I’m hoping this isn’t the only outfit Rey wears in Episode IX. I’m kind of sick of the triple-bun look — although this one’s a lot cleaner and looks better than The Force Awakens outfit for sure. I liked her outfit she wore in the second half of The Last Jedi and was hoping she’d wear her hair like that again.

That being said, I saw an article that speculated on this and I thought it made sense. What if her outfit is so similar to the one from The Force Awakens because she has scenes with Carrie Fisher that were too hard to make work without Rey looking like she did in The Force Awakens? If they had to manipulate the footage at all, it would be MUCH easier to do so if Rey’s outfit in Episode IX resembled what she wore in The Force Awakens. Just a thought, though.

Just watching TFA there were rumours of a scene filmed with Rey and Leia at the end of the film. But at the end of the film Rey is neither on Jakku and not in Jakku gear. In fact I don't think Leia is ever on Jakku. Am sure they can manipulate scenes no problem these days but the whole dessert gear being used for this excuse to me sounds a bit iffy. The buns / balls I get. But the costume? Just be honest and says she wearing because she's on a dessert.

That comes from a rumor from Making Star Wars for whatever it's worth.

Todd Fisher, brother of Carrie Fisher: “They have arranged it in the script and what was shot to bring [Carrie Fisher as Leia] into the story [of Star Wars: Episode IX] in a way as if they filmed it yesterday. Isn’t that magical, that the things that she shot a few years ago are frozen in time, so to speak, and been reborn into the final ‘Star Wars’ where she is the character that needed to continue?” “It is not just me as a brother, I have a connection to this thing that is different but I am also a fan of the story line, but it is my sister. My sister and Princess Leia are the same thing. And the idea of that story stopping and her not carrying forward is very disturbing to me. I kept saying to people, ‘No, no, this needs to continue.’ I know I was even a little annoying to Disney. I kept saying from the brother’s perspective we would want to see Carrie continue, of course. And the fans, I think, we could even use the word demand this to carry on. It is awesome that it worked out this way and thanks to [‘Episode IX’ director] J.J. Abrams. This is going to be very magical and important to us all.” “As you know, when you make a movie there are lot of things that end up, as they say, on the cutting room floor. Outtakes — a lot of things that don’t make it into the movie sometimes. In this case, it was difficult for people to want to go back to look at every frame of footage to see what was usable or what could be used in this fashion and then to create a way to weave it into the script… it is not an easy task.” “[My sister’s daughter, actress Billie Lourd,] is really sensitive to the whole thing… obviously we want to protect Carrie… and we are sensitive to how things are done and why they are done. This is one that you have got to embrace with a big hug.” (July 28, 2018)

Todd Fisher: “[What hints has J. J. Abrams given you as to the footage used for Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX?] There are things we know that I can’t say. [..] No, we’re not allowed to talk much further than that. I can stay in the area we’re in but not into too many specifics. But yeah I was given some information about the things that were there but I can’t address it. Suffice it to say that you’ve seen what was in the – what was the name of the last film? Not the most recent one – but the one [before] The Last JediThe Force Awakens. So all of this footage obviously was shot around The Force Awakens so if you look at all the scenes that were in The Force Awakens you can kind of imagine some things that could be made available (grins). I think one of the all time greatest scenes – well one of my favorite things Carrie’s ever done – is the last movie and when she says, ‘May the Force be with you,’ I mean it’s (heartstrings hand gestures) like, you know, so those words – you are hanging on them. So there’s a lot of those words and it’s some of her best acting. I can tell you in my view and I’ve known her since she didn’t know anything about acting, it’s remarkable, she’s really killing it.” (July 28, 2018)

Leia: "Rey. May the Force be with you." (there was more to this scene in the novelizations and other re-tellings)

Todd Fisher: “I couldn’t be more personally thrilled and happy that our Carrie will reprise her role as Princess Leia in the new and final ‘Star Wars Episode IX,’ using previously unreleased footage of her shot for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As we, her family, as well as her extended family of fans around the world so believe, Carrie’s ‘Princess Leia’ is forever entrenched in the franchise and her indelible presence is fundamental to the film. J.J. Abrams understood Carrie’s iconic role, and he has masterfully re-crafted this final entry to include this unused and very last footage of Carrie ever taken, without resorting to CGI or animatronics. Our family and her fans will look forward with great anticipation for this one!” (July 28, 2018)

Todd Fisher: “J.J. [Abrams] really made [Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX] happen.” “If I was in anyway an inspiration for the final decision to keep Leia a part of the story, that’s great. I must say at times I felt like a voice crying in the wilderness.” (July 28, 2018)

Todd Fisher: (paraphrase) “There are big surprises coming – with this movie [Star Wars: Episode IX], and with this performance and with this unused footage [of Carrie Fisher as Leia] – This one is really for the fans.” (August 3, 2018)

Maryann Brandon has returned as the editor of Star Wars Episode IX. These were her deleted-from-video comments about The Force Awakens.

Maryann Brandon: (48:30) “I know… It’s a weird thing that [hug between Rey and Leia], isn’t it? It’s like sometimes you’re working on a movie and there’s this thing that’s really powerful and you can’t really explain it. Like the hug between them is really powerful and you’re like, ‘Well, I didn’t see that coming.’ The lack of Chewie at the end was a big discussion and I think you know we did the best we could because that’s what was shot and you’re absolutely 100% right like… your emotion is with Chewie because he’s like this great character who always saves the day. Ummm… You know it’s one of those… I mean we tried to cover it up. But I guess the thing is what we tried to do is have Chewie go with Finn to try and make sure Finn’s OK and Leia went for Rey. The whole idea there I think is that they have a special connection that they don’t even know about. There was an earlier idea at one point that Leia knows who [Rey] is. And we sort of took that out because it didn’t make any sense. Um… because we don’t know who she is! So that’s what I’m talking about – you just kind of keep – things just evolve and you go, ‘that’s not a good idea, that is a good idea.’ ‘Keep that,’ or ‘Lose that’.” (May 15, 2016 – this video has edited out this part since its original posting)

There is also the rumored subplot of Leia and the 'Sledgehammer' that was omitted from the final cut of the The Force Awakens.

Thanks to you both for your input! I really appreciate it (especially @MagnarTheGreat for compiling all that information). This certainly helps to clarify a little bit. Like I said, I just thought it made sense. The initial report I saw was from ComicBook.com or something like that, so it wasn’t a super reliable source — and again, their article was completely speculative. It’s an interesting idea (and I would LOVE to see more Rey/Leia interactions), but I’m not expecting that (or anything else). I don’t want to get my hopes up. I just want to be surprised with whatever happens when Episode IX comes out. :)

I think the biggest mistake of the sequel trilogy was making Rey, the main protagonist, a mysterious character. Mysterious doesn't always equal interesting. I didn't know what her motivation was in regards to her joining the resistance. She never stated that she believed in their cause, we had to assume. She never stated or implied she wanted to be a "jedi", it was more of "Oh well, I have these force powers and I guess that's what people with force powers do is become a jedi". The only clear motivation/desire she expressed was to have her parents back. I have no qualms with her wanting a family, I just want her choice in joining the resistance and her becoming a jedi be a bold active choice instead of this "happenstance" in a form of her choice.

I really hope in Episode IX, that Rey's motivation is clearly defined and her actions are bold and heroic. I truly want her to be the heroin that we loudly cheer for at the end of the movie. I just want to see what is her "place in all of this".

She's an orphan, Luke was orphaned in the first act of IV, we didn't learn Luke was Darth's son until the end of V, that she had a sister until VI. I thought her struggles were different, what happened to her seemed more internal and organic. Her character isn't an open book, is James Bond? What did we know about Ben Kenobi? She suddenly finds a connection to powers she didn't know even existed... I think that's motivation enough. She wants to fight the dark side... seemed to be enough of a motivation for Luke. What I like about Rey is that, the powers she has don't seem to be at risk of going bad, she seems very clear about her connection.

I'm hoping there's some great twists and reveals in the final chapter... I'm ok with not finding out until this one.

Daisy Ridley does a fine job in the role but her character is nowhere near as interesting as Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. I find more enjoyment in the ST when I view it as Kylo Ren’s story. When looking at it this way, the ST is still very much a continuation of the Skywalker saga. So I don’t need Rey to be a Skywalker. I’m happy with Kylo carrying on the Skywalker legacy.

I am totally ok with what is revealed about Rey in TLJ. Snoke explains that Rey is the Force’s counterbalance to Kylo Ren. I don’t need more than that. This makes her a messianic character similar to Anakin. I actually like the idea of a nobody being chosen by the will of the Force to accomplish great things. I think Rey may be charged with the task of ending the Skywalkers for good by killing Kylo Ren. This would make an interesting conflict for Rey to have to deal with.

    J. J. Abrams: “[Will Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker scrap or build off the Rey parentage reveal of Star Wars: The Last Jedi?] The challenge of this movie was obviously taking eight movies and telling a satisfying conclusion. So it was not just ‘Episode VIII,’ but ‘Episodes I’ through ‘XIII’ [Note: probably a typo for VIII] that we had to really consider and embrace." (April 13, 2019)

Q: Are we going to find out who Rey's parents are?
    JJA:
I will say that we knew going into this that this movie [Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker] it had to be a satisfying conclusion and we were well aware that that's one of the things that's sort of been out there. I don't want to say to what happens in Episode VIII we have honored that, but I will say that there's more to the story than you've seen. (April 12, 2019)

I mentioned this elsewhere, but I wish Daisy had demurred when Stephen Colbert asked her about Rey's arsenal in the film because it would've been awesome for the trailer to start and "bam, lightsaber money shot out of nowhere".

Rey and Leia are very close in their embrace once again, maybe closer than the last time? Could Leia be saying "I couldn't stand anything happening to you?" Also, with this being the last, and Rey being the Jedi hero, could she end up experiencing first hand the true power of the dark side? AKA force lightning?
