A New Hope ~ Empire Strikes Back 10/10 (As good as any film ever made)
    The Force Awakens 8/10
    Return Of The Jedi 7.5/10
Revenge Of The Sith ~ The Last Jedi 7/10 (Must have a decent knowledge of SW lore and engage your brain a bit to really enjoy)
Rogue One 6/10 (let down by some crappy dialogue and a really shallow, uninteresting lead character)
    The Phantom Binks 4/10
Attack Of The Bad CGI 3/10

    My previous ranking: 1 - VII 2 - V 3 - III 4 - VI 5 - Rogue One 6 - VI 7 - I 8 - II

Post-TLJ I think The Force Awakens suffers. JJ kind of threw together the forceback at the end of production. It doesn't really fit the story going forward. Maybe he'll tie some of that into IX, but it's kind of an odd thing to look back on now that TLJ is out.

    1 - The Last Jedi
    2 - Empire Strikes Back
    3 - The Force Awakens
4 - Revenge of the Sith
    5 - A New Hope
    6 - Rogue One
7 - Return of the Jedi
    8 - The Phantom Menace
9 - Attack of the Clones

I love Star Wars! I don't know where Han Solo will end, usually for me prequelesque movie end up in the B+ category, the only exception being RO of course. But I'd like to be surprised. It might be a narrative tour de force.

Well, when you think about it, they are very similar to Star Wars movies in narrative set up and thematic content.

I knew you didn't like Rogue One, but I didn't realize it was that low. I think Rogue One will suffer over time. The first couple of acts of that film are a chore to sit through. K2S0 is the best part of re-watching it.

I came around to it lately and I appreciate some elements to it. I just don’t really care for the main character as I find the actress to be quite cold. I also think a SW film without the Jedi lore lacks in the mythological underpinning that draws me to the saga films. I also find these stories (at least in concept - I’m looking at you “Solo”) to be pointless and that they can only diminish the films they are wedged in between.

But overall I do like RO now and would give it a solid 7 out of 10. I actually rate both TFA and AOTC as a 7 as well but they just had these extra elements and scenes that make the experience of watching them more memorable. And that will be the problem with RO as you imply. It’s a bit of a filler movie that depends totally upon ANH to have any real depth and significance. I think these standalones will be films that, at best, can be enjoyed upon release but then they’ll fade into the background. I’m certainly worried about Solo as I just cannot see the need for it, how new Han can ever live up to Ford’s portrayal and the potential of disappointing fans by showing events that played out pretty great in our imaginations already!

Back to TLJ, I keep going over it in my mind and questioning whether it is, for me, better than TESB: a film I can watch over and over and love every single second of. TLJ certainly has some weaker moments and the script isn’t as tight. But the power and emotion of numerous scenes in TLJ l, right now, put it on top for me.

Honestly I dont see how this movie will be ranked in 2 or 3 years after the hype dies down, but for me ,even now, its down at the bottom with Clones and Phantom.
And personally I enjoy Phantom and Clones way more, for nostalgic reasons-- but thast just me.

That bad humor in VIII just killed the movie for me, it almost felt like James Gunn ghost-wrote the script.

    1) + 2) ANH & ESB Too close to tell.
    3) The Last Jedi.
    4) ROTJ
    5) TFA
    6) RO
    7) ROTS
    8) TPM
    9) AOTC

I predict many a fan who was left shocked, angry or let down by TLJ to like it better on repeat viewings. No other SW film, apart from the Tunesia scenes in ANH maybe, show such great cinemathography as TLJ.

Well ESB has some weaker moments as well but we've become insensitized to them. We grew up with that movie and often fail to look at it and judge it in the same manner as we do the new movies.

The intertextual aspect of TLJ (how the movie relates to what has come before and what it does with it) and its emotional qualities, as you mentioned, make it for me the ultimate Star Wars movie: it surpasses ESB because it does something with ESB. Empire Strikes Back never really did that with ANH. It is a paradigm changer, because I'll never look at the Star Wars movies in the same way again. I look at the originals in a completely different manner now, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Vader, Obi Wan so many new narrative and emotional layers added to these characters. So many new layers provided to events in the previous movies. This all next to a narrative that is original and expertly written with new characters that have never had such depth in a Star Wars movie: Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren.

It is a difficult movie to understand: a sign perhaps that Star Wars is becoming a bit 'high brow'. It considers the existing star wars audience audience to be very smart and treats the new audiences with care.
