What do you think episode 8 should do, to make this into a strong trilogy?

The Han death didn't work though, as it needed to be earned. How are we meant to buy into Han's supposed love for his son, when they've literally spent no onscreen time with each other.

i had the exact opposite reaction. i was predisposed to hate Kylo Ren before i even saw the movie, rolled my eyes in the theatre when it was revealed that he was Han's son, nearly blurted out laughing when he took his helmet off, and then...there they were on the bridge and even feeling as conflicted as i did about Ren and not knowing or understanding much of anything about him, Han's unconditional love for this lost son made the movie, really.

objectively Ren is awful. he does terrible things.
but Han's determination to save him makes me want to save him too.
now I can't not see the boy Han loved in spite of himself.

and for me that makes Han's death not merely tragic, but poignant and powerful.

Did you buy into Obi Wan and Vader's past relationship the first time you saw ANH?

Agree with many of your points for Episode VIII. Here's my take on what I'd like to see:

-Please, no more Death Stars (that was one thing I rolled eyes when I saw it in the theatre)
-Development of the main characters Rey, Finn, Kylo, Poe and Snoke. Give them some depth and challenges.
-in connection with the above point, give Ep. 8 a bit more grit. Don't make it hokey. Make us feel what the characters are feeling, build of suspense.
-strong supporting role and character arc for Luke (he's significant in continuing the story in relation to Rey and Kylo). His story can be weaved through to essentially support Rey and Kylo Ren's arc in particular as well as our knowledge of the Force. It should have impact. This is where I think a twist will come. NO Luke death, please. Too soon.
-epic battle scene with some new, innovative visual effects which could also happen during lightsaber/force ability scenes.
-victory for the First Order and what's left of the resistance
-more Phasma and Maz; new Laura Dern, Del Toro and Tran characters
-Luke and Leia reunion - there needs to be some issues resolved here for both characters; does Leia blame Luke? (don't think so). How to deal with Ben.
-yeah, the Rey parentage thing, but far more interested in what lead to Ben's turn

Not at all. The prequels and The Clone Wars are the only things that give it any emotional weight in my opinion.

    I agree.

I didn't really relate to Rey whatsoever. How could we? She was perfect. She had the perfect skillset for any situation. We are shown that she already knows the Falcon better than Han, they demonstrated she was on her way to escaping on her own when Finn showed courage to go save her, she fended off Kylo Ren and even stole Chewie's thunder embracing and consulting Leia over the loss of Han.

I love Rey, but they gave us no reason to relate to her.... we just have to feel bad for her because she was abandoned. I felt like they were trying to force us to relate or like Rey (which I do) while Poe and Finn felt much more organic to me and Finn showed actually development. Boyega always went on about how he felt he had the coolest character and he worked his butt off promoting the movie as THE star.... only because Ridley was seen as shy and not as charismatic and couldnt handle the burden the way Boyega could, which is fine.. she was green as heck.. but even up to weeks to release Boyega switched his tone and started say "Rey is the best. Shes the coolest and the character I most relate to" and it was BS tbh.. He was told to hype her up.

SO I think they just need to work on Rey's story.. cause what more is there for Rey? Shes perfect. I guess finishing her training and getting a Jedi title to make it all formal.. but i feel like she has no growth. I want more development from our main lead.

She does get easily captured by Kylo Ren near Maz's Castle, so I wouldn't say she's perfect. Luke and Anakin never get captured in ANH & TPM. Heck, they both save the day by blowing up the Death Star and The Droid Ship.

Obviously there will be more character development and more questions answered about her in Episode 8, so I think things will be alot clearer about her in 2017. TFA had alot on its plate in that it had to introduce all new characters and re-introduce all of the OT characters in 2 hours time. So JJ did the smart thing and glossed over everyone but told a story that setup everything for Episode 8. Episode 8 will start right where it left off, so there is no need for introductions (unlike Episode 2 where you had a new character in Anakin 10 years later). Episode 8 will be like ESB where you have will have 2 hours of red meat with no beginning or ending needed because its the middle of the trilogy.

she's also lousy at teamwork and her first foray into channeling the Force to fight ends up taking her right into the Dark. good job, Rey.
she's not only far from perfect, but she's perfectly placed to really struggle in the next episode.

And if it wasn't for Finn, she would be still sitting on Jakku, wasting her life (or, as she would call it- waiting for her family to return). She even refused to help BB-8 finding his master, though deep down she knew that they were not coming back for her.

right?! she just gets by on sheer stubbornness as much as anything else.
yes, she's got all kinds of skills, but her judgment is sometimes poor (overconfident one moment, dithering the next).
and she is compromised by her fear throughout the movie.

I have not read any spoilers so this is just my gut feeling, but I could see Luke being hesitant to train her because she maybe strong with the darkside. Maybe that's why he had her dumped off on Jakku in the first place, and he did NOT want her to find him at the end of the movie? I'm sure we all have our theories on Epsiode 8, but I think fans need to see the story out before they jump the gun on Rey.

Thanks for the compliment! Just my wish list for a great Episode 8. OH yes, an original title!! Something dealing with the rise of the dark side/First Order or to the imbalance of the force.

You didn't see the new poster for Episode 8?

It has a picture of the DeathStar and says, "We will rebuild!"
    Episode 8 coming December 2017.

I wouldn't say she's lousy at teamwork, she and Finn worked together well, then with Han they were almost synchronized. Spot on about her moving towards the dark though.

    Stuff Needed in Episode VIII

    1. Explain who Snoke is, his origins and his plans.
    2. Explain properly how Maz obtained Luke's/Vader's blue lightsabre.
    3. Explain Rey's parentage without dominating the entire film.
    4. Kill off or write out surplus background characters. (Poe Dameron, Finn, Hux, and Phasma,)
    5. Rename the stupidly titled 'Resistance' (which they're not) to 'New Rebel Alliance' or something more fitting with their actual role. (Resistance definition: "A resistance is a civilian paramilitary non-governmental force which works within an occupied territory of an oppressed region or state.")
    6. No more new superweapons.
    7. Droids: R2-D2 and C-3PO should have bigger and more responsible jobs in VIII. BB-8 becomes a secondary minor background droid like a GNK or Mousedroid
    8. Better Music than VII and Rogue One, more in line with OT and PT standards.
    9. Stop introducing new planets/moons that are only ever visited once.
    10. Fan-servicing cameos of past characters, objects or places, while acceptable, should not be overly obvious or focused on in such a way which distracts from the story.

    ;)

They will continue to build on the seeds the Lucas film story team has already planted.

The back stories of Ben Solo, Rey, Finn, and Snoke.
The concepts of organizations such as the Knights of Ren.
The quest for more information about the Jedi as an organization.

This is exactly what they were. There was a republic sending them limited aid while they fought the 1st Order.

Well we did SEE and HEAR Snoke in Ep7, so he's ahead of the Emperor in that regard. We got to see a hologram of Palps in Empire, but he didn't shine until ROTJ. So there's still time for Snoke to become a memorable dude.
