Peter Mayhew talked about John having "a comic's sense of humor". That gives me a lot of hope for TFA having funny and memorable moments with the main characters.

"John, I liked very, very much. He’s a great actor. We had several scenes together, and John is one of those guys who knows how to react to any situation. He’s got a marvelous face… he’s got a wonderful personality. He has an advantage because he has a comic’s sense of humour."

    I like that quote a lot. :)

I hope the steer away from slap stick and that kind of thing that sort of fell flat in the PT. The belching, fart and stepping in poop thing too just wasn't very funny to me. The humor that worked best was the dry or more sarcastic type thing in both the OT and PT. I can see Poe and Finn going at it, with even Rey and BB8 playing off both of them.

I posted this earlier in response to the trailer reactions and got a lot of negativity coming my way ("Pessimism" is not a bad thing! Arrrgh!) but I have a never say die attitude so I'm starting a new topic.

So, I liked the trailers as did most people here, but the one thing that gives me a slightly nervous (dare I say "pessimistic"?) feeling about the upcoming movie is that the trailers seemed pretty, well, grim. Aside from BB-8 rolling around there was a definite lack of whimsy, humor, or even optimism, which I thought odd given this is the first act of the trilogy, not the "ESB" slot. It also makes me scared. I was not a big fan of the Nolan Batman movies or the Snyder Superman movie because I don't go to escapist entertaiment to leave feeling down and hopeless. I'm not saying this should be all-yocks or even that I'm looking for slapstick like we got in the prequels, but one of the things, IMO, that made the OT great was that there was plenty of wit and warmth even when the stakes were high. Think about the garbage compactor, the failing hyperdrive, the mynocks, the sail barge...there were always jokes. Always banter.

It could be that this stuff just didn't make it into the trailer. That's what I'm hoping. But I guess my question is, will you feel disappointed if this is the most "serious" Star Wars yet?

I think its almost ridiculous to say that TFA wont have any humor. C3PO and R2 have always held roll of comic relief for example.

I remember a gross/intentionally ironic potty humor scene in "Not Another Teen Movie" where the teacher is ranting about what humor really is and questioning the new student generations' sense of humor (before something disgusting happens). I remember understanding the teachers' lament when I saw some of the stupid poodoo humor in the prequels.

The teacher remarked how humor was found in wit, in a clever turn of phrase, etc. I think that is what we saw in the OT and that is what we'll see in TFA. We need context to get the humor, and for context, we need spoilers....so the humor will hit us when its supposed to....in the theaters when we least expect it! That is what made so many funny moments in the OT. It all came down to circumstance, wit, character relationships, and surprise.

Note: I am not above laughing at immature humor...I just expect more out of Star Wars.

I just rewatched ESB last night, an was struck by the fact that, despite this being the "dark" movie of the trilogy, there were jokes almost from beginning to end (mainly in the form of Han/Leia banter but also plenty of droid humor, the running gag of the Falcon failing and "It's not my fault," "Apology accepted, Captain Needa," and more). While I'm not looking for "physical" comedy, humor is a huge component of the movies thus far, and I too am worried that this is going to be nothing more than a Nolan/Snyder-esque angst fest from beginning to end.

    Yup:

    - General Wicket on the Resistance Base
    - Commander Ackbar ending his mission briefing to attack Starkiller base by saying "It's a wrap!"
    - Leia to Han: "Now you're scruffy looking"!
    - Rey to Luke: "Here, I think it belongs to you" presenting a lightsaber "And this too" Presenting an old and rusty prosthetic hand.

JJ's a funny and clever guy. I'd be VERY surprised if there was no form of humor.

And the same type of humor, namely, what Travisamo says below.

I agree. I couldn't get into ultron. People are dying and everyone is just making dumb jokes. It makes it hard to take anything seriously.

Damn son. Vader chocking out fools is no laughing matter.

Choking fools = not funny. Choking fools while being incredibly sarcastic = comedy gold.

I absolutely think it just did not make it into the trailer (humor). The main reason for this? Probably because of the "childish" tone of the PT, aside from much of Episode 3 (which was very dark). I think JJ wanted to set the tone early on that there was a crisp, solid direction for the story and that we should be very interested to see what happens with the plot and how the characters will be the driving force behind the ST. In short, too much initial humor leads to PT comparisons, and I think he wants to establish that these new films are changing direction completely.

Rey: There are stories about what happened.
Han Solo: It's true. All of it. The Dark Side, the Jedi. They're real.

[Rey and Finn look at each other incredulously]

Rey: What are you going on about old man?
Finn: Yeah. Who cares about all that? Is it true you could get Deathsticks or Kessel Spice at any local Cantina?
