    Is there any particualr reason why there's a change from J.J. Abrams to Rian Johnson? Is it typical to switch between directors with movies set so close to each other?

    the only reason to do such a thing.. is to give everyone involved a headache.

    If they were always planning on ep8 continuing straight off from ep7, then they should have used 1 director and filmed the whole lot in one go in my opinion.

    that said - given the choice of JJ doing both, or RJ taking over for ep8... i'd switch to RJ every day of the week and twice on tuesday.

    Disagree.
    Part of the problem with the prequels was their sameness. They felt very monotone and things were lacking because it was just one voice from start to finish.
    Taking breaks and bringing in different directors allows for more depth and variety to find it's way in.

    JJ did a good job mimicking the early George Lucas style in TFA. Now it's Rian's turn to bring in something new. And then it will be Colin's.

    Same reason Marvel tends to move around directors. Keeps the films feeling fresh and different despite being in the same world. Same thing here.

    I don't really know if I want 3 RJ Star Wars films.

    And filming all at once works for Lord of the Rings because it's a tighter story. There were no spinoffs and they weren't seeking to expand with new lore, just tell one tight story.

    we don't really have differing opinions to be honest... my comments were only really based on the logistical side of doing such a thing. I'm a programmer, and i'd never write half a piece of software and hand it over to someone and say.."go finish that".

    I love RJ's previous films (particularly Looper) and i'm really excited about what he'll do with ep8, so i'm personally happy with the switch.

    I'd actually like Christopher Nolan or Ridley Scott to have a go at a Star Wars film at some point.

    more depth and variety is definitely good @RoyleRancor, but my 'keep things simple' brain doesn't like decisions like that lol

    They did so, because every film in the original trilogy was directed by a different person, but the last two were produced by the person who directed the first one: Lucas. Now Abrams did the first and produces 8 and 9.

    Ugh if I run into anyone in RL that starts the 'Oh VIII is going to be a ESB rehash" I am going to have to tap into everything thing I have to not choke them out. I am glad he talked some crap about it. I like that he is being a smart a__ right back. It gives me even more confidence in him.
