By that logic you could claim no stories have plot-holes then. That any narrative inconsistency could be answered by the writer if you just give them the chance. You’re invalidating the entire premise and thinking you’re making a point.
Yeah, especially how ships in our world can suddenly travel hundreds of miles in the blink of an eye. Totally analogous!:D

Look, I don’t think it’s a substantially difficult concept to grasp. The FO supposedly has a sizeable enough fleet to pose a credible threat to a galaxy, but can’t summon a single ship imposing enough to stall the Radduss until it falls back into the Supremacy’s firing range? They’d rather piss away hours chasing them down and allowing the possibility someone might come to their aide instead of ending it right there? How does that make sense to anyone?

The only counterargument I’ve heard so far is that Hux is just super lousy at ‘generaling’. Plot induced stupidity?

The argument that in fiction everything is valid is ridiculous, a fictional world establishes it's fictional premises and everything else is supposed to work like in real life until explained otherwise, otherwise it's impossible to relate to that world.
Explosions in space have been established as a fictional premise not only in star wars but in almost every sci fi movie or tv show, that doesn't mean that we can change every law of physics according to convenience without explanation.

Well, not THE problem but within the context of what we're talking about, yes.

Point taken, but it's been established within the universe of Star Wars since 1977 that the laws of aerodynamics do not work in any way like the real world, or else the Falcon would not have been able to take off from Mos Eisley.

Things stick out when they're new exceptions to the established rules. I accept sound and flames in space as part of the established rules. TLJ, in my opinion, has a lot of new exceptions to them.

That is a very good point, but as you said that was established from the beginning, in the case we are discussing they are suddenly changing the rules, we have seen plenty of ship battles before in star wars and whenever a ship loses propulsion they continue in uniform linear motion and most probably crash but they don't suddenly brake in space.

I'll have to take your word for that regarding the loss of propulsion, I've only seen the PT a few times and never within 10 years, so I'm sure that's where you getting that, because I can't happen to think of any similar instances other than in ROTJ and in that case that ship didn't continue in a straight line it fell down into the Death Star. Actually, I guess that one was more or less stationary, so I can't think of any.

When there is gravity like the deathstar or coruscant they do.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 20, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 20, 2017 ---
That's because of gravity, if you want examples of what im saying paying attention to the fighters in the OT battles.

How is that supposed to be a plot hole?

The FO discovered hyper space tracking (or whatever it is called) pre ANH.

    While you digest that.

We saw Luke go fishing. He went down a very large pole. We then saw him back on top of the cliff with a very large fish. It was a defining and very exciting part of the film.

Ummm....how did he get back up the cliff carrying a large fish. I mean fish are heavy. He would have to climb back up the pole one handed.

Please don't say he used the force lol.

Plot Hole !!! Plot fish hole.

Actually, at first I was just thinking of big ships, but after I posted that I was thinking more regarding the fighters. They go all over the place - up, down, into spins - based on how they were hit - ut do continue to move forward. They more or less behave like airplanes would behave. And there, I think you have a point.

However, if I can return to the larger ships, because that is the one in question from TLJ. The way I've always seen it, in SW the larger ships tend to move like ocean-going ships, maneuvering more slowly and falling when damaged akin to a boat sinking. Both of these behaviors (the fighters and the large cruisers) are done for purely visual reasons. Visually we understand and can relate to these movements of vessals when they look the way they do in size and shape. If that is the established pattern, it is not inconsistent for a powerless larger starship to fall back. The look of that particular moment, too, - the TLJ support ships falling back and off course with no care to topic of friction in space I mean - was done for purely visual reasons, much like the Star Destroyer into Death Star.

But that is the way I've always seen it, been very forgiving about things like that in fantasy, you surely differ, which leads to how it bothers you but not me.

    Terrible inconsistencies.

TLJ annoyed me because sometimes ships could fly through enemy shields & other times they couldn't. Made space fights hard to watch.

Many inconsistencies between TLJ & TFA. In TFA both Snoke & Ren talk about how Kylo & his knights destroyed Luke's temple & killed his Jedi. In TFA Leia said she sent Ben to Luke because Snoke turned him to the dark side. In TLJ the Knights of Ren disappeared & Ben turned because of Luke.

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FOR ME !!

When the FO started shooting the transporter ships....within a space of 10 seconds in the film they had shot about 3 or 4. I can't remember how many transporter ships there were but given that rate they should have been all destroyed within a couple of minutes. I remember thinking whilst watching the film, well this is the end. I will get my coat.

Also, statistically Leias ship (was that the only one left ??? ) should have been destroyed but for the purpose of the film is was not. I mean come on.

Then of course on the planet they decided to attack the FO on a suicide mission in those old rickety fighter things which would obviously kill what remaining resistance fighters that were left. Rather than doing that, they had enough time for them all to escape. Therefore, they did not need luke do his nonsense at the end and die pointlessly distracting the FO. Also, how did Luke now they were on that planet ????

I mean, it is just a pure farce the TLJ. So badly written.

Theres a lot of inconsistencies in the story, or admissions that make it super hard to understand.

    Like bombers in space.

Episode 7 created a lot of potential for coolness. Ep. 8 ignored them to crap all over the OT.

It’s like someone decided to sever the ties of OT!

Hey guys, here’s a medal, but for what it’s worth, within three decades it will come full circle. Luke, you’ll travel the galaxy for the meaning of the Force, collect things, but never actually read them. And die.

So the boldness of this movie is slightly remaking OT with some tweaks.

Small band of rebels, face off against a galactic empire with super weapons. Yep, just revolutionary.

Ahh, you mean like in A New Hope when they say “Rebel Base, 30 seconds and closing” but then there is conveniently 66 seconds until “The Death Star has cleared the planet”. Yeah, Star Wars sucks.

The main characters being the ones that survives random fire in a movie, you must truly hate a lot of films.

They had time to escape but the schematics of the rebel base clearly told them that there was no way out other than the front door.
It took Luke doing his nonsense for them to realize that the schematics of the base were incomplete and that there had to be a way out. Because Luke wouldn’t be there otherwise.

How would he not know where his sister was? If you don’t accept that the force connection he clearly has with her would tell him that then he could have just asked her. Or received the distress call they were sending out.

I strongly recommend seeing the movie again, it has a shitload of answers and as a bonus it may just grow on you.

I'm so happy to see you guys are still arguing about an imaginary concept 9 hours after I last saw you!

It fills me with warm fuzzies to know you guys are arguing on the internet than doing something productive, like me.

Any plot holes actually discovered yet?

If there was a force connection between them two, why did Leia not know where Luke was when they were trying to find him? Or does the force only work one way ??? Remember of course, the plot of TFW was basically to find Luke.

You could argue that Leia is 'less' force sensative....but then she managed to be blown up in space, remain unscathed and fly through space back to the ship. Can luke do that ? Methinks not.

I did not see any equipment on the island that could receive a distress call ?? I could see the film again, but I am sure I won't spot any.

You could debate the holes, the plot, continuity errors all day. All films have them. This one has an awful lot. For a big budget Star Wars movie with a hot shot director that is not very good.

Forget storyline for a minute, it was a badly written, directed and produced film. Rian really needs to go back to film school before being let lose with another 3 Star Wars films. He is making school boy errors. He will just embarrass himself again.
