Seems unfair to compare this series to two successful films up that had 30+ years of fan anticipation. A better comparison is The Mandalorian which has done a remarkable job at both meeting and managing expectations. They really should have been promoting this as a small story that centers on fleshing out Wanda's character.

As @Andrew Waples pointed out this was supposed to lead right into Doctor Strange 2 so that's probably what they were thinking with Pietro. Kind of a bummer in hindsight, but there's not much they could do about it.

What’s there to explain though? He was just some dude named Ralph.
Hmm, that was certainly the impression I got anyway. I don't follow social media though. Was there a whole bunch of teasing from the showrunner or something?

I always understood this to be about Wanda. I don't think they ever really made much more of it other than that shows will finally be connected to the film world.

which as always, lead to wild fan expectations that they struggled to temper when it wasn't some big giant "but it really was..." moment.
I love theorizing but this SCREAMS of Last Jedi blast all over where fans built up their own ridiculous expectations due to a few misquotes (because of course the websites that cover this are going to misquote Liz) and their own machinations

There's really nothing official that I saw that said it'd be more than that

When did they promise it was anything but? I haven't seen any actors go out of their way of saying "This has more actions/crossovers/meaningful stuff than XYZ." None of the promotional material was about that. This show promised a trippy adventure with Wanda and Vision through the eras, which it did. It later promised a story about a woman's grief (which, showing off too soon wouldn't have been productive) and it delivered there too.

Mando and WandaVision did the exact same thing. They focused all of their promo material outside of a few shots on the first half of the season and then later promo material when they got past that second half. Fan speculation isn't the fault of the show unless the show itself riles it up. Again, Mystery Boxes.

Gotta disagree here too. It's looking like the Darkhold and the children will be the main tie-in. Pietro's origins have been confirmed via Agnes' admittance, her evil reveal song showing us her controlling him, and Monica finding out his real name, real photo, and then removing the object controlling him. At this point if they want Evan Peters as Quicksilver they better start with a fresh version, not the WandaVision version.

At most some quotes that got blown way out of proportion. Combine that with leaks, the Pietro twist, and a hyper-attentive (at best) fanbase, and you've got rampant speculation.

The point was that it was a meta-trick. Modern audiences don't really fall for conventional tricks anymore, and subverting expectations just to subvert them is a great way to end up like Game of Thrones Season 8; so the MCU is going meta. They tried that with Spider-Man: Far From Home as well. It's not a bad idea, but it did lead us askew in a way. In-world, episode 8 explicitly told us why this was the case. Agnes couldn't dig up a body she couldn't access in time, and it wasn't in a prime position to use. So she used another body. And Wanda, so desparate and in her desire for love and comfort, or at least something, took it. That happens all the time in real life.
So you know you're going to use a different actor for Pietro because the real one's dead; do you
    A) Go for a completely fresh face that no one will recognize and call out your bluff immediately on? Or
    B) go for the face you know fans will recognize and will want to believe is so true that it'll throw them off the scent of your real plans for a little bit?

If you think it served just as an advertisement for another thing, then you've really missed the point of this show.

There's been a bunch of sensationalist reporting based on actors quotes about a massive (Luke Skywalker in Mando) reveal in the series. That's probably feeding the disappointment. FWIW I don't share that disappointment. The show is just okay. It doesn't deserve to get lambasted for expectations, but it's far from phenomenal as some are suggesting.

Anyway, not gonna argue with people who feel differently. It's just an opinion. There's millions of them.

The whole Luke Skywalker thing was something sites took out of context from Liz Olsen.
If you read the actual quote it's clear she's talking about Evan Peters and it's about someone being cast that hasn't been announced yet

As someone who has practically zero investment in the MCU, and has lost plenty of loved ones, I highly appreciated the respectful approach taken by this series. To deal with such severe subject matter, to interpret it through such an abstract lens, but still remain largely true to the core of the underline human condition, it’s splendid storytelling. No, it’s not some immaculately peerless epoch to the medium. It has its warts, but I believe it achieves exact what it set out to do. It entirely succeeds on its own terms. That’s all you can really ask of any story.

I was thinking the same thing, especially with the pandemic. I think this came out at the 'right time' (for lack of a better word) for a lot people.

I binged through WandaVision last night and found it pretty good. I believe the set-up & premise was awesome and the resolution a bit meh, but still I really like it. (Probably my favorite supers thing).

So, do you guys think this show was a set-up for Multiverse of Madness? And will that Multiverse be Wanda-driven in some way? Will Wanda even be a villain in that? (Doesn't seem likely as she came out pretty much a hero in the end). Cool show :)

Feige already said the show ties to Doctor Strange, so Wanda will probably show up, maybe not as an outright villain but antagonist until they kiss and make up. :p

I don't think she came out of the show as a hero, pretty much the opposite. That entire town will need therapy for years and it's not like the government could have stopped her. It was basically 'your bad, be good from now'.

Well, Olsen is cast in Multiverse of Madness, so it's a fair bet Wanda will show up :)

The original plan was for this air right before Doctor Strange 2 so yeah... obviously that would have worked a little better.

    Question and an observation

    1. When the west view anomaly was eliminated by Wanda what happened to Agatha?

    2. if U squint a little, the word “division” can be derived from “wandavision”——- divided family, divided vision, etc

Although it makes very little practical sense, I think we’re supposed to infer that the Agnes persona really will continue living on in Westview and everyone there is just going to accept it.
I still can’t hear the name of this show and not hear ‘long division’ instead. No point. Just sayin’ :D

Yes and no. The show certainly stands on its own, but that post-credit scene was definitely set up for Multiverse of Madness.

Too soon to tell, but I can definitely see that being the case.

I'm not sure that'll be the case. I think it'll be more like: Wanda needs Strange's help, and Strange goes along with it because feels like he needs to keep Wanda in-check/safe. In return for helping her, Wanda will give strange the Darkhold (which he's horrified that she's studying and provides another reason to be there). Along the way, they come to respect and understand each other a little more. Mordo hears about the Scarlet Witch and goes after her, which (heh) puts him on a collision course with Strange.

Right now Wanda is more like the Hulk than an outright bad guy. She's wild, untamed, and unchecked by pretty much everyone. She's hurt innocent people, but not always on purpose...although with so many ambiguous actions, no one but her and her closest allies can tell. Replace she/her with he/him, and you've got the Hulk.

Agatha is "stuck" in Westview alternate reality. Wanda essentially took her magic away from her. I didn't sit through the whole credits, but was there a message like "Wanda will return"?

So, did White Vision 'die'? He just flew off and that was that.
