So a lot of discussion has been had about how good TFA is and where it sits in relation to the rest of the films, but who cares about all that story and acting globbidy-glook?
I'm here for the lightsaber fights!
Overall I really liked this fight, I won't list every fight in the saga (because I'm not insane), but I'll say that it comes in just above Anakin v. Obi-Wan, and the only two I like better are Luke v. Vader in TESB and the Darth Maul fight in TPM.
From a pure visual standpoint it's probably my favourite (isn't it cool how the lightsabers themselves illuminate a lot of the scene?), and the choreography felt nice and weighty.
My only downside (and to me it isn't even that big of a deal given Ren's condition) is how Rey is able to completely and utterly turn things in her favour at the end there, but again, not a dealbreaker.

    What are all your thoughts?

    Ranking by SUBSTANCE

    1. Luke / Vader - TESB
    2. Luke / Vader - ROTJ
    3. Rey - Fin / Kylo - TFA
    4. Maul / Qui Gon - Kenobi - TPM
    5. The rest of the Prequel Trilogy

I find the "stylistic ballet with a stick" of the PT about as exciting as watching most of today's new music superstars: A big choreographed show where none of the headliners write their own music or play instruments. Totally empty.

I would've enjoyed TFA's duel a lot more had Kylo been given a normal lightsaber, and not that big-ass Jesus sword.

Seriously, that thing looked like it got snatched from some backwoods Klan rally. lol

Oh yeah! I absolutely adore those (commercials? trailers? short films? I don't really know the proper terminology). I remember when the first one came out and I was just absolutely floored. I still watch them just to watch them every once in a while.

The best part of if was that he wasn't "given" anything. He made it himself, and in every way, it represents him, raw and unstable.

Maybe I just need to watch it again, but I thought that in so far as how it was filmed it was just alright. I guess its the nature of trying to capture action in a forest, but it felt like the view was obstructed by trees way too often. The choreography itself was pretty good though.

I love all of the light-saber duels in the saga and this one in TFA joins the list. Though I am fond of the PT duels stylistically, none in the seven films are better or worse than the others in my mind. I love them all. Star Wars has aspects within it that are totally unique to the saga. Among those being light-sabers and light-saber duels, singling one out serves no purpose for this fan.

High, but not on top. It's better than duels in OT but I missed the perfection of PT. It was clearly a duel of warriors who either don't feel he force (just like Finn in my opinion) or feel the force but are not trained very well in sword combat (Kylo and Rey). I loved the duels of PT where we were shown a spectacular fight, full of finesse and fast moves. Choreography in PT was sometimes silly, but it still showed us that they (jedi) really had incredible skills due to their training.

    Luke vs Vader - ESB
Rey + Finn vs Kylo - TFA
    Anakin vs Obi-Wan - ROTS
    Windu vs Sidious - ROTS
Luke vs Vader + Emperor - ROTJ
    Yoda vs Sidious - ROTS
    Anakin + Obi-Wan vs Dooku - ROTS
    Anakin + Obi-Wan vs Dooku - AOTC
    Obi-Wan + Qui-Gon vs Maul - TPM
    Yoda vs Dooku - AOTC

The PT lightsaber duels were frankly pretty horrible. The dance-fighting just didn't work.
I rank Sidious lightsaber duels high only because Ian McDiarmid's over-the-top Wicked Witch of the West cackling-type performance is so enjoyable. Anakin vs Obi-Wan in ROTS is extremely cartoonish and almost so lavish that it's silly, but the stakes are high...so...

    1. Vader vs Luke - ROTJ - the great conclusion, duel that was as much physical, as it was psychological, intensive and engaging.

    2. Kylo vs Rey - From visual stand point JJ hit the sweet spot between OT and PT. We have weight, emotions, roughness and not too long duration from OT, and more dynamic edit, more camera angles and overall better choreography from PT.

    3. Vader vs Luke - ESB - great mood, it shows main hero, who succeeded (wasn't captured, didn't fell for Vader temptation) and failed (didn't finish his Jedi trening, was beaten by Vader) at the same time.

    4. Darth Maul & Savage Opress vs Darth Sidious - (Clone Wars) this one simply shows, what a beast Palpatine was. He was able to kill both of his opponents with Force alone in a very first move, but instead he decided to have some fun.

These are the standouts for me.

Imposible to rank. Need to watch the movie one more time. But will not beat these two battles:

    1 - Luke x Vader (TESB)
    2 - Luke x Vader (ROTJ)

My top 3 would be -

    Luke/Vader ROTJ
    Rey/Finn/Kylo TFA
    Luke/Vader TESB

I loved how grounded and dare I say realistic the saber battles were in TFA. I didn't like them in the prequels because they were too flashy, almost too quick, to a point where it was hard to decipher what was going on. The aerial gymnastics also won't be missed. Anakin/Obi Wan at times in ROTS seemed too powerful, too agile, almost invincible. In the TFA, like the OT, there's that more grounded feel that shows that despite Jedi and Sith being very powerful, they're not unstoppable and could be hurt even by non force users, which I think is right.

This is what we should really be talking about!!! I am deciding as I write......ok, I got it
    1. ROTJ Luke vs. Vader: Nothing comes close to the emotion and stakes that this fight brings.
2 as of now, but could change. Rey and Finn vs. Kylo: Could have been about a minute longer in my opinion, but everything from it taking place directly after Han's death, to Rey force pulling the saber and to the ground separating them brings it to the top. Also, I loved the opposing styles, how heroic Finn was, and how the fight looked like it came directly out of GoT.
    3. Obi-Wan vs. Anakin: It's long, maybe too long, but this probably the only prequel fight that actually looks as if they are trying to kill each other, most of the time.
    4. ESB Luke vs. Vader: I might be the only person who ranks it this low; I think it would top most rankings. I like it a lot, but it's not one that I ever want to frequently revisit.

    5. Yoda vs. Palpatine: Cool setting and it's fun to see the two most powerful force users at the time go at it...
    6. I guess Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon vs. Maul: I honestly don't understand how beloved this fight is......Darth Maul is not built up well throughout the film and then just appears out of nowhere, I have zero attachment to Qui-Gon when he dies, the fight itself looks like a silly dance, and the way in which Obi-Wan defeats Maul is beyond ridiculous. Double saber is cool, and that's about it.
    7. Vader vs. Obi-Wan: I actually kind of like this fight, but I never watch it and it's as slow as we all remember.

    8. Any fight with Dooku

Yeah... I understand the sentiment. I actually kinda like the pure Anakin v. Dooku portion of the fight in RotS, but still... yeah.

First. I didn't think the two Luke V Vader fights could be beaten, but Rey V Kylo is my favourite.
