SPECULATION With this kind of response, there's no way RJ's trilogy is happening.

Before anyone attacks me, or gets upset. I only speak from my heart when it comes to Star Wars. It is so incredibly dear to me. I voice my opinion because I want the franchise to be the best that it can be, and I have personal standards when it comes to the entertainment industry. I openly do not support TLJ and believe it was an inappropriate addition to the franchise for many reasons. I know this has been discussed heavily on this forum, and I won't discuss that here, but I simply wanted to share a few snapshots of the first 3 pages of comments from a news site on an article about Rian Johnson defending his choices for TLJ. I did not skip any comments or pages, and they go on and on and on. When Disney looks through these types of sites and sees the response this film has gotten, and the backlash that has potentially affected Galaxy's Edge, Solo, and the potential entirety of the franchise; why would they possibly consider to proceed forward with giving RJ his own trilogy?

The article can be found here and is being shared on multiple news sites with the same response. There are pages and pages of these comments with rarely anything positive being said about the film.

Whether you like the film or not, from a business perspective, do you think Disney would really allow RJ to make three new films with this proof of backlash?

Bro' I get you but this is not the good place for this.

This is way to soon. Some people made a cult about this thing.

The Internet is a big place. Hell, my "inner circle" loves it and that doesn't discredit your "inner circle". I'd rather have Lucasfilm stick to the plan, then be reactionary every time a group of people hate it a product. You're just simply not gonna please everyone. I even like the Prequels as an example.

Yeah and I can say the same thing for the people who loved it. It doesn't discredit either opinion.

This entire thread is one gigantic baseless and overreactive troll post.

That's not to say that the OP is necessarily a troll, just that their conclusion is based on baseless and overreactive trolling by people who sadly didn't have anything better to do with their lives than level hate against a movie.

Please everyone keep in mind that this topic isn't to discuss whether or not you like or dislike TLJ.

The question is, with so much public dislike for the film, will he still get his trilogy? The unhappiness of fans and general viewers is obvious and overwhelming, which is why I used the screenshots of the comments section of that article. Will Disney look at this response and ignore it, or will they officially cancel his trilogy?

It's also worth considering that they may never actually cancel his trilogy, but it will simply never make it to production.

I do not know where you are getting tiny fragment from. The backlash is vast. Perhaps we will know for sure based on the financial performance of Episode IX.

This is not an accurate statement.

The TLJ and Rian Johnson "haters" do not represent anything more than the tiniest fraction of the overall Star Wars fandom community, and the box office numbers and critical reception of TLJ bear that out.

This is inaccurate because people that went to see TLJ in theaters hadn't seen TLJ before. :)

This site seems to be as pro Rian Johnson as it gets and even here the thread for people that hated the movie really had legs. I just did a google search on "Rian Johnson Star Wars" and looked for the first article that had comments on and again the comments were overwhelmingly negative. Star Wars does seem to me to be a franchise with a downward trend and TLJ is surely a good part of that. It could recover and it might, I personally think a Rian Johnson Trilogy is a bad idea and it doesn't seem to be coming soon, but studios can run with bad ideas so it could happen, but if Disney cares about profits and building a positive brand it won't. I'd say there are plenty of reasons to be sceptical.

The movie does indeed have a lot of haters, but as others have stated, there are still a lot of people who loved it too. I've talked to multiple people who really liked it. That's not to invalidate the people who didn't like it, but all the same, I don't think they represent the "general concensus", and certainly not because of a few online articles that got flooded with hate comments. Comments sections can just be flat-out toxic. I also remember how much hate the prequels got back in the day. This is no different. Heck, I've even heard that Empire Strikes Back got mixed reviews when it was first released.

That said, I'm sure Disney has heard the Last Jedi criticisms and will try to amend things with their Star Wars projects going forward, but I don't think that in itself means they need to dump Rian Johnson. As Andrew Waples stated above, you'll simply never make everyone happy. Personally, I hope his trilogy still happens. I would love to see what he does next.

Comments sections can be toxic but for movies that are generally loved they seldom are, but yes the Prequels too had plenty of negativity and still do, but I don't think this is no different, because the Prequels were created by the main creative force behind the original Star Wars George Lucas. Even then many people were glad for Lucas to go. Rian Johnson has nothing like Lucas' importance to Star Wars so he is far more expendable and given that he has only made one Star Wars movie and that a deeply divisive one, letting him go would not be a big deal and I'd say it'd be a good business decision.

Here's the thing, Kennedy has said Johnson is working with Benioff & Weiss in some way, so if his trilogy was cancelled, then he would have to some big incentive for him to stick around (like him getting a cut of Benioff/Weiss's movies' profits or something). If there isn't anything then it seems to me, he'd just walk away from all of it and someone else would give him money to make other movies (and I wouldn't put it past a Warner Bros or Universal offering him a chance to make another big budget movie too).

Well as of this article from about a week ago, it looks like his trilogy is still happening, although plans could still change.

Even before the Last Jedi backlash came about, I feel like they must've had a good reason for giving him his own trilogy in the first place. And even with all the hate, I think there'd still be a lot of genuine fan support as well. And Rian Johnson might be able to use the criticism as a learning opportunity for his next films. I'd be disappointed to see Disney cave in to what the haters want specifically. There'd be something admirable about Disney sticking to their guns on this, I think. Admittedly, though, it is easy for me to say that considering I'm in the "loved it" camp. And I suppose they don't need Johnson specifically; they could find someone else who's capable.

It's interesting that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were signed on to do their own series, and yet they too have come under a lot of fire lately. I'm likewise curious to see how their series will be affected.
