I suspect a character played by another actor might return from the quest who "used to be" Baylan Skol.

Just a straight recasting isn't out of the question either. They may well have done so already.

 

The easiest solution would be to re-cast a body-double and, in the well-established Star Wars villains tradition, slap a mask on the him that hides the face and twists the voice. Then have stand-in Baylan do something narratively importance to kick off the next stage of the overall plot, and hand the torch over to someone else (Shin Hati presumably) as they perish in a blaze of glory. Basically, give the character a face-less dramatic end that escalates everything and gives the character a proper send-of.

The alternative – to continue the character’s arc in a big way with a different actor – might just be too painful and difficult to pull off, and to give him some sort of climatic way out, and then move on, is probably the cleanest solution here. After all, we will never get Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll back, and any attempt to continue the character without Stevenson is doomed to be inferiorly received.

In any case, I think they should address Baylan's end, rather then just have him evaporate from the story. He is not really an important character – being a side character in a spin-off show with... Idunno, 10 minutes of screen time? – and whatever story beats he was intended to have going forward can easily be given to someone else, but seeing as Baylan/Ray was so warmly welcomed by the critics and fandom and, well everyone, they should definitelly address it all, somehow.

 

It shouldn't hurt that much if the choice of actor is good.

 

Bylan had the 4th largest screen time of the show. About 34 minutes worth of badassery.

I'm for recasting. I don't get why Star Wars is so afraid of recasting... For Bylan there are some good choices. For example: Liev Schreiber has the looks and acting skills.

But even out of the box actors like Viggo Mortenson or Michael C. Hall could work.

 

Star Wars fans have a love affair with cool side characters, for instance; Boba Fett, in this case I'd like Shin to bring us up to speed with what happened to Baylan, since they were connected through the force, and Shin takes over the role.
