Personally, I think this can only be a good thing. I LOVED the marketing for TFA, but in the end it did turn out that they showed way too much (especially with those TV spots...of which I only saw the same one 1000 times actually on TV but all the others through YT ads) and it meant that many of us had pieced together the skeleton of the story before we walked into the theatre.

I also think it's great because they could have very easily dropped a trailer earlier "just because", but instead it seems like they are respecting the vision that they have for this film by holding back on giving anything story related (such as a synopsis and the final trailer) until some 6 - 8 weeks before the film's release, which takes a lot of guts considering that this franchise is very easily Disney's most valuable and, I think, any other distributor would have blown their metaphorical load of hype by now, and let's not forget that this is new for Disney too: they're absolutely used to having at least two trailers out by this point (plus some very different international ones) for their potential blockbusters.

So, whilst I understand why many feel like they're not as hyped for TLJ as they were for TFA, we simply haven't seen as much at this point, which could pay off in dividends if the next trailer is anything like the second and third trailers for TFA.

Looks like the Avengers Infinity War teaser spot drops Friday September 29.

Already figured that TLJ won't drop until October 16. So just pointing out they will be over two weeks apart.

There's one more trailer that will probably come out before the one for Episode VIII - Thor: Ragnarok.

This is very interesting if true, and absolutely makes sense: you don't want that teaser to drop after TLJ's at a risk of overshadowing the film to more casual moviegoers.

It'll be interesting to see when the Black Panther trailer drops now; whilst I don't think it will overshadow TLJ's if dropped after, it would potentially missing screening in front of Thor: Ragnarok if TLJ's trailer does indeed mid-October as the majority expects, as it typically takes two weeks between a film trailer dropping online and it making it into theatres.

Are we sure that's getting another trailer, outside of TV spots?
I thought the final one already aired?

If they're planning to drop one, it's coming before the 29th, (if that's when we're getting the IW trailer) that's for sure.

Back on topic though: if this is the case [that the IW teaser drops the 29th], I think we can more or less rule out a TLJ trailer dropping this month.

The September 29th release date for Avengers 3 is just a rumor at this point.

Also, the Thor 3 teaser and TLJ teaser dropped in the same week. A two week gap between trailer releases isn't really a thing.

Even if the 9/29 date is true, that doesn't preclude TLJ dropping a full trailer in the next 5-7 days before or after 9/29.

Rogue One released it's October trailer on GMA, and they released a second teaser in August during the Olympics.

    TFA got two teasers.

The marketing campaigns for the three movies are very different.

October 16th is just one possible date for the release of the TLJ trailer.

I don't know what the point of the tweet on Saturday was if nothing is coming soon. Just kind of weird if the movie is three months away and a trailer is a month away.

We got the Force Awakens "Finn ignites lightsaber, Rey looks up at FO ships" tease on August 27, 2015.

And the trailer still didn't come out until October.

I'm sticking with the 16th, though if those Reddit "leakers" are legit, it will be the 30th of October. Don't take them too seriously though.

To be completely fair, I did qualify my statements with "ifs" :p

As for the Ragnarok and TLJ teaser trailers dropping the same week, I think it's worth pointing out first and foremost that the Ragnarok teaser was absolutely timed to be in theatres and shown in front of GOTG2: it was released just under two weeks before international release. I think it's also worth noting the order in which they came: the film with less box office potential coming first, and the film with more box office potential following. Whilst I think TLJ will do great at the box office, I think Disney and all of us can agree that Infinity War has the potential to perform just as well as, if not better than, TLJ at the box office. There is absolutely no point dropping these trailers so close that cannibalisation is a possibility: what reason is there to not spread them out by a few weeks?

Whilst I think it's great that you mentioned that both Ragnarok and TLJ had their teaser trailers released within the same week, teaser trailers are traditionally only to give a glimpse of what the film has to offer, and whilst it might hype up fans and critics alike, in all honesty, there is nothing riding on these trailers except our initial impressions.

However, in the case of Ragnarok, TLJ and IW? You have tens of millions of dollars of opening weekend box office potential to tap into for the first two with a great trailer, whilst the latter is expected to give us a great first impression, especially with the knowledge that there are some out there who have already seen a great trailer for the film. There's a lot riding on how well these teasers/trailers go, so let's not treat it like Disney could throw them out all on the same day and expect optimal - which, honestly, I believe is the most important word to remember here - results.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here @Lobot : the marketing campaigns are different, for sure, but every film is taken to on a film-by-film basis when it comes to this aspect, and I have supported this before when I've said and stuck to my DL-44s about there being only two trailers for this film in the event that we got the BTS reel at D23 because of how TFA's and RO's campaigns were structured (the former had a second teaser in April at Celebration, followed by a six month break until the final trailer in October; the latter had a behind-closed-doors trailer at SWCE in July and the trailer was dropped the following month not too long after what would have been that year's D23 window, if it were to have - in my eyes being a negligible difference, meaning that they might as well have released it - the next TLJ trailer - at D23 if they were just waiting until August). As I've said before, TFA teed up this film perfectly in that it ended on a literal cliffhanger, begging for the audience to return in two years' time to see how the saga continues, and this was ingenious marketing in and of itself.

I agree that it's just one possible date, but virtually the only consistencies between TFA's and RO's marketing campaigns were trailers releasing in April and October, with both dropping in the latter month around the same time (the 19th and 13th if I'm recalling correctly). It's arguably the most likely date, but of course, there's no reason it can't drop any earlier or later.

A tweet misread could have been, hmm?

Personally, I think it says something that there is no unified viewpoint on the tweet.

You know, in replying to Lobot, the thought did cross my mind that late October, strangely enough, could be a possibility.

    Why?

I'm not too sure. Perhaps I've been handed some dodgy blue milk, but I suppose it could be argued that Thor: Ragnarok is in need of a well-timed Black Panther trailer more than it is a trailer which everyone will, without a doubt, have already see hundreds of times. That would leave, what, Coco as a Disney film to attach it to (which I believe was roughly mid-to-late November in the US, lining up pretty well with conversion timings and theatrical implementation)?

It would pretty much have the whole of November to itself in terms of advertising if a trailer was released that late, as a Black Panther trailer could then come mid-October?

I suppose it's an interesting thought to ponder. Meditate on this, I will :p

Just to note- I'm sure many of you know already, but while Star Wars does great in the US, it performs less favorably overseas. Part of this is due to censorship of the rebellious themes, but I think this video covers another aspect well: lack of nostalgia for them.

Think it's worth saying that this is one of the reasons why it doesn't go down well in China, not to mention the censorship/removal of ghosts/spirits too over there.

China is a huge fish for it to catch, and you can really tell by the casting with TLJ and RO that Disney/LFL are attempting to resolve this by incorporating some stars and lesser known Asian actors: whilst I don't agree that it should be done for the sake of making more money - whilst this is of course all about the bottom line to most companies at the end of day, it feels ethically grey, at least to myself - I think it's great that it's happening simply because it can aid in empathising with characters and seeing yourself in others, and making new fans (which is always a great thing in my eyes).

@Lobot I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree.

So, when exactly were you predicting for it to drop? By the end of the month so that it could play before Blade Runner 2049?

I feel a friendly bet coming along...

Yeah, I think we get it by next Monday or so. I'm at an event for work tonight, but I was going to follow up on your response in the AM.

I find this debate quite interesting to be honest.

We definitely see the same details in fundamentally different ways.

And I was going to propose some sort of wager in the Cantina, but paying the bills must come before fun side bets.

Despite the debate, I think it goes without saying that I'd love for you to be right about it arriving by next Monday :p I think we can all agree that it feels like we've been waiting a little bit too long for this next trailer.

Likewise, and I absolutely respect your opinions and can see where you're coming from with a lot of it, but there is that fundamental difference for sure.

At the end of the day, whether that tweet from the other day was referring to the next trailer or to the film, I think it's small things like that which has kept this conversation going on for months now, which I'm all for.

Honestly, I expected things to quieten down a bit in this period of what I'd call a drought of any significant news regarding TLJ and pick back up towards late September/early October, but I'm glad everyone's been on here to talk SW.

Keeps me sane whilst LFL hold the trailer captive.

I wouldn't feel good taking everyone's money anyway.

    /thread ;)

Part of me still think he could be toying with our emotions - I think the past shows that you can never fully trust Mark when it comes to stuff like this :p - this date seems absolutely fair and reasonable, so I see no reason why not.

Roll on the 9th I guess!

Oh dear, wait, I live in the UK...roll on the early morning of the 10th I suppose?
