The British accent represents the core world, most notably Coruscant and even more importantly: The Jedi.
Listen to Obi-Wan talk in the prequels (or better yet in Star Wars Rebels where they go really overboard with it)
Leia had a faint British sounding accent, though less pronounced, as did Obi-Wan in ANH.

I know that but if somebody dislikes an accent is based on personal experience and those don't match the gffa. So for example: if a viewer associates "posh" or "texas" it doesn't tell us something about a character in Star Wars, there it is just an accent.

I live in a big city. It's the way of the world here. Tons of my friends have American accents but their parents have Irish, German, Lithuanian, Indian and you name it accents. I have one friend who lived in Ireland until she was 5 or so, moved to the US with her parents and as an adult moved back to Ireland. Her accent is a weird Irish/American hybrid and her parents are full-on Irish.

And adding to that, there could be a mother/daughter or mother/son theme going on here, instead of just a father/son theme. It's interesting to me how people's opinions of Leia have changed a lot since the trailer and posters have come out. People hardly mentioned her before, and now it's like "Whoa, General Leia!" I know some people thought Carrie might not be able to pull it off, but it appears she has.

When the last trailer dropped, most of the tweets in my Twitter timeline were about that half-second of Leia. I'm so happy she's getting some attention, no one was really talking about Leia before.

I will admit to being in the camp that was worried most about Fisher not being able to pull it off. Her presence though seems spot on, but I don't think we have heard her actually delivering lines so I am still not 100% there. Even Hamill I am a bit worried about as he has mostly done voice acting since his SW days and the few actual movie roles he has had were less than stellar.

I think they are actually going for similar associations.

I'm a second- generation American and my colleagues would call me "Natasha" because I had a lingering accent. I've never even been to Slovenia where my grandparents were from. And they had passed away by the time I was born, so I got it from my native-born Dad. It was even stronger when I was a teenager, my speech & debate coach could easily hear it. Accents are malleable, but they can reveal much.

At any rate, there's a reason for all of this, of that I'm sure.

It is the way of the world, indeed. Accents aren't genetic, they're environmental. Moreover, accents are pretty flexible into one's adulthood and even the most conservative speakers can change their ways of speaking over time.

So, if it's a filmmaking choice, it may have to do with where and how Rey was raised. Worth considering: Who else is on Jakku, and where are they from? Scavengers and gangsters, none of whom we've heard speak. People seem to think Jakku is where Max von Sydow's character resides, and Sydow's is a distinctly Swedish accent, though he's done roles, apparently, in a dozen languages, so...

I hope not. Some of the tropes of the prequels were quite awful, like the Chinese sales man of the trade federation and this terrible Boss Nass pseudo jamaican accents. We need less of those earthly prejudices, and Kenobi had a english accent without being evil. Leia fell out of her accent so many times but it didn't really matter.
The viewer is not that stupid we don't need the wink, oh this guy is evil cuz british, let their deeds tell the story.

    I wasn't going for evil.
Just the "posh" priviledged core world accent (with possible Jedi ties) And the more free roaming, adventurous Outer Rim types.
    Aka: Leia and Han

Ithink we have heard Leia in the trailers. I won't get into that again but I'm not alone in that thinking- it's buried in the trailer thread. I've always been more concerned about Hamill but I am confident none of the OT heroes are in this movie for nostalgia alone. Before the trailers, I was pretty sure TPTB wouldn't tarnish their memories or do a disservice to the fans AND actors by just including them for old time's sake. Now that I've seen the trailers, I'm more sure of that. I think they're all up to the task and it will be even more awesome because no one has seen Mark or Carrie on screen since a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....

You could be right. I am on the fence about what I think you were talking in regards to us having already heard Leia in the trailer. You are referring to the last line of the trailer from the US version being from Leia? It could be, and it was delivered very well. If it is her line then yeah it does point to her pulling it off. I do agree with your point about the actors from the OT being more than just nostalgia nods and it seems both the actors themselves and the production crew is making absolutely sure that is not the case. And that is very admirable in a time where a lot of classic properties are mined for money on the premise of capitalizing on nostalgia and the unfortunate first thing they do is just phone it in without any real regard to quality and actually honoring what imbued with the quality they are trying to exploit.

    Yes, that's the line.

I take a bird's eye view of this whole story, we fans have such a tendency to get down into the weeds on everything. Jj and KK are far too smart to mess with Our Heroes. (Which is why Luke, incidentally, is not now or ever going to be a bad guy, or why Han and Leia will never marry and have kids with anyone but each other, I don't care what some comic book insinuates). So they're going to do an awesome job with the Big Three, because if they don't every Gen Xer and half the Boomers in America will despise them forever and ever.

I wouldn't want to ruin the childhood heroes for so many people, would you?

Leia is not going to have a British accent. She never had one except in one scene where it was clear she couldn't do it so they dropped that whole idea.

I agree completely, let's mix it up a little.

I'm thinking a Sith Lord with a southern accent.
    That would be interesting.
