In my opinion, if the characters are doing and saying too many things with an obvious, blatant, and sometimes word for word reference to a previous film, it can get old and tiring, and the reference to previous films loses it's value and charm. The continuation of a character can be overdone. I find that too much fan service is distracting and it takes me out of the film I'm watching.

    Its movie 7.

    a thousand books
    10k or so comics
    a mmo
    a billion dollar toy franchise
    several branded toasters

at what point does the fan service cross the line

I get what you are saying but you are predisposing yourself to hate this. There will be similarities and many nods to the OT.

True... however, in the same line of thought, people have natural tendencies to say things... it would be normal for them to use their common phrases. Depends on how its done... look at how many times "I've got a bad feeling about this" is used in the OT

No, I'm not predisposing myself to hate TFA, and I'm not talking about merchandise. I'm not talking about common phrases either. Actually, I'm not even talking about fan service in any of the existing Star Wars films.

This line of discussion started with the mention of Star Trek films. I loved both of JJ's Trek films, but I did think the fan-service went a bit too far, most of it being in Into Darkness. A prime example would be Spock yelling Khan.

I don't like excessive in your face fan-service being overly used in films, and I'm hoping JJ and crew tone that sort of thing down a bit for TFA.

For me, subtle and occasional bits of fan service can really be entertaining and sometimes very funny, but when overdone, it's detracts from my enjoyment of a film. This is simply my opinion, my pet peeve.:D

That kind of thing happens a WHOLE lot in Clone Wars and Rebels. With, "It's a trap!" and "To the chopper!" and many more

I think they felt way more like Star Trek and way more like modern action movies with moments being stretched out for too long and action sequences being that extra bit too long to make them seem longer than they actually are.

Star Wars or more directly George Lucas movies don't do that to that degree. Certainly in Star Wars the actions sequences besides using lots of daylight so often also leave me wanting more as opposed to many movies including JJ's where it's like OK let's move on.

A fine balance to be sure.

I've never seen any of J.J Abrams's work (except Regarding Henry, but I'm not sure if that counts!), but this thread has filled me with hope that he will make a good job of episode 7.

I saw a gif set today in which Sam Witwer gave some advice for fans to follow when they go and see the film for the first time: he said for them to "watch the movie they're actually giving you rather than the movie you want in your head." Sound, but difficult to follow fully.

It's great to see that Abrams loves Star Wars so much, though, and that he cares about what other fans think- it's nice to know that the movie has, literally, come from the head of a fan rather than just someone brought in who only cares about the box office.

I believe that JJ will make the best episode 7 over anyone else.
But I really hope that after GL directing Episodes 1-4, that Disney pushes for episodes 5-9 (7-9 buy Dis) to be directed buy different directors. I really like the fact that they are grabbing up the hottest and the best up and coming talent \m/

But when episode 7 rakes in 3 billion, they just might offer 9 to JJ.......

3D sucks and is being held together by a bandaid by the studios.

There are two types of 3D... one makes the images pop out at you, and is/was/always will be a fad, and the other is screen back, which adds depth, and is a pretty decent tool

I kind of like the one where things pop out at you. I usually can't see the 3D, I'm not sure if it's because I'm partially colour blind or that I wear glasses.

But I would prefer not to wear the 3D glasses.

I was initially weary when J.J. was announced as director since Into Darkness was pretty bad in my opinion, but looknig back on it, the direction wasn't an issue at all - it was all the writing. I'm sure Arndt and Kasdan put together something good, and much of my excitement comes from how excited Mark Hamill seems in interviews. I'm not worried.

I agree, but the current problem with 3D is how dark it is with the glasses, which is an issue of current projection technology, along with increased strobing. Hopefully laser projection will be adopted more, which really helps with the brightness part. Higher frame rates help with the strobing, but that introduces a whole other debate.
