I’m a bit unsure of the timeline. Ben looked like a teenager when he destroyed Luke’s temple but I thought he’d be closer to 23 around then.

What's funny is that, in the novel, it went through lengths of creating this galactic drama about Vader’s parentage reveal because 6 years prior to TFA nobody knew what happened in ROTJ, because for some reason Leia and Luke kept it a secret. And it ended with Leia in the Resistance, Luke still unreachable, and nobody in galaxy knowing that Vader was redeemed. It's kind of weird.

What makes this even more odd is that Rey in TLJ who not only knows that Luke Skywalker is the hero who saved Vader, the conversation is even framed as if that was common knowledge.

I love how they explained this in the movies. Oh wait, they never did.

I thought the Vader reveal would be the tipping point for Ben.

Yeah, she did know a lot and I too wondered where she learned that from. My guess was Leia. They just didn’t want to tell the audience something we already knew.

Another good question for another thread. I'm not sure what happens in Bloodline is that big of a deal. If this film was primarily about how Ben turned I'd understand. This film only discusses the final moment.

It said Tekka found the map on Jakku. The whole Artoo thing was badly handled but this is a thread about TLJ, not TFA.

Because Rian Johnson wanted to assassinate his character. It was a personal decision for the benefit for himself as the man that runs sta
What is the 'plot' of TFA and TLJ ?

Can anyone actually answer that question ??? What is the 'plot' of these two films ?

Without no plot there are no holes. I said that before.

Well they do have a plot...The first is the search for Luke Skywalker by both sides. and the second one is the continued struggles of the new force users and rebels as everyone vies for power.

But the second one is more of a free form continuation of the story based on the characters. its a character study really and I'm fine with that.

I think between the two films there is little over arching plot, but the same could be said of ANH and TESB when those two came out, without the final chapter we aren't sure what the plot is building towards.

IF the final film features a balancing of the force, or a victory for the goodies or whatever then the whole plot will reveal iself. such as, if the trillogy is about how ben solo can't be redeemed despite everyones best efforts, then that will be the overall moral of the trilogy.

Oh, of course. That totally wasn't born out of the fact that the original trilogy was originated from fledgling filmmakers who had no idea as to whether or not the first installment would even succeed financially. That was totally an artistic choice.

I definitely describe ESB as a 'nothing overarching really happens other than the Rebels get chased off of Hoth'. It's really about a couple of characters. TLJ definitely rhymes with ESB in that sense. FO chases the Resistance to Crait, and the film is really just about Kylo killing Snoke and becoming Supreme Leader, Luke's story, and Rey, Poe and Leia inheriting the responsibilities of rebuilding the Resistance/Jedi.

Ugh....it would have been awesome for Carrie Fisher and Daisy Ridley to have 9 all to themselves. May the Force Be With JJ & Lucasfilm....telling a story without the actor they were actually going to base it on. Daunting AF.

Seems like that fledgeling film maker thing you're talking about is what LF are emulating with this trilogy. Hence Rian Johnson getting to direct the film, and the fact that not plot was outlined to him before hand.

just because it happened organically in 1977 doesn't mean LF aren't trying the same technique to re-capture the magic.

Recapturing the magic is an inherently misguided and pretentious aim. That's my point. Lucasfilm needed to confront that from the very beginning and have used the resources they know they have in order to actually write a trilogy that doesn't come off as incredibly disjointed.

But Luke was just an illusion. He didn’t actually need a way in. Him being there wasn’t indicative of anything. They followed the ice foxes to find an exit and even then there was still no way out.

The main conceit of the film is that this pursuit must last until fuel runs out. The good guys can’t get away and the bad guys can’t catch them. That’s the plot for the majority of the film. The FO has other ships. WE KNOW THIS! So why don’t they call another one in to head them off? The only answer is that they’re comically inept.

If a character in a story is in a difficult situation and has been established to possess skills/tools that could easily resolve that situation, but inexplicably doesn’t, how is that not a plot-hole? You can make something up to help it make sense to you. You can say “a wizard did it”. But if the story doesn’t actually address it, then it’s absolutely a hole in the plot.
Which basically makes it happenstance. Did Luke even know if there was a way out? If he did, then why not just tell Leia? Destiny?

Or arrogant. Or both. It could be that Hux wanted to be the one to destroy them from his ship to please Snoke. Either way, why risk other ships when you are 100% confident that this plan will work?

That's not a plot hole. If it were, then Star Wars would be full of them throughout every episode. If you can fill a "hole" with your imagination and it makes sense, no plot hole. If something happens that is impossible to explain, then you can scream "plot hole"!

"The Force will be with you...".

Then only have the ship slow them down until they’re within weapons range and destroy them personally. Tada.
Because Hux’s last plan to destroy them above D'Qar utterly failed. Why leave it to chance? That’s the far greater risk. What if a Resistance friendly ship had shown up and started ferrying people off? What could they have done about it? Write a strongly worded letter?
Then using that interpretation, can you please present some examples from other well-known movies that DO count as plot-holes? That way we can all be on the same page here. Remember, your task is “impossible to explain”. Can’t wait ;)
