It's a bastardization of a Japanese phrase referring to... anime titillation. Generally speaking, Western usage of the term means that they're doing something for the sole purpose of pandering to fans.

    Got a source on that?

Box Office Mojo's current prediction for this week (as far as the United States goes):
    • Monday: $40.1 M / $288.1 M
    • Tuesday: $39.4 M (1.83% drop) / $327.5 M
    • Wednesday: $40.3 M (2.23% increase) / $367.7 M
    • Thursday: $27.3 M (32.19% drop) / $395. M
    • Friday: $56.5 M (107.11% increase) / $451.5 M
    • Saturday: $69.2 M (22.43% increase) / $520.7 M
    • Sunday: $59.4 M (14.24% drop) / $580.1 M
So that's $902 million in the bag, counting the current international total and not yet counting what the movie will make internationally this week.

Box office mojo has it having earned $37.3 million yesterday. Just a bit short of their prediction but a sith ton of money, nonetheless.

At the foreign box office. So slightly more than it made here in the same timeframe. Sounds about right.
It's usually balanced out by overperforming on weekends or whatever.

In my opinion it was at best only a mediocre movie; the plot was simple and rather predictable (about a soldier (knight) who meets a princess and ends up saving her people and marrying her). Never understood why it become such a box office hit. Granted, the CGI/3D was quite well done, but otherwise there are loads of better scifi/fantasy movies.

    So, yes, good riddance Avatar.

Avatar the movie was not that good but the 3D was cutting edge technology at the time. That is why it did so many people flocked out to see it. It was a spectacle. I only went to see it because everyone was raving how great the 3D was and I suspect there were many more just like me. I hope TFA takes down its box office record.

It's great considering that huge dip was expected with everyone sharing time with their families. Today, on the other hand, we will get another explosions.
