Gone with the wind may be, but all I know for sure is that it's number 1 when adjusted for inflation.
As for tickets sold I think that that loses a lot of the economic factors that influence movie success. For instance Japan does things that way and so the new Yo-Kai watch film beat TFA there since it sold more tickets, even though TFA made more money. Since children's tickets cost less, people are more willing to go to a children's film than a full priced one.
Similarly if people are willing to pay for an IMAX ticket I think it should be reflected in the film's determination of success.
And of course, which do the studios actually care about? ; )

That last line is the most important point. They didn't start keeping track of box office totals for the public, it was industry information. It's wasn't until the mid-80s that the general public started treating sales figures like baseball box scores.

It missed passing Jurassic World's full domestic run by 300, 000 dollars in the calendar year.

    Almost...

but no cigar. TFA is that big of a juggernaut

    It will pass today though.

Talking about and entire RUN of Jurassic World's domestic run when the film opened on the 18th, lol

In many foreign countries price on tickets are the same, but dollar itself is more expensive, so if we were in 2013 or so, gross already was a twice time bigger in some places ( in dollars)) (duel)Just saying))

TFA has grossed in its first full week $390.8M domestically. In its second full week, it has grossed $261.1M domestically. Due to the Christmas holidays, that is a decrease of merely 33%, which is good for a blockbuster. In comparison, Avengers and Jurassic World had decreases around 50% in their second weeks. The trajectories for Titanic and Avater were unusual. They had both small increases.

Furthermore, all the daily receipts so far have been bigger than any other blockbuster (except for the second day on which TFA made $68.2M and Jurassic World $69.6M). TFA is still extending its lead over Avatar. Avatar had grossed $25.2M, $25.8M and $17.3M on its third Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Let's see whether TFA can continue extending its lead this weekend.

I wonder if it can hold out and surpasses Avatar globally. I really wish it would.

The numbers are mind-boggling. If TFA sticks to a 30% week-to-day drop*, then it is on track to pull in about 1.25 billion domestic. If it does that, and China gets factored in, then Avatar's WW record is in serious jeopardy.

Even if it shifts to a 50% week-to-day drop, it will most likely end up at 1 billion domestic.

    * example would be Monday this week versus Monday previous week. TFA has so far had only one big drop - 58.6% on its second Friday (because the first Friday was the open and included a bunch of Thursday night/all night revenue). Second biggest drop was 30.1%; all others between 16 and 29 percent.

The Hollywood Reporter has an article on adjusted for inflation. What is funny is that the media is going suddenly wild on the adjusted for inflation stuff. Never before have I seen the media so crazy about it. It looks like Star Wars is so massive domestically that suddenly there is a reason.
Lots of Avatar lovers claim the 3D is causing SW to beat it adjusted even domestically. So the question wasn't Avatars big selling point 3D? I want to know the tale of Avatar vs TFA in 3D viewing. This is all crazy and I think TFA started something here with being the first film with an outside chance at 1billion domestic. Alot of it has to do with the fact that it was gone for so many years. I am talking about the original SW feel, the original actors etc. The film is really a great film IMHO and I love the opening scene with Ren landing.

Anyone know how much Avatar took in on 3D?

I'm not sure how much Avatar took in on 3D but it was the 3D technology of the film that was the reason most people went to see the movie
