JJ has said on a number of occasions (including the Director's Commentary) that the Forceback went through many incarnations. If Maryann Brandon says the first version was flashbacks of the OT, it probably was, and it was probably abandoned long before shooting began.

I do seem to remember a time when MSW thought the Forceback was supposed to show the path the lightsaber took to reach Rey, and that could have included a lot of OT stuff - so you could argue that the early rumors jived with what she says.

She was likely trying to give some general information about the film. The Forceback may had been conceptualized as summarizing the OT but when it came time to shoot the film it was layed out in such a manner that it appeared to show the path of the lightsaber. In editing it was changed even more. So while what she saying was true at one time, it seems to me that when it got to the point to actually make the movie that concept was long gone. In the end it is not important and I'm just being ornery.

I've mentioned this in other films, but I wouldn't hate for some OT3 reunion footage in the Han Solo flick. I think it might help connect that film to the overall series, and I don't think EP8 is necessarily going to need that help as badly.

It would be absolutely heartbreaking for us to get a "flash forward" at the end of the Solo film, seeing Han, Luke, and Leia together.

    Thanks @jmjawors!

I am trying to recall what from the shooting schedule leaked by MSW did not make it into the film... I recall: the hand floating through space; the saber being picked up, igniting the field on fire, and being stolen; the boy in the hallway being perhaps "seduced"; the new perspective on Luke's lightsaber battle with Vader on Bespin... Is there anything I am missing?!?

Most of this certainly supports the idea of the Forceback showing a short synopsis of the OT, or the path of the saber to get to Rey. It could also help explain Ben Solo's fall to Snoke and the dark, which is also one of the great mysteries post-ROTJ, along with what happened among Luke, Leia, and Han Solo and how we find them in TFA.

I sincerely hope there was some additional footage left on the cutting room floor for TFA (and that will be used in VIII) that helps to answer not only these questions, but the other great mystery of Rey's origin.

In terms of unused footage from TFA, I'm wondering if that Knights of Ren scene could possibly be expanded in VIII to just show them amoungst the rocks of Ahch-to?

Everyone assumes it's bodies all around them, but is there anything definitive on that? Whenever I've stared at screen-stills (admitted for too long!) I've never been 100% sure - the assumption is just there from Han's "destroyed it all" line.

It would be quite a funny knock to our assumptions (since seeing TFA) if there was a reveal of no "massacre" but simply silhouetted rocks against the lightening flashes!

Never coming back doesn't exclusively mean dead. Luke could have just gone to get some deathsticks, and never came back ;).

Probably fighter pilot imagery (Tie-Fighter and X-Wing cockpit footage), some Stardestroyer bridge/interior footage and probably some shots from Skellig Michael.

I guess our so long wished Luke, Han and Leia reunion scene, as part of a flashback and Han&Leia bringing young Kylo to Luke. ;)

I could be totally wrong, but I swear I remember a rumor floating around about a Luke, Han, and Leia "flashback" just before TFA was released. Now, more than ever (with Carrie's passing) I'd really want to see this scene if it was shot.

Agreed. It would be a shame if the opportunity were missed completely.

Actually, wasn't the rumor of a standoff between Luke and Han over an injured Kylo Ren? Luke wanting to kill him, but Han Solo protecting him? With Luke actually the one who killed Han Solo, either intentionally or accidentally?

Maybe that rumor conflated two different scenes with these characters... one scene left on the cutting room floor with Han Solo handing off young Ben Solo to Master Luke for training and the one scene that made it into the film with Kylo Ren killing Han Solo...

It was mentioned as one of the shots in the list leaked by MillenniumFalcon.com.

The thing about the Forceback sequence is that it was edited down to a ridiculous level (which still works, because it effectively demonstrates that Rey is overwhelmed by the Force). It was originally going to be a clear bit of exposition showing how the lightsaber ended up in Maz's hands and how Ben Solo became Kylo Ren. The flashback in question showed Han, Leia, and Ben meeting Luke so he could take his nephew as an apprentice, with this moment explicitly being the last time Han and Leia saw their son before the events of the Sequel Trilogy.

I have suspected that this scene was actually filmed and was the reason why Mark Hamill didn't completely shave until the time when production had officially wrapped. Harrison Ford's injury threw the process of filming for a loop, so it's likely that the scene would have been filmed after the production hiatus - presuming it was even filmed at all.
I *think* this was a piece of concept art that @Kyle saw, or was told about. Hopefully, he sees the tag and can clear this up for you, @Dark Toilet. :)

However, I can tell you that the MF thing I was talking about above made no mention of such a scene. I think it, like the thing with Luke Skywalker waking up in a pile of sand (it gets EVERYWHERE), is one of those neat ideas that they came up with but chose not to use. It also may have been intended for use in the second draft (of the Michael Arndt version), which would have had Luke save Rey and Finn.

I apologize if this has been brought up already, and it may be far-fetched, but here goes:

Depending on Leia's character arc in Ep. VIII and how substantial it will be, and depending on whether there's enough unused footage of Leia from TFA, what if Lucasfilm were to limit Leia's screen time in Episode VIII, incorporating unused TFA footage as necessary, and then rework any "big story moments" shot for Episode VIII into Episode IX? If this were to even be doable - and again, that depends on what's available between TFA and Episode VIII, footage-wise - then it would allow Carrie Fisher, and just Carrie Fisher, to finish the sequel trilogy as Leia.

    Too unlikely and/or far out?

I believe that her character had a big speech set before the assault on Starkiller Base. That's something that, through clever enough editing, they can re-use in some fashion.
