwards, and Luke “fighting “ Kylo… Yoda and Luke… and most of all, Luke's departure. Those images will be stuck in my mind for a very long time.

Things I found lacking: We won’t have another chance to see Luke kicking Stormtroopers, or Knights of Ren, ass. Despite the fact that I loved Luke vs Kylo, it didn’t felt enough… 30 seconds like Darth Vader in Rogue 1 and I would have been truly happy. And maybe I would forget that there is no big full out war in the end of the movie like I was hoping (but for me that's just a detail in the overall). But that’s what you get when you have your own expectations.

Conclusion: It’s a very different film from previous Star Wars films, some are going to love it, and some are going to hate it. I liked it, I really liked it despite the flaws in it for me… but it’s not superb, and it could have been…

I can safely say that, now having seen this movie twice, the responses I read on this forum are no where alligned with how the audience responds throughout the movie and after. So much negativity here, whereas viewers and critics are raving and literally applauding this movie. Also so many new faces here, only here to crap on the movie, disappointed that their voices are not reflected by audience and critical response.

    95% Rotten Tomatoes
    8.6. Metacritic

    Enough said.

Its left pretty open ended + they'll probably do a time jump which leaves a LOT of room to hopefully do something amazing.

Personally, Kylo and possibly the KOR (which i hope to see in 9) is a great villian. With the time jump i suspect that we'll really see Supreme Leader Ren in his element and taking full control
And man, you would be hard pressed to find anyone (including people who hate the movie) that say there aren't new loveable characters, i mean cmon.

In terms of building new ships, they'll get Euron Greyjoy and the iron islands on board to help out

Yeah, it was a work of genius. And I don't say that lightly.
A lot of people, for some reason, want remakes.
I didn't enjoy TFA. I was bored by it.
TLJ was captivating throughout on the grounds alone that it was fresh....and then some!

I think will get a lot of newcomers (like me) joining the forum and voicing their despair with this film. It will be a kind of therapy having waited 2 years to watch it and then being very disappointed. .

You make a good point that the critics love the film which I have to say is the most troubling for me. If the film had got a slating then I would never have joined the forum. I would have quietly agreed and accepted Disney cocked up.

I live and breathe sci fi. I actually quite like the prequels and the TFA was not so bad. Rogue one was superb.

This was a jumbled mess. I am so disappointed. It was dire.

The next film could rescue the series (I hope so) but they have their work cut out. But, you will still have this film in between TFA and whatever they do next.

As a hardcore fan, this film was a disgrace for me. There is no way I will buy this on Blue ray.....and I have all the rest. Star Wars died yesterday when I saw the film.

But, I am truly happy that people like it. I can't understand for the life of me why, but maybe I am just getting old.

I do understand where you're coming from and I too enjoyed this movie even though in some aspects it left me with more questions than answers. As for your Metacritic and RT scores they will go down in the future, they always do once the casuals even out the ratings of the more fanatic fans that usually upvote movies in the first view days. I'm not saying that the ratings will drastically drop in the future I am just saying that we should give TLJ more time before we can safely agree what the overall oppinion on this movie is.

Personally I think TLJ is a fantastic movie but a bad sequel. It has the epicness and feel of a finale but isn't a finale. It fails to directly connect to TFA which left me kind of lost at parts. One example would be the Knights of Ren. The forceback in TFA does not connect with any scene related to the destruction of Luke's Jedi academy in TLJ at all. There are quite a few examples of this throughout the movie. 9/10 movie, 5/10 sequel, that's how I feel about TLJ. Lets hope IX and JJ finishing his vision will put TLJ more into context with the saga as a whole.

I've though about the same concerning the Knights of Ren... but maybe it's something that will happen in episode IX and not something Rey saw from the past.

So I saw it yesterday and I will see it again in 3 hours. Right now I say this - it's a GREAT movie. Quality of ESB. Extremely bold move, I can't emphasize enough how different this movie is, it doesn't really even have 3 acts, as in most media. I'm glad I avoided spoilers, because it would ruin my experience, it's one thing to write all those twists and turns and behaviors (Luke...) on paper, it's completely different to see it with your own eyes in a way the director meant to be seen.
I do understand, why many will not like it - mostly because will go with certain expectations and I assure you, almost no one could predict what will happen. So they set themselves for disappointment.
What I can't understand is how anyone could say that Kylo and especially Rey characters are ruined, that they end where they started. I guess Ren falling completely to the Dark Side, killing his past and wanting nothing else than to just destroy everything is the same. Just as Rey who finally embraces that she came from nowhere but it doesn't matter, that no matter how hard you try, some people can't be helped... I could go on. I love how these two are portrayed. Them and Luke, who almost stole a show. Or maybe he did? I need to see it again, I guess.

As I said, it's amazing, for now, for me it's 9-9.5/10. I wasn't prepared for this experience and was blown away. And from the reactions from the audience, I think most loved it too.

EDIT Oh I forgot to add something about Snoke. His death was perfect. It was this hubris Luke spoke about in TLJ - he thought he was narrating the death of Rey. So full of himself, he didn't even realize, it was his death. And just like that, apprentice killed his master.

Yeah, JJ came up with the Knights of Ren, I would be surprised if he doesn't make them come into play.

I've heard people laughing in scenes not meant to be comic.
See leia flauting and Luke almost killing Ben.

And a lot of people leaving the theater watching the floor.
I see a lot of jokes on Facebook and social media.
A lot of people are simply laughing at TLJ, here.

I think we are going to have a better idea on the response in the next days.
The first days are the days "nerds" like us go to theaters.

I don't really know how the genaral audience may react.

Maybe they'll love it. But it could be a disaster.

I think it was the right movie to make, it opened new doors for the SW saga, it left a different taste in my mouth than TFA or the OT but it was still a Star Wars film. A lot of things happened how I expected them to, so maybe the bitter reviews come from people who built up something else in their heads. I can't wait to see it again in a few days.

Are people getting paid for writing positive reactions here? 9-9.5/10? Have people become crazy overnight? Or maybe I've been accidentally shown a different version of the movie? Some people even compare it to TESB, that's just beyond my understanding.

Everyone has their own opinions. For my part I liked this movie and I'm looking forward to watching it again tomorrow to make my final verdict.

That's probably it. You need to be open minded to enjoy this movie.

Different lives breed different people. The subjectivity in our understanding and enjoyment of various forms of media, such as film, is what makes it so much more interesting to talk about. Can you imagine if everyone hated or loved the same movie?

I’m going to take a stab and guess that you weren’t a big fan of the film. As someone who’s still figuring things out (a second viewing should help me), I’d genuinely be really interested to hear your opinion/s as to why it’s not as good as, say, TESB, or why you feel the way that you do?

I hope Kekstarter replies to your question. I would be interested to know as well....largely because I share his/her opinions.

In the meantime, when I left the cinema yesterday with my 8 year old son after watching TLJ I asked him what is now your favorite Star wars film ?. He said TESB. Tis true that.

Forget 'Star Wars' for a minute....TLJ was a tacky, badly written hollywood/disney/money making merchandising nonsense.

Please don't fall for it. It was not a film.

On the surface, most people who don't like the movie may just seem like offended OT-fanboys who see this as sacrilege, but I assure you, it goes deeper. For me, this movie is just nihilistic and contains a lot of unwarranted moral relativism. War being portrayed as universally bad, because there are no real good guys. The archetypal hero who would rather fester on Island. If he wanted to die so much, why didn't he at least try to fight and die like a man. Ok I get it, what RJ wants to say - Luke went over his ego, or anyone's ego really, and helped in a practical, yet not really heroic way. That he just died as a result of exhaustion is just unsatisfying. If they wanted to promote stoicism and letting go, they could have done it with the real Luke fighting on Crait just the same.
The same happens again when Rose saves Finn from self-sacrifice. I didn't like this. It's basically pacifism - don't fight for the FO, don't sacrifice yourself for the Resistance either. But then Holdo does exactly that, because, it seems, they needed to get rid of her. Because "there is greatness in doing something that you dislike" from a moral perspective. The plot just looks inconclusive, unsatisfying, uninspiring and new-agey. It takes the primordial feelings that the OT created and negates them in a big way.
The message of this movie was: do whatever you feel like doing in the moment, don't fulfill anyone's expectations, because you are meaningless in the big game. Way to go, Rian Johnson.

On another more positive note, a lot of my disliking this movie would subside, if they didn't really kill off Snoke.
