I am really surprised that in 6 pages no one has brought up the deliberate misdirection of the JJ Mystery Box.

Of course this is the Supreme Leader. Gleeson is rumored to be the "Tarkin" or "Mothma" of the movie.

 

I said twice in my post I wasn't saying he was Plagueis. I was talking about people thinking they don't need to see the movie to confirm anything.
Telling the movie won't have twists is risky. Isn't a twist finding out Ben is Obi in ANH? Or Padme being Amidala in TPM? Both were beginnings of trilogies.
And I disagree the "palpatine type" character is a minor character.

Well, to be honest, that was like, for everyone over eight-years-old: "so we know Natalie Portman is playing this character, why have they given her two names... kind of...? oh, it's supposed to be A SURPRISE. Yay, the surprise plot twist. Yay. You got me..."

 

I can't be arsed to read 7 pages. Supreme leader of what? First order or Resistance?

 

Or the Republic there are three factions.

 

Why is there not a 'logical' for this?

 

It amazes me.
JW is obviously a ****. He has proved that here and elsewhere time and time again.
I don't know why people can't disassociate him being a **** with him actually having some info about this movie. Which he has also proven time and time again.

 

As a supporter for a British republic it shames me that I missed that option!

 

No offense but I don't think you actually know what this filmmaker terminology means. These are technical terms used to describe specific things.

Neither of those examples are huge plot twists that cause the viewer to rethink everything that happened on screen. They are minor revelations at best, and as for Obi-Wan, Ben is just a nickname he's adopted over time, there's no mind blowing revelation there. You literally hear Luke talking about this guy and then being in the guy's house 10 minutes of screen time later.

It's very straight forward story. There's no shocking twist.

And as for Padme, that's a horrible example as it's literally only a surprise to our dull witted characters. Everyone going into the film already knew this.

So ya, expecting any kind of major plot twist involved in an origin story is expecting something you're not likely to get.

As for the second part you can disagree if you want but this is not a matter of opinion. These terms have specific meaning and connotation.

Palpatine himself was a supporting character in all of the films except ROTS where he wasn't the man behind the curtain anymore.

This isn't a question of a characters in-universe importance, it's about actual screen time. From what we've heard from the actor playing him, this character is only in a few scenes, hence it's a supporting role.

So yes unless they're going out of their way to overly explain this character's back story through dialogue in scenes not even including him, it's a huge stretch to even think there's a major surprise twist to the plot of this film involving his identity, and that's just simply the logic of having limited screen time.

And also taking pure speculation for what it is. Could this happen? Sure. Is it likely to occur? No it's not and we have no reason to think so.

 

I can totally see a name like "Snoke" in a western or GOT. Great post.

I was looking up the word snoke and it is a variant of Snook which can mean many things. Especially just a surname

 

Palpatine version 2.0 then... disappointing.

What forces that judgement. I mean we not heard that this guy is a master manipulator. The supreme leader title suggests a different take than an emperor.
