You mean to tell me that the first Star Wars movie in a year isn't doing as good as the first Star Wars movie in 10 years?

Interesting point regarding the sad ending and the suggestion in this thread that people won't re-watch as much because of it. I really do hope the divided reaction of fans does not make Lucasfilm just play it safe going forward. That will get very dull after a while. It's the very thing that has turned me off many other franchises.

I always hated the aspect of Hollywood film studios where they would put pressure on directors to change their original ending to a more upbeat one. Is this an American thing? In the UK we are used to downbeat endings, "we seem to be made to suffer, it's our lot in life' :)

I'm pretty sure TLJ is doing fine when out comes to $$$. As for your rant, you barely have anything to back yourself up. Why was it bad? Because you spent the last two years of your life diving into theories that didn't come true? TLJ is a great movie and a great Star Wars movie. Yes Snoke died even without being explained, but maybe that was the point. Watch the movie again, this time a little more aware of what is happening and not on what you wanted it to be.

I think as more and more people are starting to see this film word is getting out that it’s not very good or at least not what people wanted to see. The weekday declines compared to TFA are alarming

Thats your opinion otherwise the movie wouldn't be as divisive as it is.

A satirical deconstruction (among many other issues I took with the film) of Star Wars isn't what people like myself signed up for with Star Wars - The Force Awakens wasn't that, Rogue One wasn't that, Star Wars Rebels isn't that. TLJ make a ton of money anyway. I was bearish in my own box office guess compared to most people. I didn't really take into account the movie being divisive or not though.

According to cinemascore, the majority of fans liked the movie. That is why it has an A. Yes it is my opinion that TLJ is a good movie, but the reason I argue my case so heavily is so that people can see what a good movie it was and not diss any new take on star wars whether it's bad or good. The Last Jedi was both original (something fans complained about in TFA) and had callbacks and techniques similar to that of the original trilogy (something fans complained about for the prequels). The majority of negative reviews I see simply state all the things that made it different from the original trilogy (Luke) or how their theories were not satisfied (Rey's parents or Snoke).

Lots of movies gets a great cinemascore - they poll opening night where the hardest of the hardcore turn out. Age of Ultron and The Dark Knight Rises did too, as well as some Madea movies and Transformers and Twilight. People grade on a curve and way too much is a A-tier or B-tier.

And TPM has a A- score so what ?

    Its still divisive as hell.

Makes you wonder why billion dollar studios pay big money for surveys.

The Last Jedi is doing fine at the box office:

OK I would say everyone that is mocking TLJ numbers also has TESB as their #1 favorite movie in the saga. Well according to these numbers, it could only muster about 65% of Episode 4s boxoffice take (plus or minus whatever 3 years inflation from 77 would subtract). And i'm sure crowds were not jumping and pumping their fists in the air like they did in 1977 basically due to the darker tone of the film. Over the next two weeks this movie will continue to make a ton of money.

    Compare for yourself

The divisiveness isn't doing it any favors, but there are other factors that play a part. Most obviously, and as already mentioned, The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars movie in 10 years and was the reintroduction back into that universe, Star Wars is familiar again, it was bound to take a hit at the box office.

Next, although only a difference of three days, The Force Awakens opening on December 18th is much different than The Last Jedi opening on December 15th. One week until Christmas versus ten days until is pretty huge. Once the opening weekend hype for The Force Awakens was over people were starting to be let out of school/work so it never really experienced a downturn. Once The Last Jedi opening weekend was over, people had to go back to school and work for an entire week due to Christmas falling on a Monday this year instead of a Friday when The Force Awakens came out, that makes a difference. I'm interested to see what it takes in next weekend, that'll be more telling than what it takes in the Tuesday before Christmas.

frankly this is just an over exaggeration, the low income is not an anomaly, in fact both The Force Awakens and Rogue One decreased on their first Tuesday.
Looking at it quick, it looks like normally, the first Tuesday shows a slight increase, but huge, $500+ Domestic type movies (Star Wars, Jurassic World, the Avengers, Dark Knight) usually show a slight decrease.

It's a pretty minor difference. But maybe there's just lots of people who see Monday as their first chance to see a blockbuster without huge crowds.

Yeah, right off the gate, people like TPM because of the hype building up around it. The argument that the majority or at least a large portion of fans hated it was wrong. The cinemascore was used to show that. Of course it's there right to hate it, but they might not have any good reasons to hate it. I'm justarguing so that people can appreciate a good star wars movie.

    1. TLJ is falling behind previous episodes in $$$. False. It has currently made $510M+ worldwide. Second highest weekend opening ever - ALL movies, not just SW!!

    2. Rian hosed it. Your opinion but #1 above is problematic for your argument.

    3. Fans choosing to not be let down multiple times. Your opinion. I am not lumped in your group there. I was not "let down"

    4. I have no intention to see it again. OK

    5. I think I have seen all the rest at least 7 times in my 50 years. If you are talking theater, that is more than in my 53 years. I plan on seeing TLJ multiple times.

    6. Movie left us sad, disturbed and not looking forward. Movie left me positive, excited and looking forward. So don't lump me in "us".

    7. Why Disney think they have to kill off ever old character and destroy who they were? News flash. People die. Harrison Ford wanted Han to die in the OT. I do not agree with the theory that Disney "destroyed" Luke if that is what you are insinuating.
