Well, we've been through that already. Being disappointed in a Star Wars film won't be new territory this time, so I can just shrug it off.

But unlike last time, there are people involved who are pouring their heart into this because they care about it, and have something to prove: that Star Wars movies can be good still.

I think we are in good shape.

Bring on the negative ratings; I don't come here for useless internet points.

If 'The Force Awakens' is like the opinions of PT detractors, it will suck immeasurably.

That's why I believe it will not be like such opinions.

Like the other six films before it, TFA will be a great Star Wars film.

As every one of the first six films have had their flaws, it's inevitable that TFA will also have its own flaws.

Even so, it will still be Star Wars and will provide ample fuel for my imagination as its predecessors did before it.

It's an insult to the people who made the PT to assume their hearts weren't in the PT. Star Wars films never stopped being good, only the imaginations of some portions of the audience stopped working for the PT like they did with the OT.

This I can agree with. With the present PTB TFA and ST are in very good hands.

    As you wish.

My fear that is sucks is one reason I'm not trying to stay spoiler free. I'm enjoying the endless speculation. I want to enjoy the ride getting to TFA. So that if the final payoff isn't that great, at least I had a great ride getting there.

I have yet to see or hear of a single Abrams film where the action was anything to write home about, or where the action specifically was highly praised.

On the contrary a common complaint about JJ is that he films like he's shooting a tv show.

As far as practical effects....ya can't say he has a reputation for that either. To date, his films have used pretty standard techniques, afaik TFA represents the one film where Abrams really went all out with puppeteered creatures and so on and I haven't heard anything about the film employing use of miniatures or anything like that. Which was actually common throughout the Prequel trilogy.

At any rate, the effects tells us nothing of the quality of the film.

And also JJ also isn't known for being a great editor the guy isn't even involved in the day to day process of editing his films. He's mentioned this in interviews. If it's working it's not his doing, because he really isn't there overseeing most of it and doesn't have much of a process.

While I think the movie is going to be great, I know there will be those who will continuously find something wrong with it. While the large majority of us will love it, there will still be some "Debbie-Downers" who will claim it isn't any good.

Better bet would be to storm bad robot, unless your goal is the original treatments.

I don't even think the PT sucked in my opinion. Yes, there were issues. The OT was better because George let others contribute to the script and he let others direct episodes V and VI. He got a cast that had a lot of chemistry together and didn't need much direction from him in the one that he did sit in the director's chair. I believe that they also got a bit of mentoring from Alec Guiness that couldn't have hurt.

For the PT, I wouldn't say he didn't care. Quite the opposite, he cared so much that he couldn't let go and allow outside contributions to the dialogue or allow anyone else to direct. I believe he has even admitted that he wasn't a good script writer, but more of a great concept guy. And I think others have stated in these forums that he wasn't much of an actor's director. All of that lead to a good product but not a great product like the OT was.

Compared with all that, everything that we have seen so far from official sources has me excited about December. I think we have an excellent team put together for the entire franchise going forward, which I take to mean things will be back to the level of greatness that we had with the OT. Everyone involved appears to be passionate about the work they are doing. Based on the TFA Celebration panel, I would say the new big three even have a good bit of chemistry. JJ seams to be just as much a fan of the franchise as anyone here in the cantina. As I briefly mentioned above, even Anthony Daniels sounded excited about the TFA and even made a comment that come December it might even be considered better than ESB (not quite in the same words).

But the real question asked in this thread was not whether or not we thought it would suck, but more how we would respond if it did. And while I really don't think it will, hypothetically if it did, I would probably still see it twice opening weekend. Once with my wife, possibly in 3D or IMAX 3D, and then once with my older daughter who will be 7 by then (same age I was when TESB came out), probably not in 3D because I'm not too sure 3D is good for their eyes at that young of an age, at least not for approximately 2 hours straight. I think even if I think it sucks, she would still enjoy it. The younger daughter would be staying home, because I don't think she would sit still or quiet for the entire movie and I wouldn't do that to any other fans. We'll probably also still get the Blu Ray at least once it comes out as a set for the whole trilogy, and I would still end up going to see 8 and 9 because I am that interested in seeing how the story continues.

I guess to answer the initial question, "If it sucks?"

I won't be disappointed, but more bummed that it will be the end of the SW era for me, and will confirm what I thought before 1999 that its very rare to recreate the magic of something original when it comes to movies.

I disagree, I think the first Star Trek film was great. It might have had a TV-esque heir about it but I think that fit really well. Mission Impossible 3 had some well shot action sequences I think. He outshone the previous film which was directed by John Woo! That's evidence of a good action director in my eye.

I think the blend of practical/CG in this clip is very well done, very cohesive. This scene made me excited and that creature was believable enough (bare in mind it was 6-7 years ago now) he really didn't NEED to make it that good, and he's not even into Star Trek.

But his films DO have decent editing, he may not do it himself but he knows who he should hire. I'm making assumptions here, but I believe he doesn't like to rewatch his footage too much so he can still get excited near the end of the process and put in effective finishing touches. It's kind of like the music producer Rick Rubin, he lets the engineers handle all that boring stuff so he can keep an audience/listener perspective.

Another thing I didn't mention is JJ's ear for audio mixing, all of the films/TV shows he's directed have had very impactful audio mixing, it's too much of a coincidence to just put down to the engineers imo.

I think he's the best all-rounder in Hollywood, and that's why I think he's cut out for Star Wars.

I know this sounds odd, but even if it sucks ,it will be great because before George Lucas sold to disney , no one thought we would see another star wars movie .

Everything I've seen so far indicates to me that TFA will be a great film, and I will be walking into the theater on the 18th with that assumption.

On a personal note, I have had two horribly tragic events occur in my life in as many years. Events that I am still trying to wrap my head around and accept. If TFA ends up being a bad film, I'll be disappointed for sure, but it will really be just a minor blip on my radar in comparison to the emotions and grief I've been learning to deal with as of late.

If it ends up being a bad film, well, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'll deal with it, and move on...

But I don't think it's going to be!
