What If the Force Awakens sucks?

I would've taken Brad Bird over JJ. But I think JJ will be alright. I'm just not expecting to have my mind blown. I'm expecting to see just a regular-grade Star Wars movie. The big difference for me, is the returning cast, not JJ. Mark, Harrison, Carrie and the rest are going to make this feel like a Star Wars movie....good or bad.

 

I have been wondering what the future of the franchise would be if this movie stinks, or maybe even worse - "just okay." Will it further divide the fanbase even more into PT vs. OT vs. ST? Or will people be sick enough of the Star Wars brand for it to suffer enormous losses? This film will almost certainly be hugely successful no matter what, but I do wonder what would happen to ticket sales of subsequent films and merchandise.

I will be honest here - I get a little bit irritated when my friends tell me I should temper my expectations for this movie. I will try to explain, and I apologize if I fumble this a bit in my analogy. It's sort of like when you are a fan of a team (I am a huge Mets fan). Should I just accept that your last few seasons stunk, and continue to blindly follow you? Or should I demand a better team that can play for a championship title and build a dynasty? If fans don't demand the best, then chances are we are left with mediocrity. At least I know that J.J. is also a huge fan, and wants this to be the best movie it can possibly be. I just hope he has the talent, story, and actors necessary to make it great.

In the meantime, just like anything else in life I will do my best (I don't know how successful I will be at this though) to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Well, it is an old topic though. This topic has been discussed since the forum started. There have been several threads about it. I made one myself back September or something...but it was bit more negative than this one haha.

I think you guys should whip up a special badge for him, if you don't have one already.

Something like "Full Spectrum Warrior" or something like that, for getting all ratings on a single post.

 

If the movie does not turn out well, I'll be extra glad that I decided not to stay spoiler free so I could at least enjoy this time leading up to the film.

 

I don't think you will get the PT vs OT vs ST debate if this movie stinks because I think many fans will just check out at that point (including myself). The OT vs PT had many layers to it that this trilogy just doesn't have. The PT vs OT debate was in part because of the Special Editions and changes made because of the PT. It essentially triggered an OOT vs SE which was disguised as a OT vs PT debate that still rages on today because the OOT has never been released fully remastered. Then the PT changed the OT story arc and was known as 'The Tragedy of Darth Vader' so it essentially changed the whole context of the story. The ST is really an add on to the OT movies and because its been 30 years since the events of ROTJ, there is not much they can change to change the OT story that much. And because its been so long since the PT, the ST story really wont have much effect on that too.

As for ticket sales, I think there are a base of SW fanboys and little kids that will be there every movie. I still think TFA will make the most of the ST films, but so did The Original SW and TPM, so that is a natural drop off after the first movie.

I'm a Phillies fan, so I can't even talk about expectation as we just suck!

As for expecations, I would try to walk into it this way. You can go in thinking it will be a very good or great movie (as the trailer has wowed many fans), but will it resonate with you the same way the OT did simply because there are new characters? There are a reason why most sequels suck, or most prequels or sequels with new characters fall short: simply because it is very hard to create iconic characters.

We all love Luke, Leia and Han, and that is a BIG reason we fell in love with the OT movies. I have always said the biggest problem with the PT wasn't the story, wasnt the CGI, wasn't midiclorians, but I didn't give a crap about the characters. I honestly can't tell you how Finn, Rey, and Poe will resonate with me and that will be the key to whether I love it or not. I hope that makes sense.

And I believe that's the lesson we should all get from this: Just have fun. There are so many horrific things happening around the world that we should cherish all things, even the ones that we consider mediocre.
Anyone remember the gun shooting during the release of The Dark Knight Rises? It doesn't matter if you thought the movie was good or not, the fact is that the people who lost their lives will NEVER have the chance share their experiences.

I agree. One thing I like about movies is that they are there for our entertainment and enjoyment. Oh yeah, sure, it's great to see depth in movies and positive messages and whatnot, those are bonuses and what makes a movie stand out, but they are essentially made for our entertainment. And most of all, watching a movie is a time when I can forget about my worries and troubles in real life for about 2 hours or so and view someone's story, whether it's realistic fiction or not. Don't take things too seriously watching this movie that you feel you need to nitpick at every detail (at least not right away). Just go along for the ride.

 

To be fair I'm feeling pretty positive...I just get a good vibe from everything I've seen and read...every interview I've seen from JJ tells me he's a smart guy and knows what he wants to acheive.

They seem to be doing everything possible to make the best movie they can...From ditching the Lucas treatment/Arndt script ( a bold move but it tells me they aren't settling for 2nd best here ) to commiting to building massive sets and having puppets, acrobats, real robotics and martial artists...this thing is going to be a spectacle , and one that's very much based on real performances and actual places plus all the up to date FX wizardry we know ILM will bring....then we STILL have the music...the maestro is back.

So the only unknown is the script and new characters. IF they've nailed that then they will knock this thing out the park...if not then I think the worst case scenario is we will still have a "good" movie, one that looks and feels a lot like Star Wars but falls a bit short....Sounds like Return of The Jedi territory then !

If they fail I don't think it will be from lack of trying..(because there is no try..only do or do not)
