I’m a bot too. George Lucas killed my childhood with the prequels.

Another day, and no backlash building.....

Meanwhile, a new poll of my family shows 100% of us don't give a crap about TLJ polls.....

The first words of the opening crawl for The Force Awakens are, "Luke Skywalker is missing."
Han says, "People that knew him best, think he went looking for the first Jedi Temple."
You can infer he left to look for the temple to hide. But in Episode 7 no one knew for sure why Luke disappeared.

Han Solo: This map's not complete. It's just a piece. Ever since Luke disappeared, people have been looking for him.
    Rey: Why did he leave?
Han Solo: He was training a new generation of Jedi. One boy, an apprentice, turned against him, destroyed it all. Luke felt responsible. He just walked away from everything.
Finn: Do you know what happened to him?
Han Solo: A lot of rumors. Stories. People that knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple.

Even if there was a true backlash, I wouldn't change my mind over liking the movie.

Nobody would want you too. I’m just talking about the public in general. Obviously there is no right or wrong as to if the film is good or not.

    Well, that's good.
Not you, but there's been sites I've been on where I've commented on how I liked certain movies, and it upset many who told me I was not a "true fan" for liking them.

The backlash is right-wing, in all likelihood. People like Worldclassbullshitters, David Stewart, SC Reviews and Ben Shapiro are plausibly all part of the same right-wing movement

The Last Jedi is proactively left-wing, and I'm 100% grateful that that's how Disney has decided to treat the material

Are you laughing now about the 77% decline? There is clearly a backlash whether you choose to admit it or not.

So all republicans hate the movie? It is a movie for democrats? Proactively left wing? I don't see political affiliations playing into whether you like a star wars movie or not. I would be proof of that I guess

I think you're drawing the wrong conclusion from the data.

When the "Star Wars" name is attached to a movie there are certain expectations from Star Wars fans that the general public doesn't share. The backlash is coming from hardcore Star Wars fans, not the public at large.

Seriously, why would John Q. Public care if the movie is part of a larger canon? It's only Star Wars fans signing the petition because they're the only ones disappointed that this movie didn't meet their expectations.

I'd also argue that the most of the negative ratings on Rotten Tomatoes aren't from the general public, they're from the same Star Wars fans. A vocal minority with enough anger can vote disproportional to their numbers (See Trump, Donald J.).

Finally, a drop in attendance on Tuesday? If you want to cherry pick the data points that make you feel good about not liking the movie I can't stop you. But none of us know how well this movie will do financially. We won't know for another month. For a critic to say the general public doesn't like this movie based on a one day measurement of attendance tells us more about the critic than the general public.

I would agree. For me, until the ENTIRE general public votes then a rating cannot speak for the general public. Many, including myself, could care less about logging onto a website and voting. For me the RT audience rating isn't much to pay attention to simply because it is only accounting for those who care to vote. Currently, RT has approx. 146K votes. To me , This is a verrrrry small sampling of the fan base and audience who have seen the movie.

It's really great then that you don't work in marketing. By your standards the ENTIRE general public would have to vote to let Apple know if people like their new iPhone design. Completely absurd.

It's called sample size - how did Apple know that X% of people would like their new design, give or take some margin for error.. because they polled Y amount of people and inferred from there.

146k is quite a large sample size if you ask me.

146K is quite a large sample of the general audience and the millions of fans worldwide? I wouldn't consider so.

Really, you don't know where I work. Sample size has to be indicative of the market to be a good judgement. A sample is just a sample. It still doesn't speak for everyone. It can be used as a good business judgement in the direction of marketing but still can be wrong. Plus given, that each IPhone is slightly different from the previous doesn't take much marketing to know people will buy the new phone. A company explicitly polling for marketing value and a voluntary poll gives to different values.

The backlash is plausibly political, because it makes sense for it to be: the original trilogy focused on white people, the sequel trilogy gives voice to many non-white characters. Plus, many YouTubers are anti-feminist

That has nothing to do with politics, whether the character is white or "non-white", or rather one of the main characters is a female. You would be talking about gender discrimination and racism. I think making it about political views is a weak argument. But, I don't look for movie reviews from politically charged figures.

So why are black people the lowest to turn out for this movie?

Not buying it, explain the critical and audience successes of TFA and RO and you’ve got a point. It’s just bad storytelling that’s lead to it being so badly received.
