Star Wars lives from the differences in its characters. The setup Obi-Wan, Luke, Han and Chewie alone is comedic gold. Same for Luke, Han and Leia.

I imagine Finn rescuing Poe alone will make for some fine quips. Excuse me, one is the son of two Resistance heroes, world wise, all about duty and with I guess one or two rough edges that have been polished razor sharp by what he just went through and the other has been raised a stormtrooper and just deserting his post. And while his upbringing likely was not quite a walk in the park, I can very well imagine that Finn has no idea about how the world outside the FO works.

Poe and his faithful astromech BB8... who is a tiny heap of two rolling balls glued together! That thing rolling alone, bumping over stones, trying to get to wherever or away from whatever is comedic gold. No cheap jokes necessary. BLACK LEADER HAS A TINY SUPERCUTE ASTROMECH! How is that not funny?

I think the humor would be too spoilery and that's why we aren't seeing it. SW humor is really rooted in circumstance and the things our heroes say or do in the moment (after we get to know them). Han and Luke's banter would not be funny without their history. "Laugh it up fuzzball" would not be funny without seeing the scene before. The dark humor in "I find your lack of faith disturbing" wouldn't work without the previous discussion that leads up to it. Basically, TFA does not want to reveal too much about the characters yet and there is just not enough time in the trailer to show a funny moment.

I do think there is A LOT of potential for humor. Boyega seems great so far-his presence shows he is more than capable of creating some classic SW humor.
BB-8 has already made me laugh in the droid interview with R2, and of course we have returning favorites who brought us laughter in the OT (Han, Leia, Chewy). Rey seems like a quiet and stoic character-and I think the fact that she will be paired up with such big personalities could result in the SW humor we love.

Any great moment of humor from the OT just would not make sense without the context surrounding it. Everything comes down to the situations or characters in a moment-and how they react. (Whether its droid banter, Han/Leia, Han/Luke, or Chewy making a certain sound as a response to a certain event) context is key, and if TFA's case...context is spoilers.

As Irvin Kerschner eloquently said about ESB, "I knew the movie needed humor, but they couldn't be gags."

    The OT = Humor
    The PT = Gags

This is an example of a preview with "humor" in it. ::shudder:: See 0:43 and 0:51 for big trailer laughs...
I think humor is an essential part of Star Wars magic, but if the humor is good-it will reveal itself in the story and characters, not the trailer.

Edit: This is not the trailer, but it is a preview of sorts, and the forced humor takes you right out of the epic adventure being shown.

All things considered, it's not a bad trailer/teaser/etc/. It has a pretty epic setup and succeeds in making TPM look more awesome than it was....until the laughs begin.

Yep I have seen enough movies that had all their best lines in the trailer, why did I pay the ticket?!

The thing about humor in any movie is that you can't force it, as its got to come naturally through the actors and dialogue.

Han, Luke, Leia had great chemistry, so lines like, "Laugh it up fuzzball!" or "Where did you dig up that old fossil?" come off very funny to the audience and seem natural.

Hopefully Rey, Finn and Poe have that same chemistry, and hopefully there are some good one liners between the new generation and Han Solo probably revolving around his age or their youth and inexperience.

God, I hope there's some humor in it. The prequels didn't have any humor and look how those turned out!

Lol I know, I'm just trying to be funny...

Well if your worry that it will be like Star Trek you should go watch Star Trek again because that had some rather funny moments that built the characters. I think the Poe Boyega moments will be awesome.

Droid reactions and sidekick banter has been so ripe for humor in all the Star Wars films. I hope we don't lose that in the effort to make a blockbuster film.

I just watched the BB-8 videos, especially his presentation and little stand-off with R2.
    I'm sorry... a) I want that and b) it's hillarious!
That thing is knee high, it's wobbly, wiggly, bouncy and the sounds it makes are straight out of baby seal territory.

    Move camera left:

Poe Dameron, the best Maclunkey pilot in the Galaxy. Leader of the Black X-Wing squadron. Maclunkey BLACK X-WING! Trusted by Leia Organa with sensitive highly classified missions. A true leader of the Resistance.

Pan camera right. Pause. Dip camera to knee height:

    "greeeuw?" *bounce* wiggle*wiggle*roll**wobble*

Here's the video. BB-8 Star Wars Celebration Anaheim

Of course it'll have humor! It's a Star Wars movie! Even Episode 3 had some humor, not much..and none of it was actually funny. I hope it won't include as much humor as "The Martian", but it should definitely have some. As always, the droids will deliver a lot of that humor and it will be interesting to see what kind of personality BB8 has and how he interacts with R2 & 3PO.

JJ already mentioned it was funny during Star Wars celebration or comic con I believe. Finns going to be humorous I'm sure. Poe seems to have a since of humor too. Hans always got a since of humor. BB-8 should be pretty cute funny. Maz might be humorous.

The trailer is pretty dark and doesn't seem to display the humorous stuff but the movies got to have the humor we all know Star Wars to have or it's not going to feel like Star Wars. I guess we'll know pretty soon. Can't wait to see what we all think after we see the movie and discuss what was good and what was bad. Hopefully all good :)

I think this is what Oscar Isaac was pushing for, he said he had discussions with J.J. about getting the performances "messy" which i'm guessing means more improvised like ANH and ESB.

I think we DO see a hint of humor in the trailer: in the shot where they walk past the giant red droid. Don't forget that a lot of the humor in the OT happened in brief moments when we got glimpses of odd alien beings. The cantina? C-3PO and R-2 in the Sandcrawler? Lots of brief moments of levity from shots of strange droids and aliens. The shot with the giant red droid lumbering past them looks to be a moment of that sort....

I think it is important to remember the trailers are for marketing purposes. If the trailer was just a mash up of funny moments, I do not think it would draw is large of a crowd. I like to think it will follow a similar course as Age of Ultron. The teaser for Age of Ultron was very serious, very little fun, but the drama of scenes is what had everyone so excited. And if you saw the movie, you will remember there was plenty of humor throughout.

I believe JJ's main aim is to bring back the charisma of the galaxy we saw in A New Hope. His whole approach is inspired by everything Spielberg/Lucas did prior to the 90s, so there's definitely gonna be some humor.

We need some laugh out loud moments like Yoda going through Luke's stuff, Leia saying "Get this walking carpet out my of my way" etc.. I think humor is the key to this movie being great. J.J. can really take advantage here, almost every modern blockbuster is too serious for its own good.
