I'd be okay with $945 million. Want it to get into the top 10 all-time domestic adjusted. But 11th certainly ain't too shabby.

I'm pretty sure the adjusted list is WAY inflated and not representative of realistic comparison.

    It's already #1 domestically.

Adjusted is based on ticket price inflation and is actually a very good gauge. However, yes #10 all time would be cool. It needs 948 to pass Snow White. Titanic is the only film since 1982 to get top ten.

Its based on ticket sales. Granted, yes, I think there is some unfair comparison to current standards as there are far more things that have our attention and our money today in comparison to Gone With the Wind (which sold 202 million tickets) and Snow White (which sold 109 million tickets). (Star Wars has sold 101 million tickets to date.) Plus you know, home video and all of that. I'm just saying I think it would be cool for TFA to fall in the top 10 adjusted films.

It's not, though; it doesn't consider lots of factors that have changed since the early 1900s. It's damn near impossible to account for the differences of 70+ years in terms of marketing, home video releases, ease of access, competition, and a plethora of other variables. The market has changed too much to make a useful comparison with simply adjusting for inflation....

I'd love to see it hit as high as possible domestically, but it seems like more than 920M+ is really pushing it, unless we see another spike.

900+ is damn fine by me anyways.

One interesting thing to consider in terms of number of tickets sold:

Box Office Mojo currently estimates that Avatar sold 97.2 million tickets domestically.

In 2010, back when Avatar hit DVD, Box Office Mojo estimated that Avatar sold 75 million tickets domestically.

The difference? Now, Box Office Mojo estimates it based on the average ticket price in the year it was released. In 2010, BOM estimated based on Avatar's heavy 3D/IMAX viewing, which skews towards more expensive tickets.

IMO, the 2010 numbers are much closer to correct for Avatar. Those numbers only put Avatar in the top 30 in tickets sold domestically. IMO, if TFA is re-released in the future (a good time would be two to three months before Episode VIII), it will sell more tickets than Avatar worldwide, if it hasn't done so already.

I wouldn't be shocked if TFA aid re-released in next year like how ANH was released a year or so after the first release except with ANH stacked in .

I completely agree with all of this, it's an apple-to-oranges comparison with any movie that was made before 2010, in my opinion, and even more difficult the further back one goes. The competition for viewers from all different sources and the different mediums for viewing during the lifetime of a film have changed so dramatically. Plus, there is inflation and a growing population of viewers to account for. After a while, the number of variables just makes it a tiresome exercise.

I do think that the quick transition from almost exponential growth to a flatter curve means that the next movie will have a little tougher row to hoe. The massive goodwill and nostalgia factors played out right away, but WOM just didn't seem to keep the numbers for TFA climbing domestically, IMHO.

However, more objectively, it's good that TFA cost half of what Avatar did to make, so it's been wildly profitable- not to mention the toys which is where the money really is. I'm happy with that because it ensures more SW movies in the future.

Did they ever officially reveal what Avatar's total budget was, advertising included? I remember hearing some insane number like $600 million way back when.

That also doesn't include developmental costs over a decade long period from fox before the green light .

STAR WARS: The Force Awakens will drop over 800 theatre this weekend. Making it virtually impossible to catch Titanic. TFA actually had a per theatre average that was stellar these past few weeks. However, it looks like there is just to many films right now for it to stay in the theatre much longer on a large scale.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 29, 2016, Original Post Date: Jan 29, 2016 ---
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will take and estimated 2.7 million at the Box office on Friday 1/29/2016

my guess is we are looking at a 7.5 - 9 million dollar weekend.

Not bad with all the films that are out.

With the number of theaters showing the film decreasing by more than 800 and this being its week 7, Star Wars: TFA being number 3 at the box office is impressive, most impressive. Just a little less than 17 million to $2 billion dollars. Let's go!
