Thats exactly how I feel about rebels.. "To the chopper" has been said how many times? also, "Its a trap" ? as much as I love the series, It's gotten a little tiresome.

I watched about 15 mins of the first episode. I should watch more to catch canon, but I don't like the animation style. Same with TCW. I read random EU books, but it's easy to picture it as more of a live cinematic experience. Even more recent books still spend a lot of words repeating all the common phrases.

I went back and forth on if this was "ontopic" or not for this topic. But its about J.J. and how he is editing the movie so I though I would go ahead and post it here. Yes I was the original poster of it, if someone might of seen it on another board last night.

I don't know if anyone really cares about it, but I find this fairly interesting.
I got an email from a software editing company about a webinar about the editors at bad robot, they specifically mentioned that they were working on star wars. So I decided to load it up and see if anything good came out of it. (This was from a few months ago)

It was not very much, however I did get some fairly interesting tidbits about it.

    1) J.J. does not do first cuts. According to his two editors, he cannot sit through it, so they basically mine through it all, and he comes in periodically to do a sequence here or there and eventually sits down and watches a cut (Probably Second cut or Third cut) once Post-Production started.

    2) He shoots a TON of footage, I think one of the assistant editors said its close to 16+ hours of footage a day.

    3) J.J. is somewhat hands off during editing. He lets the editors go through footage and pick what they think is better.

4)J.J. also when editing likes to have sound as close as final as possible. (So Temp music, etc).

    5) Temp music wise, they used John Williams music editor, for the temp music before the score is recorded.

    6) J.J (which I think most people know this) Never stops working and moving. They said when they get to the first studio screening, they will still be cutting till about 10 - 15 minutes before they export it.

    7) They edit in a 5.1 soundtrack mix during Post-production. So they make a temp mix, and basically edit the film in 5.1 for the best sounding movie. Instead of adding it later.

    8) They were shooting in 4 cameras, with two separate units at the height of production.

    9) During Post, J.J. more often then not, is in contact with the actors, and has them Re-record lines to send them in to him during Editing, and then will replace them later.

    10) Right now, they are in the heavy visual effects part of editing, so they are receiving finished shots, or close to finished and sending them back to ILM for screenings, which might be 3 or 4 times a week.

    11) The editors are the keepers of ALL of the footage. So Marketing wise, they have to go through editing to get what they want. The only place that has the full movie, shot-for-shot, is at Bad Robot in LA. All footage that is released to other editors for trailers and TV spots, are Watermarked and Prepped in a certain way so It won't be leaked.

    12) If there are any major "potholes" that need to be filled, the editors Tell J.J. (sometimes multiple times). They have shot little scenes or inserts as late as 3 weeks before the picture was locked.

I know there was not anything too "juicy" but as a Movie nerd, and interested in movie production I found it fascinating. It also might give us a bit of a look into what might be happening on a weekly basis as December gets closer.

EDIT: I forgot to mention in that post last night, something that I found really unique. The editors basically split the movie half in half. So One day, One editor might focus on dialogue and drama scenes, the other Action and much longer "big" sequences. They trade off every day.

I have a question about #9. Do they really have the actors record lines and send them?

I thought they would just go to the studio and record lines?

I think they would have to go to a soundproof environment with professional equipment. This isn't a home movie indie, after all....

Depends on the Moviemaker, Interstellar had some issues with sound in certain theatres.

For his approach Interstellar got a nomination for sound editing and sound mixing.

It could just mean that they go into a recording studio in the city they live in and then send it. No need for Boyega to fly from London to Hollywood to record one line when there are hundreds of places to do that in London, etc...

I think it's more placeholder. Because one of the assistants said "we would then go in and replace it"

That makes me think that j.j. Might have them re-record something on an iPhone and then when ADR happens they then replace it.

I like how JJ doesn't look at rough cuts if he can help it, he's purely interested in the final product and keeping it as fresh as possible for when he watches it.
