    That means the ST will see the end of the Jedi like the OT has seen the end of the sith? That would pretty much lower the chance for Luke to survive.

    I'm sorry to disappoint you but what Rian Johnson most likely did is he googled "last thesaurus" and picked the first word from a list of synonyms without any agenda. Take a look here.

    The final Jedi is interesting. Could mean the end of the Jedi or same as the title, only a small number remaining.

    Yes it probably will!
    As for Luke's slim chances of survival, not necessarily! It can also mean that Luke will train Rey as a Jedi first (therefore concidered the Last/Final Jedi) and then slowly exploring darker roads, thus no longer be considered Jedi!

    Since he went off tho explore the roots of the Jedi he maybe the end of the Jedi but also a rest to a flast "safe point" of Jedism, that was less constitutional. It is defintily interesting and "in character" for someone who wasn't raised like the Jedi intentioned for 1000years.

    I think these ideas would lead up to an AMAZING plot twist!!

    What if, much like Obi Wan told young Luke that Vader "killed" Anakin when he actually turned to the dark side, we hear a former apprentice (Ben) "killed" Luke's other apprentices actually means that they collectively turned to the dark side? And what if they turned to the dark side for legitimate reasons concerning the wrongdoings of Luke? What if Luke realised that the very denial of the dark side lures the light-pathed Jedi straight into it, and thus decides to end the Jedi order for good in an attempt to bring balance to the force? What if Luke's tragic fate is ending the Jedi order, and thus having to face against his former apprentices the KOR, who in actuality started out as...the last jedi? What if Luke and Rey are fated to kill "the last jedi"?

    He's trying to clear it up now. I think this backtracking indicates that Luke isn't the last Jedi forever but the last remaining Jedi at this point in time. However, I think this also shows how it is a poorly conceived title and that Johnson doesn't really comprehend the subtle difference between "last" and "final". Final is definitive.

    Johnson just gave it a stupid title, but it's just about Luke. He is the last Jedi as described throughout TFA - and no one thought that'd be the end of them then!
    Tekka says without the Jedi there can be no balance. Snoke fears the return of the Jedi. Of course Luke isn't the last Jedi and the title doesn't even suggest he will die.
    In fact the title suggests he will live long into IX and maybe beyond as this is all about resurrecting the Jedi again.

    It's just a stupid title. Johnson is already trying to put out the fires.

    Looks like he really didn't mean "final-final" – which means he apparently uses the word differently from the rest of us. I don't think "final" is often read as "currently the last one", the way he's using it, but I'll embrace his clarifying Tweets anyway!

    Given the last spoiler
    Rey sourronded by small orbs of light that to me looks like Yoda meeting the spirit of Qui Gon in the final episodes of TCW
    chances that the Last Jedi are Yoda/Kenobi plus Qui Gon and maybe Anakin are higher now.
    I really think this ST may be around some kind of masterplan they're up to.
    I've said something like this a while ago...

    Of course I do.
    But them (Yoda, Kenobi etc...) are the last of the "Order". The last of what the Jedi used to be.
    I guess we can agree that Luke's path has been an unconventional one if compared to what it used to be.
    In addition the title may have a double meaning:
    On one side: the Last = Yoda, Kenobi etc..
    On the other side: The Last = Luke, Rey maybe Ben/Kylo

    Luke is the last Jedi. It would make no sense for him to be described this way in the crawl for TFA and by Snoke in the same film and then not be The Last Jedi.
