There has been a lot of talk about "The saber in space" spewing onto multiple threads. Though speculation about Luke's blue saber from ESB has been around since the teaser came out, MSW has directly stated that they believe the film will start with a saber in space. Let's speculate here about whether or not this saber will indeed be the opening scene of TFA , what it's role is in the film and the saber's possible origin.

    But the lightsaber is....dead? :)

    Seriously, good thread idea!

The role of the lightsaber is symbolical .

It was what bridged the PT and the OT together, it'll bridge the OT and the ST.

A master looses it and give it to his padawan, the excalibur of the Star Wars Saga.

It must be the blue one, Anakin's last Jedi saber, and it will end up in Rey's hand at the end of the Episode.

I'm extremely interested to see how they explain how any of the lost saber's from the OT would end up floating their way into the story or do they not really elaborate. Vader's saber still makes more sense to me as to why Kylo would want it but I can see what you mean about the Anakin/Luke saber. It would span all 3 trilogies.

Well 2 things we learned so far:

From Attack of the Clones, a Lightsaber can easily be broken (In the droid factory).
Vader's last saber probably was still onboard the Death Star when it exploded.

Luke's blue saber probably fell somewhere inside Cloud City, not necesseraly in a vent. Maybe it was picked up by a Cloud City visitor (they were having a blast in Cloud City after the victory)

Maybe someone found Luke's hand and saber and kept it as a souvenir.

This bit of the EU story of what happened wasn't bad obviously no longer canon now but still wouldn't be a bad explanation of what happened. I think it's funny that IF that object falling down when Luke falls out of the vent was supposed to be the hand and saber Lucas let the film and EU contradict each other. That doesn't matter now but that's just another reason I don't think that was it falling and why if it was intended to be it was a bad idea.

"The lightsaber, still clutched by Luke Skywalker's hand, had become lodged in one of Cloud City's lower air shafts and eventually was recovered by a maintenance drone. The drone deposited the hand and the lightsaber in Smelting Core D. There, it was discovered by Groggin, the Smelting Core's supervisor."

Would be funny if the hand was then put in carbonite.

    TFA's ending:

Rey brings the saber and the hand to Luke.

    - here, it thing it belongs to you
    - Oh gee, thanks Rey! Keep the saber, and I'll get my hand reattached.

    Anti-Luke-as-a-cyborg theory.

The last time we see Anakin's saber in Empire we get no impression that there is anything below Luke but the planet itself. However if they are intent on using the lightsaber they would have to have some kind of explanation like above. Somehow it gets lodged somewhere and someone finds it. How it gets back to Tatooine and why everyone wants it is beyond me. Someone could carry it and perhaps that ship is destroyed in a space battle outside tatooine and the saber falls to the surface. Why it doesn't burn up, I don't know? The whole thing is a bit farfetched and seems to be not worth the effort. However someone finding it and bringing it somewhere is light years better than the damn thing floating in space for 30 years and landing on Tatooine a journey that would likely take a million years, not thirty.

I would rather someone just find it under some sand or in a junk pile at a scrap yard type place personally. I'm hoping the first trailer either kills off or gives life to the saber in space thing so we know for sure or even just lets us see what it looks like.

What if the first shot is a tight close-up of the floating saber, and then it pans out to a massive space battle above Rey's desert planet wherein starfighters are blasting a disintegrating star destroyer with debris ejecting from the wreck? The saber is just another piece of space-junk. That would put Poe, Kylo, Rey in the same place, and tie (no pun intended) a lot of the rumors together (e.g. the monster ship the Falcon gets sucked into is huge, vulture-like scavenger vessel).

Maybe it starts with an already intense space battle and someone throws the saber in an escape pod and "floating in space" is just being misinterpreted or the description wasn't detailed enough to say it is in space but it's inside something else in space that comes crashing down to the planet.

The saber in space and floating probably really means...it is on a ship.

Falls to the ground means...the ship crashes and the saber lands somewhere.

If a hand is involved it was orobably clutching it whomever was piloting the ship like...Kylo

If after the crawl I see a hand floating in space clutching a light saber, I will feel insulted. If, as a viewer, I'm expected to buy into the fact that somehow that is a logical occurance, all bets are off. I should then have no problem accepting that jar jar is uber and lando contracted Benjamin button disease and IS Finn. And glee son is the love child of obiwan and padme, conceived and borne unbeknownst to anakin who went to that plantet that one time for two weeks. Sly is Fett...all of it

    No, man...just no...

So if you want us to "speculate" why did you mark the thread for "spoiler" clicks maybe.

But we are speculating not spoiling. By that token every article should be marked as spoiler.

The Lightsaber falling from space thing is considered a spoiler. Some people who are not reading all the rumors and leaks may not know about it.

Referencing the plot details MSW has released through material supposedly giving away plot details of the movie are spoilers. We are talking about the saber in space not arguing about how to tag a thread thanks.
