In this movie, yes. You act like he is dead though.

It's a fairy tale not science fiction! & I don't give a blast... seeing that giant red laser shoot out in front of a legion of FO troops was bad ass... & seeing how other systems could witness the laser travelling across the galaxy... damn!

Your Point is what the thread asks for my gripes but hey good point about the light being scene across the galaxy shouldnt have seen that either...oh also some Science still applies after all gravity clearly works since they are not floating while on planets.

Look the Deathstar at least had far less grating issues.

Overall I enjoyed the movie; I was dreading a short Luke scene with no dialog, but they made it work.

It felt a bit cheap for R2 to just wake up out of the blue. Even a ridiculous explanation would be better than no explanation at all.. (e.g. Luke turned him on from afar via the Force, it took years for him to decrypt the map in low power mode, he recognized Rey, or whatever.)

I also could've used a bit more dialog explaining what Hosnian Prime was and why it was significant. After Hux's speech about destroying the Senate, along with the architecture on the planet, I assumed it was Coruscant.

My gripes with the movie: Rey's sudden and unexplained mastery of force mind control, mind reading and everything else. This is the one and only thing that still bugs me about the movie. Everything else I ca live with and the movie was great.

Yeah... the creature/ freighter sequence... ugh. Snoke too... what was up with Serkis saying that the facial structure is something very non-human ish? They shoulda just gotten someone from the Walking Dead series to do his face.

I like Driver though... I wouldn't say he's very hipster-ish. To me Kylo Ren seems like he'd Prim & Pampered but psychotic much in the same way a primed gladiator might be... I really like that dichotomy. I find it fascinating how Vader became evil by accident while Kylo Ren is really seeking evil out.

Would it be sacrilege to say that I think Ren is more menacing than Vader? Not in terms of who is more powerful, but whom I find to be a more disturbing personality.

I would say Ren is only more menacing in the sense that he be worse to work for in that Vader only force chokes you to death when u screw up or you talk back to him. Ren is having a bad day and those stormtroopers ran away because Kylo would probably kill you just because his day sucked.

Ren is more diabolical for sure. He was actively looking for the absolute worst deed he can do to guarantee his fall into darkness, like a complete parallel of Luke Skywalker. I really wonder how much this cut of the film changed. There was probably a hell of a lot more filmed considering Luke is literally in the film as many seconds as I have fingers and toes lol.

I agree with a lot of peoples gripes but two of my minorest are the lack of new ship designs and how tiny the Resistance was, It felt like a small galaxy.

Yeah good point... I was very disappointed by lack of cool ship designs... a hallmark of Star Wars. I'm sure things will get more epic as they move along.

Although... wasn't one of the canonized aspects of this universe that Mon Mothma wanted the New Republic (/ what I'm guessing is the resistance... so confused) to have a leaner military force?

The thing about the resistance is why in the world is the New Republic and The whole Republic Fleet (Ignore the Fact that no Fleet is ever at the same location at the same time) getting wiped out so fast. Really the Resistance has a few x-wings while the First Order has Star Destroyers...come on JJ so mirroring is fine but we dont need to copy so many beats.

I agree. I thought there was going to be more ships in the movie that were kept secret. But no it was mostly tie fighters and xwings

Sorry I meant no hostility, just saying Star Wars has never been about scientific accuracy... especially considering every scene with a ship flying in space has sound (haha).

I kind of like how that scene just came out of nowhere and was like "boom! here is a big laser being shot & bye bye giant populated world we've never heard of". I understand the complaint, but personally for me it helps make the galaxy feel bigger if the massacre of a densely populated planet is not worthy of more than a moments' worth of dialogue. There was a lot of ground to cover in this film!

I thought that was a great shot, watching the cold glare of Hux looking up at the laser as it fires with William's haunting music playing... & then seeing the inhabitants of Hosnian Prime freaking out. I loved the alien on the left in particular... that's a cool species design. I dunno, I felt emotional watching that scene, it was very dark & intense. & oh man... JJ wasn't kidding when he said that he wanted Hux to be "ruthless"!

Ah no I get it but I am Engineer...I am fine with allowing stuff like FTL, Long Distance communication, etc but some stuff just crosses the line and a weapon that powers itself by draining Stars yeah no....and even if I ignore the science it still doesnt make sense to convert a whole planet into a weapon that cant move and can only be fired a few times before the Star burns out and you cant fire it again.

Well my problem was the audience cant have a reaction to Hossian Prime because the characters dont I mean you expect to see the Resistance gutted their whole fleet got wiped out and surely some had family and friends in the sector. There was no personal connection unlike when Alderaan bites it or hey Vulcan in Star Trek.

The worst part of the movie by far was the R2D2 deus ex machina "low power mode" BS!!!!

    WTF???

The whole point of the movie is finding Luke and R2's battery has been dead? Then he just gets better????

That was freaking awful and was greeted by a lot of booing and catcalls at my screening.

Probably the worst written part of any movie in the last 10 years.

Otherwise, I really, really loved the movie. I am glad JJ isn't directing the next one, but I think this one was fine. The little touches like the breathing masks from ESB or the rebellion strategic computers looking the same were great touches.

I actually respect them for addressing the "it's another Death Star" elephant in the room AND poking fun at it as well.

R2 magically coming back to life at the end just was awful.

R2 turning back on would have worked for me if you had Leia talking to R2 and crying while saying Han was killed by Ben boom easy fix

Definitely great shot and great scene. It provided a brief traumatic POV moment that we never got with Alderaan. I was just thrown for a loop by Hux's line about the Senate. For most viewers who remember anything about the PT or TCW, the Senate = Coruscant. I'm not even sure if anyone in the film ever says "Hosnian Prime." Somebody says something about the Hosnian System, but for all the casual viewer knows, Coruscant is a planet in the Hosnian System. And if Hosnian Prime was effectively the capital of the Republic, I would've expected more than a shoulder shrug from the Resistance crew. If they had cut out the line about the Senate it wouldn't have been so confusing.

I loved the film. The only flaw is that Starkiller Base is again so easily destoyed. I would have liked it if it was destroyed by a fleet from the orbit in a great attack or that the Ressistance was able to damage it only but couldnt destroy it. That would have shown that not all superweapons can be destroyed by a X-wing and they must find another way to deal with the SKB.

The only thing can think of and its a stretch is that Han said he made the kessel run in 12 parsects which is distance not time. Maybe he was referring to a hyperspace route not time. It's a huge stretch I know.
